    Abstract: Self-supporting bodies are produced by reactive infiltration of a parent metal into a boron nitride material typically resulting in a body comprising a boron-containing compound, a nitrogen-containing compound and metal. The mass to be infiltrated may contain one or more inert fillers admixed with the boron nitride, to produce a composite by reactive infiltration, which composite comprises a matrix which embeds the filler material. The matrix, in a composite body containing filler material, comprises one or more of metal, a boron-containing compound and a nitrogen-containing compound. The relative amounts of reactants and process conditions may by altered or controlled to yield a body containing varying volume percents of ceramic, metal and/or porosity. The mass to be infiltrated can be contained within a refractory vessel having a venting means included therein.

    Abstract: A process for forming a carburized steel article includes carburizing a steel material containing not more than 0.10% silicon and less than 1.1% chromium to form an austenitic surface matrix having a high density of carbides dispersed therein. After quenching, the carburized steel article is characterized by an outer surface having a high ratio of carbides and is substantially free of intergranular oxides. As a result of preventing undesirable surface oxide formations and simultaneously providing a beneficial surface carbide structure, the bending fatigue strength, wear properties, and contact fatigue strength of articles such as gears, shafts, bearings and couplings are greatly enhanced.

    Abstract: A process for producing a titanium material with excellent corrosion resistance, which comprises first applying a degree of cold working of 10% or more of the total working reduction while causing an oil to exist on the surface of the titanium material during cold working thereof and then subjecting the titanium material to in-situ heat treatment at a temperature of 300.degree. C. or higher, thereby forming a layer with excellent corrosion resistance containing at least one of Ti.sub.2 N, TiC and Ti(CN) on the titanium material surface.

The base has a surface containing non-metallic pick-ups in concentration of at least 1 mg/cm.sup.2 at said surface and decreasing inwardly from said surface. The non-metallic pick-ups are selected from the group consisting essentially of: oxygen and carbon; oxygen, carbon and nitrogen; oxygen, carbon and boron; and oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and boron.
