  • Patent number: 4226207
Abstract: In an apparatus for coating cylindrical graphite bodies, a pair of shafts are arranged in a closely spaced apart relationship with their respective axes lying close to the horizontal in respective parallel planes and slightly tilted in opposite directions in those planes, so that the shafts cross one another with none of their surfaces being parallel and form between them a guideway for a graphite body to be coated, the rotation of the shafts in the same sense causing the body to advance to a coating station arranged alongside the shafts and electrodes positioned above the guideway to form a coating-bonding electric arc with the body, which is supplied current through the shafts. The rotation of the shafts is reversible for advancing the graphite body back and forth past the coating station for the application of multilayered coatings.

  • Patent number: 4099481
Abstract: The apparatus of the invention employs a gas torch which has the feature of selective addition of metal powder to the gas flow. In use, the torch is caused to make a continuous succession of traverses of a workpiece region for preheating purposes and then, without interrupting the continuous operation of either the torch or the traversing cycles, a controlled flow of metal powder is caused to enter the torch flow, enabling the bonding and progressive building of a metal coat to desired thickness. In the embodiments described, first and second different metal powders are thus successively coated to the substrate without interrupting the continuous operation. Different embodiments are described in the particular context of applying uniform circumferential coatings to a cylindrical workpiece such as a shaft.

  • Patent number: 4071389
Abstract: Resin is sprayed onto a mandrel by traversing a nozzle axially of the mandrel, reinforcement is applied on the resin layer and continuous filament is wound on the reinforcement and resin. To control the amount of resin sprayed onto particular locations of the mandrel, auxiliary means move the nozzle relative to the mandrel in addition to the axial-traversing movement, such as by moving the nozzle toward and away from the mandrel or by turning the nozzle. Such turning can be about an upright axis to displace the depositing location of the resin spray axially of the mandrel, or about an axis generally parallel to the path along which resin is ejected from the nozzle in a flat fan-shaped spray to change the plane of the spray from a position generally parallel to the axis of the mandrel into a position at a substantial angle to the axis of the mandrel.
