Patent number: 5090323Abstract: A containment bag has two sections. A forward section with one end secured positively in the sabot-obturator interface region during the assembly of the sabot, obturator, projectile and casing adapter. The other end of the forward section has a circumferential securing band, for example a band of loops of the type marketed under the trademark Velcro. An aft bag section is secured to the cartridge casing at one end in a conventional manner and the other end has a circumferential securing band; Velcro hooks for example. The bands join the two sections of the bag together when the cartridge casing is brought into position to be bonded to the cartridge adapter.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1990Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Assignee: 501 Alliant Techsytems Inc.Inventors: John A. Patent number: 5063848Abstract: An igniter bag for a cannon cartridge is disclosed which comprises a generally toroidal annular bag of combustible fabric such as cotton or rayon containing an ignition powder. The bag has a plurality of radial seams separating the bag and the powder contained therein into separate adjacent compartments within the bag so that movement of the powder within the bag is substantially restricted. This construction prevents side to side shifting of the ignition powder during storage, handling and loading of the cartridge.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1990Date of Patent: November 12, 1991Assignee: Olin CorporationInventors: Mark A. Patent number: 5054399Abstract: An ordnance or munition casing is described which comprises a hollow outer casing having a shock attenuating inner liner made from successive layers of material of inwardly decreasing acoustic impedance. The inner liner reduces the sensitivity of the munition to sympathetic detonation and cookoff. Also described is an attenuation barrier made from a layer or layers of less detonation sensitive explosive material. The layers of less detonation sensitive material are preferably arranged in successive layers of outwardly decreasing detonation sensitivity. The same layers may combine sequenced acoustic impedance and detonation sensitivity. The layers may be made of material compounded with flaked or granular materials to provide preselected acoustic impedances. A coating for desensitizing the outer surface layer of a main explosive charge is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1990Date of Patent: October 8, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Andrew G. Patent number: 4949640Abstract: The invention relates to a propellant charge container for receiving loose propellant charge powders. The propellant charge container consists of at least two separate telescopically mounted cylindrical parts which are mutually rotatable relative to each in the peripheral direction. The propellant charge container has a substantially cylindrical shape. The cylindrical container parts forming the container are coupled to each via their mutually overlapping regions. Each of the respective overlapping regions of the parts forming the container have at least one opening, which openings can be mutually aligned to form a filling opening. When these openings are misaligned the filling opening is closed. The overlapping regions of the cylindrical parts have one or more annular corrugations which interengage to form a firm coupling between the cylindrical parts forming the propellant charge container.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1985Date of Patent: August 21, 1990Assignee: Rheinmetall GmbHInventor: Karlheinz Reinelt

Patent number: 4864932Abstract: A propellant-charge pack has an annular envelope having an outer wall extending along and centered on an axis, a pair of axially spaced end walls extending transversely inward from the axis and having inner peripheries centered on the axis, and an inner wall defining a clear axially throughgoing passage between the inner peripheries of the end walls. The envelope is generally axially symmetrical about the axis, that is it is formed as a body of revolution or of regular polygonal section, and is substantially symmetrical to a plane perpendicular to the axis midway between the end walls. A relatively easily ignited primar charge forms a part of the inner wall symmetrical of the plane and a propellant charge fills the envelope between the walls outward of the inner wall. The primar charge is of such high combustibility, compared to the diameter of the passage, that the entire primar charge, even of a stack of such packs, will be ignited before they burn through and set off the respective propellant charges.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1987Date of Patent: September 12, 1989Inventors: Kalrheinz Reinelt, Michael Schwenzer
