Abstract: Techniques and mechanisms to form a reinforcement structure including dirt processed during drilling of a tunnel. In an embodiment, a device includes a drill head to drill an underground tunnel, where a housing of the device takes in dirt produced by such drilling. A mixer and other components of the device variously condition the dirt to produce a casing material that is subsequently provided to a compactor of the device. The compactor extrudes the casing material through a die. The extruded casing material is eliminated from the device to form a reinforcement structure at one or more sides of the tunnel. In another embodiment, a fiber optic cable is paid out from the device into the tunnel during the drilling, or is pulled into the tunnel by the device during the drilling.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a flexible unbonded pipe comprising an inner liner capable of forming a barrier against outflow of a fluid which is conveyed through the pipe, and one or more armouring layers on the outer side of the inner line. The flexible unbonded pipe comprises at least one polymer layer and one film layer, said polymer layer being bonded to said film layer. The film layer may preferably be a metal film layer, such as aluminum film, stainless steel film or duplex film. The polymer layer may preferably be cross-linked polyethylene. The interfacial bonding between the polymer layer and the film layer should preferably be sufficiently strong to prevent creation of gas pockets between the layers when subjected to an increased pressure of aggressive fluids (hydrogen, sulphides, methane and carbon dioxide) on the film side of the pipe. Thereby, it is possible to protect armour layer(s) from aggressive fluids.

Abstract: A device for cutting reinforced hose to length with limited contamination gaining access to the interior of the hose is disclosed. The device may employ a first rotating blade to circumferentially cut through an outer cover of the hose without penetrating through an interior liner of the hose. The outer cover may be composed of an elastomeric cover reinforced with metallic strands. By preventing the first blade from penetrating the interior liner, the contamination from the kerf created by the blade is not able to access the interior of the hose. After the first blade performs its partial cut around the outer circumference of the hose, the hose may be cleaned and a second blade may be used to cut through the interior liner. The second blade results in very little contamination and thus a cut length of hydraulic hose is created with greatly reduced levels of contamination within the hose without needing a post-cutting cleaning operation.

  • Publication number: 20100037973
Abstract: An efficient flexible hose construction is provided which incorporates resistance, when subjected to high negative pressure loads, to the collapse failure known “rollover” or “shingling”. The construction relates to a means of increasing the torsion capability of a flexible hose where the hose is formed from a helical wire that is coated and thereafter is connected to and supports a shroud or cover. Improved resistance to rollover lies in mechanical enhancements to the interface between the helical wire and the coating material, where the enhancement assists in maintaining the wire and coating as an integral unit and prevents separation leading to shingling under high vacuum pressures. The mechanical enhancement requires use of a specialized cross-section for the helical reinforcing wire.
