Patent number: 4458709Abstract: To measure the flow rate of a fluid in a pipe, a heat pulse is injected into the fluid by a heat pulse generator, and the time of flight of the pulse between the generator and a sensor is measured. Arrival of the pulse at the sensor is determined by detecting a selected temperature level of the ascending flank of the pulse, and a predetermined temperature level of the descending flank is then detected to initiate generation of the next subsequent pulse. Since the temperature of the descending flank generally represents the temperature of the fluid between the heat pulse generator and sensor, the technique ensures that the accuracy of each successive flow rate measurement is not affected by residual heat from the preceding measurement, and yet enables measurements to be obtained at maximum frequencies. In one embodiment the measurements are used to control the flow rate of the measured fluid, and in another the flow rate of fluid in one or more additional pipes.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1980Date of Patent: July 10, 1984Assignee: Binks Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Carl M. Patent number: 4368751Abstract: This invention provides a valve by means of which a major portion of the suction flow of a swimming pool filtration system is channeled through an automatic cleaning device which cleans the floor and/or wall of a swimming pool, and a minor portion of the suction flow is drawn from the surface of the pool thereby to skim the surface. The valve has a main inlet opening connectable to the device, an outlet opening connectable to the filtration system and an auxiliary opening which is closed to some extent by a closure member to normally provide a restricted aperture through which the water drawn from the surface flows. The closure member is biassed closed by a spring located in a variable volume chamber which communicates with the interior of the valve between the auxiliary opening and the main inlet opening. When the restricted aperture is blocked by leaves or the like, the pressure in the chamber decreases, compressing the spring and allowing the closure member to open.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1981Date of Patent: January 18, 1983Inventor: Fernand L. Patent number: 4161184Abstract: Linear motion fluid-actuated valves in which all elements are in rolling contact. Two major rollers are prevented from moving apart by a retainer belt, a separator roller depressing the belt between the two major rollers to prevent them from moving towards each other; two inner, opposite sides of the rectangularly cross sectioned valve-body holding the separator roller in position with respect to the retainer belt, the other two sides being in contact with the ends of the assembly of movable elements. Admission of fluid into an end of the valve body causes the assembly to move and thus expose a port in the valve body. Accumulators, pressure relief valves and fluid flow control valves are among the useful applications.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1977Date of Patent: July 17, 1979Inventor: Earl W. Traut

Patent number: 4102354Abstract: The improved assembly of the invention includes a novel valve which comprises a housing having a first channel, specifically a single fluid-receiving channel, extending therethrough and a second channel, specifically a valve body-receiving channel, intersecting the first channel to obstruct it or not, depending on the position of a floating, specially contoured valve body in the second channel. The valve body is automatically variably positioned in the second channel in response to relative pressures exerted on its opposite ends. One of its ends is exposed to fluid pressure, such as from a cold water line connected to the first channel, such pressure being passed to such end from the first channel via a small side passageway. The opposite end of the valve body is exposed to fluid pressure passed to it from a remote source, such as a hot water line, as by a pressure conduit. The hot water line does not directly connect with nor cause hot water to pass near or through the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1976Date of Patent: July 25, 1978Inventor: Michele Natale

Patent number: 4085766Abstract: A gas mixing valve including a hollow piston slidably lodged within a sleeve. Openings are formed in the piston wall in adjustable alignment with inlet ports in the sleeve, the longitudinal spacing between the openings being substantially equal to the longitudinal spacing between their respective inlet ports. Longitudinal piston movement causes the inlet ports to be progressively blocked, the ratio between the effective unblocked portions of the ports remaining substantially constant. A pressure responsive means such as a diaphragm controls the longitudinal piston position so as to vary the effective portions of the inlet ports inversely to the pressure within the sleeve and piston. The variance in pressure drops across the inlet ports due to changes in the flow rate of the inflowing gases is thereby limited without altering the mixing ratio.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1976Date of Patent: April 25, 1978Assignee: Bourns, Inc.Inventors: James Weigl, Leo James Lichte

Patent number: 4076171Abstract: An apparatus for opening and closing the draft hood discharge opening and vent and fuel line of a fluid fuel-fired heating device such as a domestic water heater. The disclosed apparatus includes a diaphragm-type expansible chamber fluid motor assembly positioned in the burner fuel supply line. The motor assembly is mechanically linked to a damper assembly such that the supply of pressurized fuel acts to actuate the motor for opening the damper assembly prior to the motor assembly admitting fuel to the burner. Additionally, when the supply of fuel is terminated, the motor assembly does not close the damper assembly until after the motor assembly stops fuel to the burner.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1976Date of Patent: February 28, 1978Inventor: Paul F. Patent number: 4064891Abstract: Apparatus is provided for admixing a relatively small quantity of one fluid with a larger quantity of another fluid in a proportion which remains relatively constant over a wide range of demand flow rates for the mixed fluids. The apparatus comprises a body having an inlet cavity and an outlet chamber in fluid communication therewith through an annular port. A disc-like valving member is mounted for displacement vertically in the chamber into elevations which depend on the rate at which a primary fluid flows through the annular port. A reservoir for a secondary fluid has an upwardly-open orifice and is located interiorly of the annular port. The valving member has a central tapered plug which depends into the reservoir-orifice, and the valving member is weighted so as to be biased downwardly by a constant pressure into a normally-closed position blocking fluid flow through the annular port.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1975Date of Patent: December 27, 1977Assignee: Hale Fire Pump CompanyInventor: H.
