Patent number: 7955459Abstract: One side of a metal sheet is joined to a polymer layer by applying heat to a joining area on the opposite side of the metal. The heat flows through the thin metal to activate a thermoplastic material or heat setting polymer into a bond with the metal. The method can be used to bond the metal sheet to a plastic body or another metal member. It is preferred to use a friction or friction stir tool to heat the metal surface.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2008Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Yen-Lung Chen, Peter H. Patent number: 6901986Abstract: The present invention involves a carbon fiber-filled sheet molding compound and method of manufacturing the same. The invention comprises providing chopped automotive carbon fibers, a predetermined resin paste, a first carrier film, and a second carrier film. The method further involves coating substantially completely one side of one of the first and second carrier films with the predetermined resin paste to define a coated side, depositing the chopped automotive carbon fibers onto the coated side, and covering the deposited carbon fibers with the second carrier film to define a compactible carbon-filled laminate. The method further includes compacting the carbon-filled laminate to admix the resin paste with the carbon fibers between the films, whereby to form the automotive carbon fiber-filled sheet molding compound.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2002Date of Patent: June 7, 2005Assignee: Patent Holding CompanyInventor: Frank W. Patent number: 6264132Abstract: A pair of synchronously rotating draw-in devices are placed in contact with an outer layer of a web of material wrapped on a supply roll. The outer layer is pulled between the two draw-in devices. This pulled-in outer layer can them be conveyed to a separate processing station where it can be given a fresh end.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1999Date of Patent: July 24, 2001Assignee: Koenig & Bauer AktiengesellschaftInventors: Martin Günter Menz, Gerd Erich Stettner, Franz Konrad Mezger

Patent number: 5397425Abstract: A pair of plastic tubes are welded together by mounting each tube in the clamp jaws of a holder. A heated wafer is movably mounted in the gap between the tubes to cause the ends of the tubes to melt. The melted ends of the opposed tubes are pressed into contact with each other to form a welded connection. Each side of the wafer has a scoop to remove excess plastic material at the ends of the tubes to control the size of the weld connection. A pair of structural cam elements is used to create a precise spacing between each set of clamp jaws for guiding the wafer to control the plastic volume of the weld. The resulting weld is independent of rheology of plastic. The same device could also be used for disconnect purposes by cutting through a single tube and forming two tube sections. Unique double jaw construction is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1993Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Denco, Inc.Inventors: Ivars V. Ivansons, Valdis Ivansons, Dudley W. C. Patent number: 4931130Abstract: A machine is disclosed for applying adhesive to the small, tubular cores on which paper webs are wound for the manufacture of toilet paper, kitchen towels and the like. The machine also moves the cores from the hopper, and after adhesive is applied, in an axial direction to the paper re-winder.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1988Date of Patent: June 5, 1990Assignee: Perini FinanziariaInventor: Guglielmo Biagiotti

Patent number: 4892263Abstract: An intermittently operating unwinding apparatus has a splicing unit with a cross member which is movable against and at right angles to the web expiring from a winding roll. With a separating device positionable against the cross member from the other side of the web, the web is separated by lifting the empty spool mounted in the unwinding apparatus out of its unwinding position. A new parent roll whose web beginning is provided with an application of adhesive is transported by means of a conveyor to the unwinding position and the web beginning positioned relative to the splicing unit. The splicing unit holding the separated web-end at the cross member is radially moveable against the new parent roll, where the web-end meets the beginning of the web and is attached by means of the adhesive. The web length required to lead the web-end to the new roll is made ready by a dancer roller.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1988Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: J. M. Patent number: 4500376Abstract: Wood veneer strips are butt joined end-to-end for assembly of an indefinite length strip or sheet suitable for reeling. The splicing apparatus clamps the veneer strip ends to be joined in longitudinal planar alignment for trimming by two spaced shear knives having parallel cutting planes. Following the shear cut, a reciprocating carriage for one bed knife to which one veneer strip is clamped is withdrawn from the corresponding cutting plane to permit movement of all shear knife structure from between the carriage and the other, fixed position bed knife without retracting the shear knife edges back past the bed knife edges. The reciprocating carriage is then moved along with its corresponding bed knife and clamped veneer strip into abutment with the fixed position bed knife and respective strip edge where lap splice material is laid across the joint and cured in place under heat and pressure.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1983Date of Patent: February 19, 1985Assignee: Westvaco CorporationInventor: John DeLigt

Patent number: 4279685Abstract: Apparatus for use in film splicing comprising a carriage (11) supporting a first film strip (16A) and a first film scraper (18), means (13) whereby the carriage is laterally movable transverse to the length of the first film strip, a laterally fixed second film scraper (19) and a laterally fixed support (12) for a second film strip (16B). When the carriage is laterally moved back and forth, the first and second scrapers respectively prepare the ends of the second and first film strips simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1980Date of Patent: July 21, 1981Assignee: The Rank Organisation LimitedInventors: Roger C. Patent number: 4042440Abstract: A method and apparatus of splicing a train for veneer sheets being fed in a horizontal direction on infeed and outfeed conveyors operated by electric sensors that signal the conveyors to start or to stop at predetermined appropriate times when the preceding and succeeding veneer sheets pass certain predetermined positions, coordinated with application of a strand and beads of a thermoplastic adhesive onto said train of the veneer sheets on conveyors by a cold press. According to this method and apparatus, the splicing of veneer sheets may be achieved with an increased speed and strength of splicing in the transverse direction, in comparison with conventional method and apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1976Date of Patent: August 16, 1977Assignee: Meinan Machinery Works, Inc.Inventors: Katsuji Hasegawa, Yukio Takagi, Sachio Naito, Kenichi Hiraiwa, Eiji Takasu
