Publication number: 20020074063Abstract: The invention is related to a method and an apparatus for dissecting a log into boards, the log being adapted to be displaced on a longitudinal conveyor in a longitudinal direction. For determining the board length, it is prior art to cut the log at its periphery by means of a cross-cut saw prior to dissecting the log into boards. As the cross-cut saw is stationary, the determination of the cutting depth is effected by displacing the log transversally. In the case of larger cutting depths, the log must be displaced back in the transversal direction after effecting the cross-cut so that a board of desired thickness may then subsequently be dissected from the log by means of a band saw. During that back displacement, it may happen that the log slips on the longitudinal conveyor so that the dimensional accuracy is lost.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 2, 2001Publication date: June 20, 2002Inventors: Hans Dietz, Jean Gunnar Bergvall

Patent number: 5503202Abstract: A sawing process and apparatus cuts a log longitudinally along a radius curve to produce boards. The sawing apparatus includes a continuous flexible band saw blade, provided with teeth at one or both edges. A support exposes a section of saw blade that is curved and stabilized by the use of electromagnetic fields in cooperation with rollers. The saw is then configured to make a cut of a desired thickness in a curve parallel the growth rings of a log, in an arc which minimizes the number of knot defects in the board. With each pass of the log through the saw, or vice-versa, a new arc section is cut, and the log or the saw is rotated and positioned for the next arc section cut. Plural sawing stations may be used in series, and the process may be run bi-directionally when using double-edged saw blades. Once the board sections are cut, they are flattened under pressure in a kiln.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1995Date of Patent: April 2, 1996Inventor: William R. Butler

The saw cuts a panel in two steps, first by acting thereon through a portion of its thickness during a horizontal stroke, and then through the remaining portion of its thickness during the reverse stroke, while the direction of rotation of the saw remains unchanged and is such that the teeth thereof act successively on the two faces of the panel and press them inwardly of said panel. The saw is precisely adjustable both horizontally and vertically. Before being positioned for the first cutting step, it is displaced both vertically and horizontally to effect on the side of the panel where the cutting stroke is initiated and terminated one or more incisions compressing the panel material inwardly thereby, avoiding splintering during the subsequent cutting operations.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1986Date of Patent: July 12, 1988Inventors: Gino Benuzzi, deceased, by Piergiorgio Benuzzi, heir-at-law

Patent number: 4653560Abstract: The present invention comprises the combination of an elongated curved linebar with at least one saw. This arrangement enables "sawing-around-the-curve" so that increased recovery can be obtained from cants or logs having significant amounts of sweep. The linebar is positioned so that a tangent at the end adjacent to the saw is parallel to the plane of the saw. The linebar is preferably curved so that it approximates the average curvature of the cants or logs being fed to the saw. An auxilliary straight line bar, which is normally out of contact with an incoming cant, may alternatively be moved into position when the incoming cant is relatively straight sided.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1985Date of Patent: March 31, 1987Assignee: Weyerhaeuser CompanyInventors: Frank Wislocker, Earl D. Patent number: 4633924Abstract: The present invention is a linebar assembly for guiding a cant or log into a saw. It comprises a flexible linebar which can be bent from a straight-line configuration to one approximating a circular arc having a minimum radius of about 30 m. The linebar can be configured into a circular arc which approximates the curvature of a cant or a log having sweep as great as about 100 mm in 5 m of length. The cant is fed into the saw along a circular path to achieve significantly higher lumber recovery. Extended tests have shown that this recovery will be 20-30% greater than that obtained using conventional straight-line sawing methods without any reduction in grade recovery.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1985Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Assignee: Weyerhaeuser CompanyInventors: Earl D. Patent number: 4612966Abstract: During the parallel splitting up of workpiece panels, in particular, consisting of laminated, compressed wood, it is usually not possible to prevent one of the two panel sections resulting after completion of the last separating cut, more particularly, that which was clamped in the feeding device, from warping on account of material tensions, thereby rendering it useless. In order to avoid this, it is proposed that the trimmed edge of the last remaining panel section facing away from the cutting plane be released prior to the final feeding procedure to be carried out, that it be clamped again immediately thereafter, that a further trimming cut be made on the panel section, and that this panel section then be fixed following the final feeding procedure and trimmed anew. In this process, the last resulting panel section is relieved of tension before being finally trimmed along its two longitudinal sides. This ensures that the trimmed edges subsequently produced thereon are exactly parallel to one another.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1985Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Inventor: Detlef Jenkner

Patent number: 4416312Abstract: A cutting machine fitted with saw blades for pieces of timber has, adjacent to at least one pair of outer saw blades, lateral guide devices, the position of which can be adjusted, and which ensure the guiding of a worked piece of timber when its rear end section has left the lateral guide devices before the saw blades on the feed side of the arrangement. The arrangement is suitable for simple sawing machines and for reducing and reducing-sawing machines, and is particularly advantageous for the working of curved timber.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1981Date of Patent: November 22, 1983Assignee: Kockums Industri A.B.Inventor: Sven E.
