  • Patent number: 4812189
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for joining films by heat sealing, where these films are in rolls (9) and in particular a few microns thick. In a first stage, this process consists in spreading out a first film (1) on an assembly table (5) while hemming one of its longitudinal edges with a junction tape (3) and a positioning tape (4) sealed on that side of the junction tape (4) which is opposite the film. Once the desired film length has been reached, the film is transversely cut off and the positioning tape (4) then is used to handle this first film (1) and to assure its alignment with a segment of the film (2) packed on the roll (9). The second joining stage then consists in spreading out the film (2) on the table (5) while sealing a longitudinal edge of said film (2) to the outer side of the junction tape (3) following separation of the positioning tape (4) from this junction tape (3).

  • Patent number: 4778545
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a fillet to fill a void between two L-shaped structural members which reinforce a composite material skin. A leg of one of the structural members is placed against a leg of the other member, with the second legs of the two members extending outwardly from the adjacent legs. The void is formed between the adjacent rounded outer edges between the legs of each of the members. The apparatus measures the radii of curvature of each of the rounded edges along the length of the member, stores the radii data in an electronic memory, and calculates the area of the void as a function of length along the member. The apparatus then controls a knife to trim an edge from a composite tape so that the trimmed tape has a cross-sectional area equal to the area of the void. The apparatus then forms the fillet from the trimmed tape.

  • Patent number: 4765854
Abstract: A method of sequentially producing a plurality of disposable headdresses in which the edge of the cap fabric has been folded inward around a peripherally extending elastic cord to provide a smooth edge which contacts the wearer, and provides superior adhesion between the elastic cord and the cap fabric by utilizing an elastic cord and fabric which are coated with or made of thermoplastically compatible materials. The elastic cord and fabric are assembled by passing the fabric and the cord through a guide system which turns the fabric side edges down from a horizontal plane to a vertical plane while an edge guide lays the elastic cord under the fabric, and then turns the fabric under the cord to sandwich in the folded edge. Warm air preheaters heat the elastic cord and the fabric before completing the fabric fold around the cord. The folded edges with the cord inside pass between dual heat wheels which physically press the fabric to the cord and also seal the fabric edge to the inside of the crown.

  • Patent number: 4453990
Abstract: A method and apparatus for attaching a reinforcing tape to an intermittent fastener chain. A fastener chain having alternate element-containing and element-free sections is advanced intermittently in the longitudinal direction thereof. When the fastener chain is stopped, a strip of reinforcing tape is moved transversely across an element-free section from the side edge thereof and is folded over the side edge, after which pressure is applied to the side edge from the top and bottom sides of the chain to adhere the strip of reinforcing tape to the side edge. The attachment of the tape is divided into a first attaching step of applying pressure solely to the vicinity of the side edge from both sides of the fastener chain, and a second attaching step of applying pressure to the entire portion of the element-free section having the strip of reinforcing tape folded thereon, from both sides of the fastener chain.

  • Patent number: 4419159
Abstract: In the manufacture of plastic bags having interlocking profiled extrusions for the closure, the extruded plastic profile is applied to the moving web of film immediately after extrusion of the profile. The temperature of the moving web is maintained such that the profile adheres to the moving web upon contact and thereafter cools to set the thermoplastic in the desired profile. The moving web of film is maintained under tension so that contraction of the film upon release compensates for the contraction of the locking profile as it cools to prevent puckering of the web. The locking profile is applied to the web in an in-line process which includes folding and heat sealing the moving web of film to form plastic bags.

  • Patent number: 4392897
Abstract: Molten thermoplastic, such as polyethylene, and a hot melt adhesive are coextruded through a channel shaped profile die. While still molten, the channel shaped strip, having adhesive between the ribs thereof, is brought into contact with a moving web of a thermoplastic, e.g. polyethylene film, which is backed up by a roll at a controlled temperature. The temperature differential between the roll and the molten thermoplastic is maintained so that the thermoplastic adheres to the moving web upon contact and thereafter cools to set the thermoplastic in the channel shaped profile. The web is under tension so that contraction of the film upon release compensates for the contraction of the channel shaped strip as it cools.

  • Patent number: 4377431
Abstract: A method of producing a laminated, pleated fabric is provided which method comprises passing a first layer of fabric through a pleating machine to form temporary pleats and then feeding the first layer of fabric together with an adhesive material and a second layer of fabric onto a winding roller so that the adhesive layer is disposed between the first layer of fabric (which is formed with the temporary pleats) and the second layer of fabric. The three layers are substantially co-extensive in size. The adhesive material is then activated e.g. with steam or dry heat, so that the first and second layers of fabric are laminated together. The steam or heat also makes the pleats in the first layer of fabric permanent. The method can be operated as a relatively simple, continuous process to produce a laminated, pleated fabric which is visually attractive and comfortable to wear.
