Patent number: 5572948Abstract: A feeder specifically designed for feeding ratite birds from age two weeks to adulthood. The feeder has a cup providing the equivalent of a feeding trough. The cup has a perforated floor. This enables dust and fine particles which form when dry feed disintegrates over time to be separated from the remaining pellets. This is important, since ratite birds will refuse food excessively contaminated by this dust. The cup further prevents food pellets from being scattered during vigorous pecking while birds are feeding. The feeder includes a covered hopper for storing food. A sliding gate controls an opening leading to the cup. In another embodiment, the cup is adjustably mounted to the hopper below the feed opening. The cup is moved to cover and uncover the opening, thereby regulating the rate of discharge of feed into the cup. The hopper cover is frictionally closely fit to the hopper, thereby providing protection from rain. A removable rain hood further protects dispensed feed.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1994Date of Patent: November 12, 1996Inventor: George E. Womack

Patent number: 5069164Abstract: An animal feeder having a rotatable feed plate. A spacer is carried by the feed plate to limit the amount of feed carried by the plate and further prevents accumulation of feed on the central portion feed plate. Limiting the amount of feed on the plate reduces the weight of feed to allow rotation of the plate by a smaller feeding animal. The spacer of this invention further reduces feed spoilage caused by static feed typically collected on the feed plate central portion. The feed plate is spaced from the feed trough by a central raised portion of the base to isolate feed carried on the plate from that in the trough. Isolating feed on the feed plate in this manner prevents the wicking of moisture from the trough into the hopper.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1990Date of Patent: December 3, 1991Assignee: Universal Cooperatives, Inc.Inventor: Mark A. Patent number: 4554888Abstract: A compact animal feeder having a tubular housing with paired feed access openings spaced side-by-side in the sidewall. The feed access openings are located upwardly on the sidewall so that a rounded bottom portion of the tubular sidewall forms a trough which tends to hold feed centrally in a chamber formed within the housing. A feed delivery tube enters from above through another opening in the housing and extends downwardly between each pair of feed access openings to a point above the rounded trough bottom. An adjustable gap permits a given amount of feed to pile up below the feed supply tube. The feed pile automatically stops further flow. Multiple animal feeding is possible from a location at the side of a pen. Oppositely paired feed access openings can be used to permit installation between pens.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1984Date of Patent: November 26, 1985Inventor: Tony H. Gross
