Publication number: 20090282773Abstract: Methods and systems to manufacture lattice-based sandwich structures from monolithic material. Such methods and systems eliminate the bonding process which is conventionally used to join lattice based truss cores to facesheets to form sandwich structures. This bonded interface is a key mode of failure for sandwich structures which are subjected to shear or bending loads because the nodes transfer forces from the face sheets to the core members while the topology for a given core relative density dictates the load carrying capacity (assuming adequate node-bond strength exists). An aspect comprises a core and related structures that provide very low density, good crush resistance and high in-plane shear resistance. An aspect of the truss structures may include sandwich panel cores and lattice truss topology that may be designed to efficiently support panel bending loads while maintaining an open topology that facilitates multifunctional applications.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2007Publication date: November 19, 2009Applicant: UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA PATENT FOUNDATIONInventors: Douglas T. Publication number: 20090038743Abstract: A glass block is formed by stacking, fixing, and integrating a plurality of thin glass plates having a predetermined thickness. An annular glass block is formed by coring the glass block. Surfaces of an inside circumference and an outside circumference of the annular glass block are ground. The annular glass block of which the surfaces of the inside circumference and the outside circumference are ground are separated into individual annular glass substrates, and separated annular glass substrates are cleaned. Then, edge portions of the inside circumference and the outside circumference of a cleaned annular glass substrate are chamfered.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2008Publication date: February 12, 2009Applicants: THE FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO., LTD., KOHKEN KOGYO CO., LTD.Inventors: Tetsuo SUZUKI, Yoshio Kawakami

Patent number: 7486431Abstract: Method and apparatus are presented for the mass production manufacturing of planar mirrors inside transparent micro balls circumscribed by lubricated bearings for solar energy concentration and related applications such as optical switches, etc. These bearings permit rotational alignment of the balls with minimal friction. The preferred mass production process utilizes photolithography in an optical microlithographic photoresist process. The micro-balls are in the size range of ˜1 micron (1×10-6 m) to 1000 microns (1 mm). The micro-balls vary in geometry from spheres to cylinders to oblate ellipsoids to disks. The term “elements” is used to encompass all these shapes, which have one thing in common—a flat specularly reflecting mirrored surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2006Date of Patent: February 3, 2009Inventor: Mario Rabinowitz
