  • Patent number: 4644861
Abstract: An improved system and method for increasing the operational efficiency of screw-type presses which express or compress fluids from fibrous material. These improvements generally include improved means for compressing the fibrous material at its interface with both the hollow main shaft and the cylindrical outer housing of the press. Improved split worms having improved attaching means for each worm flight to the main shaft and collar therearound also contribute to improved efficiency. Further included is an improved means for draining the expressed fluids from the compression chamber radially inward into the hollow main shaft and radially outwardly through the outer housing wall of the compression chamber. In addition to improved radially outward drainage, improved wedge-shaped screen bars in the cylindrical outer housing walls eliminate the need for breaker bars which are otherwise necessary to reduce the spiraling effect of this fibrous material during compression.

  • Patent number: 4530761
Abstract: An extrusion device used for extracting liquids from liquid-solid mixtures and which operates on the separation gap principle, comprising a screw rotating in a barrel. Pins project radially inwardly into the barrel. The separation gaps and the internal lining of the barrel are maintained in an operationally efficient state for long periods of time even if highly abrasive and/or corrosive mixtures are being treated. The internal surface of the hollow barrel is lined with individual, interchangeable segments which are peripherally staggered relative to one another in the form of a wall, end face or tip portions are located on the end portion of the pins. Moreover, the screw comprises a mandrel on which are mounted individual screw flight portions. Between the flight portions, ring portions are mounted on the mandrel. These ring portions and the tip portions mounted on the pins define the separation gaps. Accordingly, those parts which are liable to wear or corrode can be readily replaced.

  • Patent number: 4397230
Abstract: A predrainer type screw press for dewatering highly liquid materials having a feed and pressing screw in which the body of a portion of the feed section of the press is cylindrical and the body of a portion in the pressing section of the press is frusto conical having its small diameter end contiguous with the cylindrical body and of a smaller diameter. The feed portion of the screw is partially surrounded by a bar screen for permitting draining of free run liquids from a material to be dewatered. A pressure assisted overflow in the input hopper is provided to limit the material head in the hopper to prevent slippage and ensure positive feed. Baffles are provided to absorb energy from input material having a high velocity to prevent sticking of material to the screw. Pressing section filter screens are hinged to open out for easy access for cleaning and have a liquid tight seal at the ends when closed.

  • Patent number: 4397231
Abstract: An apparatus for producing and collecting a liquid extract and a pressed dry by-product from a mash of fibrous material includes an extraction chamber and a mechanism for compressing the mash of fibrous material within the extraction chamber to extract the liquid and form a pressed dry product therefrom. The extraction chamber includes a material inlet opening for filling the chamber with the mash, a liquid outlet opening for collecting the liquid extract, and a by-product outlet opening for collecting the dry by-product. The compressing mechanism expells the dry by-product from the extraction chamber once the liquid has been extracted from the mash. The mash is compressed within a movable work station, and the dry by-product is expelled from the extraction chamber by moving the work station and discharging the dry product in accordance therewith.

  • Patent number: 4380496
Abstract: A process and an apparatus for mechanically dewatering municipal sewage sludge or peat. The undewatered feed material is passed into the first end of a cylindrical porous wall and pressurized within the cylindrical wall by a rotating screw conveyor, which also transports the solids toward the second end of the cylindrical wall. The screw conveyor comprises a central shaft which has at least two built-up sections of gradually increasing diameter providing a compression ratio of 2.5:1.0. The flight depth of the screw conveyor increases by a factor greater than 2.0 after each built-up section. The distance between the edge of the screw conveyor blade and the inner surface of the cylindrical wall and the structure of the openings in the wall have specific dimensional limitations. Fibrous additives may be used to aid in dewatering peat and secondary sludges.

  • Patent number: 4347134
Abstract: A slurry separator utilizes the power inherent in the pressurized slurry from the slurry pump through a reaction nozzle to drive a rotor, with the slurry distributed through the nozzle being distributed over the surface of a conical grid. The rotor structure also drives squeegee-like blades which scrape the solids downward inside the cone readying screen for the next discharge, and then sweeping them down into a cylindrical auger chamber where they are compacted downwardly against an inverted conical floor to further squeeze moisture through the sides of a housing cylinder. The conical floor of the compacting cylinder presses up against the particulates to be compacted with a resistance that is proportional to the speed of the rotor, achieved through the use of a centrifugal governor. This action makes it tolerant to variations in nozzle flow volume (pressure) and converts energy output into optimum separation.
