Patent number: 8319660Abstract: A system on a railroad hopper car for providing an indication, observable by a person located either proximate to or remote from the hopper car, of a condition of a lock arranged in operable combination with a mechanism on the hopper car for controlling discharge of material from the hopper car. The system includes electric circuitry and a sensor for providing a signal when each discharge mechanism lock on the railcar is in the locked condition and for producing another signal when each discharge mechanism lock on the railcar is in the unlocked condition. An illuminable indicator, mountable on a side of the railroad hopper car, is responsive to signals from the circuitry for displaying the condition of the discharge mechanism locks. A method for visually displaying a condition of a lock on a railroad hopper car as through use of illumination is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2009Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Miner Enterprises, Inc.Inventor: Christopher C. Patent number: 5237934Abstract: The present invention is a control device that allows an operator to partially open a gate valve found at the bottom of a railway freight car hopper in order to obtain a sample of a flowable particulate or granular product contained within the hopper but preventing the gate valve from fully opening so as to partially unload the hopper. The device is provided with a rotatable operating shaft having attaching to it a structure for opening and closing the gate valve in response to rotation of the operating shaft. The operating shaft is provided with two ends that extend through end panels of the hopper. One of the two ends is provided with a lockable sample control handle and the second of the two ends is provided with an angled slot by which a lockable control handle movably attaches. The angled slot allows the operating shaft to be rotated when the control handle is locked closed by unlocking and turning the sample control handle.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1993Date of Patent: August 24, 1993Assignee: Touchstone, Inc.Inventor: Wayne A. Patent number: 4964348Abstract: A pivoted drop end for a railway car which is adapted to be manipulated (lifted) by power equipment in the car to open or close the car end. The car end includes lower side posts, each having a cam follower running in a cam on the car frame which swings the car end about a pivot carried on each of the posts. The pivots are guided in a vertical slot and cooperates with the cam. The car end is opened outwardly of the car and rests in open horizontal position on a pedestal support of the frame so that adjacent open car ends form a bridge to move loads longitudinally of the train. The car end is dampened in lowering (opening) movement by dash-pots connected between the car end and car frame. A side dumping railway car tilts the car body to either side by sets of pneumatic cylinders, each set being alternatively under control of a valve.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1989Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Assignee: Differential Steel Car CompanyInventors: Richard W. Patent number: 4843974Abstract: A railroad hopper car having bottom discharge doors, an elongated beam assembly along the bottom of the car, door operating levers to open and close the doors connected to the beam assembly and doors, and lost motion timing connections in the beam assembly which permits displacement of beam sections to open and close pairs or sets of doors in a sequential but substantially simultaneous and automatic order so ast to permit reduction of air pressure required to open the doors, or permit use of smaller diameter air cylinder, a pneumatic drive to move the beam in opposite directions to open and close the doors, and a secondary lock to maintain the beam stationary unless pneumatic pressure intentionally operates the pneumatic drive, with the lock being positioned to be readily seen when locked and safely operated if necessary from the wayside.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1988Date of Patent: July 4, 1989Assignee: Thrall Car Manufacturing CompanyInventors: John A. Patent number: 4688488Abstract: Apparatus for actuating and locking the hopper doors of a hopper car of the type having a center sill of inverted U-shaped cross section and a plurality of hopper doors extending transversely of the center sill. The hopper doors can be arranged singly to close a chute, in opposed cooperating pairs, and both. The actuating and locking apparatus of the present invention comprises a shaft extending transversely of the center sill and located between adjacent pairs of hopper doors when the hopper doors are so arranged and adjacent each single hopper door when present. Each such shaft is rotatively mounted. A lever is mounted on each shaft. Each lever has an arm for each door to which it is adjacent and a link pivotally connected to each such arm and the adjacent hopper door. Each lever also has an upright arm extending into the center sill and pivotally affixed to a segmented actuating beam located within the center sill and extending longitudinally therein.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1985Date of Patent: August 25, 1987Assignee: Avondale Industries, Inc.Inventors: Norman S. Patent number: 4163424Abstract: Both an operating link and a locking hook member are secured on a shaft rotatably mounted on a hopper door. The hook member cooperates with a locking lug fixed relative to the hopper for securing the door closed. The operating link is both pivoted and pushed or pulled by a crank actuated by retainable handles for operating the hook member and opening and closing the door.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 1977Date of Patent: August 7, 1979Assignee: Pullman Inc.Inventor: Thomas Lindauer

Patent number: 3958514Abstract: A gravity outlet suitable for hoppers is provided comprising a gate movable back and forth between open and closed positions. A locking shaft is mounted on the gate having handles on at least one side of the outlet and having a locking member preferably hook shaped mounted thereon. A locking lug and a tripping lug are affixed to the pans or frame structure of the outlet. In order to open the gate the locking shaft is rotated to move the locking member to a position out of engagement with the locking lug thus allowing the gate to move outwardly from the pans. As the gate travels towards the open position, the tripping lug trips the locking member into a tripped position where it rides to the open position with the gate. Stops are provided to stop the gate in the full open position. During closing of the gate, a cam surface on the locking member travels up the locking lug and then the locking member drops into the locked position automatically to maintain the gate in a closed and locked position.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1974Date of Patent: May 25, 1976Assignee: ACF Industries, IncorporatedInventors: Roger L.
