Abstract: Described are sample carriers and methods of extracting a fluid sample from a dried sample on a sample carrier. The sample carrier has a first carrier portion that receives a fluid sample, and includes a material that adsorbs the fluid sample and dissolves upon application of a solvent. A second carrier portion is attached to the first carrier portion and includes a material that is indissolvable in the solvent. The first carrier portion having a dried sample is dissolved into a solution upon application of the solvent. The solution can be analyzed to determine constituents in the extracted sample. The sample carrier can conveniently be in the form of a card or a dipstick. In alternative embodiments, a carrier portion that includes the dried sample is indissolvable in the solvent but is released from another carrier portion through application of a solvent to an intervening dissolvable carrier portion.

Abstract: A method for recovering ruthenium from a spent ruthenium-based catalyst carried on aluminum oxide includes: drying, calcining, and cooling a spent catalyst; grinding the spent catalyst into black powder; placing the black powder in a fluidized bed reactor, purging the reactor with hydrogen and heating the black powder to obtain ruthenium metal, then heating the black powder in a mixed atmosphere of oxygen and ozone to obtain RuO4 gas; absorbing the RuO4 gas with a sufficient amount of hydrochloric acid to obtain a H3RuCl6 solution; adding an excess oxidant to the H3RuCl6 solution to oxidize the H3RuCl6 into H2RuCl6; adding excess NH4Cl to the H2RuCl6 and then filtering, and washing the filter cake to obtain solid (NH4)2RuCl6; and reducing the solid (NH4)2RuCl6 by hydrogen to obtain ruthenium metal.

Abstract: A head of an open ended ratchet features outer face plates with voids that delimit a jaw space that is open at one end. Two gripping pieces face toward one another from opposing sides of the jaw space. A working side of each gripping piece features two working faces that lie at an oblique angle to one another to define an inner corner that fits over a respective outer corner of a fastener. The gripping pieces are displaceable along the plates into working positions reaching further into the jaw space. A force member is slidable along the plates to force the gripping pieces into the working position, in which the working faces frictionally engage peripheral faces of the fastener. A handle coupled to the head is pivotally movable in opposing directions to push and release the force member, thereby controlling engagement and release of the gripping pieces with the fastener.

Abstract: Flanges become stuck upon large pipes. This invention is a flange tightening tool in combination with a wrench, or other handled tool, having a fixed jaw integral with a handle and a movable jaw. The invention provides pins connected to each of the fixed jaw and the movable jaw. The pins extend mutually parallel and from the same side of both jaws. The pins generally have a round cylindrical shape with a diameter compatible to a flange aperture. The pins have a connection to the wrench utilizing a threaded tip that engages a cooperating threaded hole in each jaw. The pins are provided in various diameters, often in kit form. One pin may be longer than the other pins and both pins have left hand threading.

Abstract: Disclosed are an apparatus and related methods for quickly deactivating or otherwise plugging a sprinkler, wherein the deactivated sprinkler may automatically reactivate in view of an unexpected fire. Generally, the disclosed apparatus comprises: a forked clamping arm and a jaw arm with a stopper plug, wherein the forked clamping arm is positioned around a body of a fire-sprinkler and the plug is squeezed against an outlet of a fire-sprinkler via locking plier action between the clamping arm member and the jaw arm member. Suitably, a water tight seal is created by the plug over the outlet. Preferably, the plug of the apparatus may be configured to melt whenever ambient temperatures surrounding the sprinkler reach a threshold level so that the sprinkler may reactivate in view of an unexpected fire in its proximity.

Abstract: A top surface of a transmitter on a torque wrench is opposed to a position camera, and bolt holes to fix the transmitter to a wrench main body open on the top surface. The bolt holes are formed to four places so as to define a rectangle and extend in a thickness direction of the transmitter. The marker is attached to the top surface of a head of one of the bolts, which extends through a through bolt hole. When the transmitter is fixed to the main body using a bolt, the depth of a large diameter portion of the through bolt hole is larger than the total thickness of the bolt head portion and the marker. Therefore, the marker is disposed lower than an aperture surface of the bolt hole and the possibility of the marker being damaged during work is reduced.
