Publication number: 20130026816Abstract: Application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer structures to metal vehicle wheels is effective in reducing the mass of the wheel while retaining suitable stiffness in the wheel structure. For maximum effect the reinforced polymer structure and the metal wheel must operate cooperatively. Because of the wide range of operating temperatures experienced by wheels and the large difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between metals and carbon fiber reinforced composites attachment of the polymer structure to the wheel by adhesive alone is problematical. However a wheel with an effective and durable reinforcement may be fabricated by confining, through mechanical interference, the reinforced polymer in a cavity in or on the spoke and by preheating the wheel before curing the polymer.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 11, 2012Publication date: January 31, 2013Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: HAMID G. Patent number: 7955462Abstract: This method to allow the use of low VOC (volatile organic compounds) solvents in blanket cleaning operations and the resultant product that is produced by this method involves the retrofitting of currently existing seals on printing press so that operators can use low VOC solvents in place of high VOC solvents. High VOC solvents are harmful to the atmosphere and humans alike. As VOC are lighter than the surrounding air, humans are subjected to inhalation of these harmful vapors which cause respiratory and other health ailments. The VOC continue to rise, mixing with nitrogen oxides, until they reach the troposphere forming thick layers of ozone or smog. The current movement of municipalities to limit the use of high VOC solvents have lead printers and others to use low VOC solvents which are inherently less evaporative than high VOC solvents. This lack of evaporation causes problems with having to handle greater volumes of waste to handle and dispose properly.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2007Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Inventor: Robert Tubbs

Patent number: 7951252Abstract: A method/apparatus closes and finishes an open end of a product that can be fused together with heat. The apparatus includes a bending stage, a fusing stage, and a pressing/cooling stage, which all can be integrally formed, with the bending stage positioned upstream of the fusing stage, and the pressing/cooling stage positioned downstream of the fusing stage. The apparatus can further include a trimming stage positioned upstream of the bending stage for preparing the ends of a panel. The product has a pair of spaced layers with edges that form an open end. Either one or both of the layers can be heated and rolled toward the other layer while being heated so that they contact and fuse together. The layers can overlap and fuse at their contact surfaces, or the edges can abut to form a butt joint, or the edges can overlap slightly.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2003Date of Patent: May 31, 2011Inventor: Peter Danko

Publication number: 20110100538Abstract: For an arcuate structural member (10) of a fuselage frame, tapes of resin pre-impregnated unidirectional fibers are used. The member (10) includes a web (11) lying in a radial plane and a radially outer cylindrical flange (12). An elongate, arcuate forming mandrel (M1) having a flat radial surface (F) forming an angular edge (D) with a radially outer, convex cylindrical surface (S) is used and a series of promontories (P) radiating outwardly with respect to the cylindrical surface (S) are provided. Layers of pre-impregnated composite material are laid on the mandrel (M1) to form a first flat arcuate laminate (20?), with a part (20?) of the laminate projecting radially outwardly beyond the angular edge (D). The mandrel (M1), the laminate (20?) and the promontories (P) are covered with a membrane (E). A vacuum is then applied to urge the projecting part (20?) of the laminate against the cylindrical surface (S) and against the promontories (P).Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2010Publication date: May 5, 2011Applicant: Alenia Aeronautica S.p.A.Inventors: Sabato INSERRA IMPARATO, Luigi Avagliano, Diego De Luca

Publication number: 20110083796Abstract: A multilayer film is provided which has a core layer, a matte tie layer, and a sealant skin layer. The matte tie layer is intermediate the core and sealant skin layers and includes a first polymer component and a second polymer component. The multilayer film has a surface roughness (Ra) of at least 0.25 ?m and a peak count (Pc) of at least 30 as measured by surface profilometry, and a seal of the sealant layer to itself has a seal strength of greater than about 1400 g/2.54 cm at 127° C. The multilayer film may be oriented in at least one direction and may be metallized, coated, printed, and/or laminated. The multilayer film may be usefully in packaging applications.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2009Publication date: April 14, 2011Inventors: Robert M. Sheppard, Eric W. Bender

Patent number: 7875143Abstract: A label for a container is formed by wrapping a length of label material around a cylindrical mandrel and introducing heat, adhesive or other sealing means into a gap between the leading end portion of the label material and the trailing end portion as the label material is wrapped around the mandrel. The cylindrical sleeve is slid off of the mandrel and telescoped over a container passing thereunder. The container with a cylindrical sleeve therearound is then moved to a heating station which heats the label material, preferably foam polystyrene, to cause it to shrink into conformity with the contour of the container.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2006Date of Patent: January 25, 2011Assignee: GerroPlast GmbHInventor: Robert F.
