One or more other steps, including pre-coating, post-coating and partial removal of the reflective or refractive layer, may also be carried out as part of the continuous process within the vacuum chamber.

    Abstract: Adhesive is applied to a web by way of a printing plate and reverse enclosed doctor blade so as to apply the adhesive in selected locations thereby minimizing the amount of adhesive applied in order to decrease the stiffness of the resultant multi-ply web. The amount of adhesive build up on the embossing rolls due to the adhesive bleeding through the web material is minimized and the embossing rolls are permitted to clean themselves in that the adhesive application is carried out so that adhesive is not applied to the web material adjacent portions of the embossing roll on successive rotations of the roll. By doing so, portions of the backup roll which support the web where adhesive was previously applied are permitted to selfclean by allowing the adhesive which has bled through the web and collected on the backup roll to dry and flake off prior to adhesive again being applied to the web adjacent such region.

The surface to be coated is moved continuously past and in contact with the roll surface to apply a uniform coating of lacquer to that surface. For the component-inserting machine, the component-reversing machine, and the component-discharging machine, pressure pins are used to insert or move the component chips. These pressure pins have at the tip part a taper portion with a tip shape smaller than that of the component holding hole. Since the pressure pins of this type are used, the tip portions of these pressure pins may be prevented from impinging upon the opening edges of the component holding holes, and the pressure pins after the impingement may be hindered from forcibly being inserted into the component holding holes, whereby damage to the interiors of the component holding holes can be extremely diminished.

The longitudinal edges of the plate are mounted to the cylindrical body using a clamping mechanism which permits easy installation and removal. Even with relatively light pressure, the photopolymer plate releases a substantial portion of the coating material when the plate is applied to a workpiece. Consequently, the composition and secondary rollers may be spaced apart by a gap slightly smaller than the thickness of the workpiece. Because of this gap, coating material does not tend to be applied from the plate cylinder to the secondary roller, thus reducing the safety and environmental problems associated with cleaning the secondary roller.

    Abstract: A magnetizable layer can be applied to a flexible backing web by gravure coating at high speeds by independently driving the backing web at a speed that is substantially different from the surface speed of the gravure roll. Especially high coating speeds have been achieved when the gravure roll rotates oppositely to the direction in which the backing web is advancing. In one embodiment, a nip roll presses the backing web against the backup roll, there is a gap between the gravure roll and a backup roll, and an idler roll is positioned downstream of the gap to force the backing web into contact with the gravure roll over a short arc. When that backup roll has a hard surface such as metal, its surface can be machined with precision, and that precision can be maintained in spite of exposure to solvent vapors.

A stereoscopic image is printed upon a plastic or paper sheet, which is fed directly onto a surface having an inverse lenticular pattern relief. During this process, the sheet carrying the stereoscopic image is bonded to the back surface of the polymer lenticular layer in precise registration with the lenticular array. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the inverse lenticular pattern relief is on the outer surface of a transparent cylinder. The polymer layer is cured as it is flowed onto the relief pattern by an ultraviolet lamp placed within the transparent cylinder.

A portion of the peripheral edge of each glue-applying wheel is recessed radially inwardly, to define an interruption in an outer diameter of the peripheral edge, so that only a non-recessed portion of the outer edge transfers glue to the closure stamps. In this way, opposite ends of the glue lines are spaced from leading and trailing edges of the closure stamp. A synchronizing mechanism is provided to achieve a proper synchronization between the stamp-feeding mechanism and the glue-applying wheels to ensure that the glue lines are kept spaced from the leading and trailing ends of the closure stamp.
