Abstract: A fluid mover includes a hollow body with a straight-through passage of substantially constant cross-section with an inlet end an outlet end for the entry and discharge respectively of a working fluid. A nozzle substantially circumscribes and opens into the passage intermediate the inlet and outlet ends. An inlet communicates with the nozzle for the introduction of a transport fluid, and a mixing chamber is formed within the passage downstream of the nozzle. The nozzle internal geometry and the bore profile upstream of the nozzle exit optimise the energy transfer between the transport fluid and working fluid. Working fluids are atomised to form a dispersed vapour/droplet flow with locally supersonic conditions within a pseudo-vena contracta, resulting in the creation of a supersonic condensation shock wave within the downstream mixing chamber by the condensation of the transport fluid. Thus when the outer end is tilted to the opening, the inner end is in the interior of the container. An ozone generator is provided in the chamber. A plurality of openings in the wall of the housing at the inner end conduct ozone from the chamber out into the interior of the container.

Abstract: A method for inactivating a fluid culture includes inserting a collapsible bag within a chamber of a tank assembly. A fluid is dispensed into a compartment of the collapsible bag, the fluid including a culture containing live cells or microorganisms. A lid is positioned over an opening of the tank assembly so that the collapsible bag is substantially enclosed within the tank assembly. The fluid within the collapsible bag is heated to an inactivation temperature that is sufficiently high to kill all of the live cells or microorganisms within the fluid. In one embodiment, the fluid within the flexible bag is mixed while the fluid is being heated to the inactivation temperature.

Abstract: A paracorporeal respiratory assist lung is configured with an annular cylindrical hollow fiber membrane (fiber bundle) that is rotated at rapidly varying speeds. Fluid (for example, blood) is introduced to the center of the device and is passed radially through the fiber bundle. The bundle is rotated at rapidly changing velocities with a rotational actuator (for example, a motor or magnetic coupling). The rotation of the fiber bundle provides centrifugal kinetic energy to the fluid giving the device pumping capabilities and may create Taylor vortexes to increase mass transfer. Rotation of the fiber bundle increases the relative velocity between the fluid and the hollow fibers and increases the mass transfer. The porosity of the fiber bundle may be varied to enhance gas exchange with the blood. Alternatively, a rotating core may be used with a stationary fiber bundle.
