Abstract: An apparatus for making expandable honeycomb structures suitable for use as window coverings. In one embodiment, folded tubular strips with adhesive lines are fed continuously through a cutter which cuts them into predetermined lengths. The cut strips are then accelerated to a stacker for further processing before the next cut strip arrives. In another embodiment, webs of material are fed continuously in a downstream direction, adhesive lines are applied, a middle web is slitted into strips, and the strips bonded along opposite edges to the outer webs. By choosing for the outer webs transparent or porous material, and for the middle web opaque material, a light or air controlling honeycomb structure results.

  • Patent number: 6334923
Abstract: A method of making multiple laminated shingles from a single sheet of roofing material. When four shingles are to be made, the sheet is cut into five strips, namely first and second double shims, first and second single tooth strips, and a double tooth strip. Each double shim is then laminated below the tooth portion of a single tooth strip and the tooth portion at one side of a double tooth strip, to produce a single lamination strip. The lamination strip is then slit lengthwise and crosscut by a single conventional shingle cutter to produce four sets of shingles across the width of the lamination strip. The process can produce other numbers of shingle sets. In all cases, the various strips needed are, after being cut, reassembled into a single lamination strip so that they can be slit and crosscut by a single standard shingle cutter.

  • Patent number: 5846376
Abstract: A paper corrugator machine has a closed loop for delivering warm adhesive from a source to a pan from which the adhesive is applied onto the crests of the corrugated paper flutes. To insure a delivery of the correct amount of adhesive to the flute crests, a predetermined amount of adhesive is first accumulated in a graduated column. Then, the adhesive delivery feed is switched from the closed loop to the graduated column. A detector senses upper and lower limits of the amount of the adhesive in the column. The rate of the delivery of adhesive is determined by how long it takes for the predetermined amount of adhesive to be delivered from the column to the corrugating machine. Responsive to this determination, the corrugating machine may be adjusted to apply more or less adhesive to the flute crests.

  • Patent number: 5824178
Abstract: A process for making a laminated sheet by cutting a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin sheet into a plurality of cut sheets. The cut sheets are feed to a butting apparatus to bring adjacent end faces of the cut sheets against each other. The abutted cut sheets are joined to a continuous sheet, which is a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin sheet, by melt welding using a heated roller where the cut sheets and the continuous sheet cling to the heated roller. Cooling of the joined cut sheets and continuous sheet occurs by causing such to cling to a cooling roller. A correcting roller is moved along the cooling roller, where the joined cut sheets and continuous sheet are between the cooling roller and the correcting roller, so that the amount of contact arc between the joined cut sheets and continuous sheet is changed to adjust the amount of warp in the joined cut sheets and continuous sheet.

  • Patent number: 5792307
Abstract: An apparatus for forming a corrugated substrate comprises a first assembly for advancing liner sheets including a corrugated medium and facing sheets and a second assembly for advancing fluting sheets. Each fluting sheet has bend surfaces along its top and bottom sides. An applicator applies adhesive along at least one of the top and bottom sides of the fluting sheets. The first assembly and second assembly advance the liner sheets and fluting sheets into contact with one another along the side of the fluting sheet having the adhesive. The fluting sheets are secured to the liner sheets to form a layered article having an upper and lower surface. A means for correlating operates the first assembly, second assembly, and applicator so that in each cycle of operation the layered article adheres to at least an additional layered article in succession.

  • Patent number: 5776287
Abstract: A coupon manufacturing machine assembly (10) for producing a two-sided coupon card (78). The coupon card (78) is fabricated from a continuous sheet of stock (26) wherein the sheet of stock (26) has an adhesive layer (30) and a release film (32) applied to a bottom surface (34). A printing station (12) prints indicia on a top surface (36) of the continuous sheet of stock (26) in two parallel rows. The two parallel rows define a first strip (38) and a second strip (40) of the stock (26). A laminating device (14) applies a clear laminate (46) to the top surface (36) of the stock (26) for viewing the indicia. A cutting device (16) separates the continuous sheet of stock (26) into the first strip (38) and the second strip (40) and an inverting device (18) rotates the second strip (40) 180.degree. relative to the first strip (38). More specifically, the second strip (40) passes through a first turn bar (52), a spacing roller (58), and then through a second turn bar (54) to effectuate the 180.degree. rotation.

  • Patent number: 5772838
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for production of laminated electronic or electrical devices are described which enables one thin patterned or unpatterned substrate to be easily and accurately incorporated into a previous stack of substrates by registration of a coated tape from which the substrate is excised. In the present invention the tape is indexed to a fixed position and then a platen with the previously stacked substrates is brought into registration with the stationary tape, following which the substrate is excised from the coated tape and added to the stack of substrates. Since the tape always is positioned in the equipment as indexed at the same location with each indexing step, and since once indexed the tape does not move, the platen can be brought into accurate alignment and registration with the tape.

Abstract: A method for producing one or more individual stacks of superimposed, secured together, expandable tubular strips forming an expandable honeycomb panel. The strips coated with adhesive are advanced sequentially to the inlet of a stacking chamber having an elevated floor with a longitudinally extending slot of a length to receive each strip and which is narrower than the width of the strips to be delivered thereto. The strip so delivered is pushed up through the narrower slot and against the strip just previously delivered to the chamber, to adhere it to the latter strip. The chamber has a weight bar to exert a downward force on the stack of strips to provide good adherence between the strip.
