Patent number: 6349642Abstract: In a conventional sheet-fed printing machine having a central drive, the dynamic positional deviation with respect to a setpoint value continually increases from printing unit to printing unit due to the elasticity (a vibratory multi-mass system). Thus, the precision is dependent on the number of printing units. A mechanical interconnection of the individual cylinders of the sheet-fed printing machine is partially removed and replaced by individual drives is, therefore, provided. In the multiple motor open-loop drive control described, the fault does not increase because in each printing unit, the torque is supplied separately, and all drives are closed-loop controlled using the same reference variable.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2000Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventors: Jürgen Olomski, Hans-Peter Tröndle, Ralf Viefhaus

The printing group cylinders are positioned and maintained via the disclosed arrangement in such a way that adjacent cylinder bodies have an approximately parallel orientation.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1997Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Assignee: MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AGInventors: Godber Petersen, Josef Gottling, Bernhard Feller, Hans Fleischmann

Patent number: 5937748Abstract: A metal coil printing mechanism for providing alignment between two patterns to be printed on a surface of the coil includes a blanket cylinder for applying a pattern to the metal coil and first and second plate cylinders which apply first and second patterns to the blanket cylinder. The first plate cylinder is geared directly to the blanket cylinder for rotation therewith. The second plate cylinder is geared for rotation with the blanket cylinder through a phase shifting device. The phase shifting device can be adjusted such that the circumferential position of the second pattern relative to the first pattern is adjusted such that desired alignment of the two patterns can be obtained.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1998Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: Sequa CorporationInventors: David Leligdon, John Gregory Byrne, Frank Schertler

Patent number: 5924362Abstract: A drive system for a sheet-fed offset printing press in which one or more cylinders are motor-driven in accordance with a prescribed desired position. According to the invention, a correction device receives measured angular position values of the cylinder from a rotational position sensor. The correction device then converts the measured position values into modified position values which are then sent to the drive controller. The drive controller compares the modified position values with desired cylinder position values and controls the motor so as to correct any deviation between the values. The correction device allows modification of the measured signals as needed to compensate for known or determinable parameters. A drive according to the present invention provides precise driving control, while reducing the required assembly and manufacturing accuracy of components such as the angle position sensor, and while compensating for other errors in drives.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1997Date of Patent: July 20, 1999Assignee: MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AGInventors: Albrecht Volz, Joachim Blumor, Holger Wiese, Klaus-Peter Reichardt

Patent number: 5901647Abstract: Various components in a rotary printing press are driven by suitable electric motors. Each component and its associated drive motor is provided with an angle position sensor. A tolerance range for the rotary angular position of each electric motor is selected. If the actual instantaneous angular position of the motor or component falls outside of the tolerance range, the rotary printing press is stopped.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1997Date of Patent: May 11, 1999Assignee: Koenig & Bauer-Albert AktiengesellschaftInventor: Michael Kohlmann

Patent number: RE36552Abstract: A printing method and apparatus for printing different indicia, such as account numbers, on selected documents without changing plates or stopping the press during a press run. Different indicia are provided at two or more lines on a printing plate, each line being separated from an adjacent line on the plate by a predetermined distance relative to movement of the plate in a press. The plate transfers images to a blanket having a region that does not contact the plate and thus receives no image of the plate area that registers with the noncontacting region of the blanket. The plate and blanket initially are aligned so that the noncontacting region registers with one set of indicia on the plate, so that the blanket receives a partial inked image lacking that indicia. That partial inked image is transferred to sheets passing through the press.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1998Date of Patent: February 8, 2000Assignee: John H. Harland CompanyInventors: Randall W.
