  • Patent number: 6626222
Abstract: A method for fabricating semiconductor components, such as BGA packages, chip scale packages, and multi chip modules, includes the steps of cutting decals from ribbons of adhesive tape, and then attaching a semiconductor die to a substrate using the decals. A system for performing the method includes a tape cutting apparatus configured to cut the decals from the tape without wasted tape, and then to apply the cut decals to the substrate. A first finished dimension (e.g., width) of the decals is determined by a width of the tape, and a second finished dimension (e.g., length) of the decals is determined by indexing the tape through a selected distance. The tape cutting apparatus includes cutters configured to move through guide openings to cut and apply the decals to the substrate. The guide openings align the tape to the cutters, and also align the cut decals to the substrate. The system also includes a substrate handling apparatus configured to index and position the substrate relative to the guide openings.

Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus for attaching a cutting strip to a carton blank. The apparatus includes a first member for conveying carton blanks past a second member, and the second member is arranged to cut a cuffing strip from a supply of cuffing strip material and deposit the cutting strip upon a carton blank. The first member may be a conveyor belt fitted with a suction member, and the second member may be upper and lower dies that are movable relative to one another and a member that can feed a supply of cutting strip material between the dies. Initial downward movement of the upper die cuts a cutting strip from the supply of cutting strip material and the cutting strip is retained on the upper die. Further downward movement of the upper die brings the cutting strip into contact with a carton blank. The apparatus may also include an alignment member to ensure that the carton blanks are properly positioned relative to the second member when the cutting strips are attached.

Abstract: This invention provides a method and apparatus for applying tape tabs to a traveling web, for example, for placement of fastening tabs on a running web of disposable diapers. The invention provides a cutting roll positioned to cut segments from a continuous infeeding web of tape material against a rotating anvil. The anvil, which is traveling at a speed equal to or very close to that of the infeeding tape web, carries the tape segments to a point on its tangency where a higher-speed traveling diaper web most nearly approaches, at which point the traveling diaper web is displaced slightly toward the anvil by means of a protuberance acting against the web. This movement causes it to come into contact with the next available tape segment, which becomes adhered to the higher-speed traveling web. This process provides for operation at higher speeds, higher efficiencies, greater flexibility and lower noise levels than previous processes.

  • Patent number: 6182730
Abstract: A label application apparatus comprising a main housing and a printer and an applicator mounted to the main housing for applying a label to an object. A supply reel is rotatably mounted to the main housing and has a continuous web of label material thereon. A feed mechanism is also provided for feeding the continuous web of label material from the supply reel to the printer and applicator. A cutting mechanism is associated with the applicator to cut labels from the continuous web of label material between the printer and the applicator whereby the applicator then places the severed label onto the object.

  • Patent number: 6164356
Abstract: A low pressure actuated labeling apparatus (10) for printing, cutting, and applying labels (L) to articles (A). A printing unit (12) prints information on a label, the label being drawn from a roll (13) of continuous label stock. A cutting unit (14) cuts a printed label from an end of the roll with the cut label being deposited on a tamper unit (16) which transports the label to a position (P2) adjacent the article and affixes the label to the article. Guides (26, 28) guide the label between the printing and cutting units. One of the guides (26) includes a plate (102) having spaced slots (106a-106c) in which are installed guides (108,110,112). The guides each include guide arms which are contacted by an adhesive side (Y) of the label. However, the guides are made of a material to which the label will not adhere, thus insuring continued movement of the label.

  • Patent number: 6159327
Abstract: Apparatus and method for making a plurality of substrates laminated on two sides by applying a plurality of laminate sheets to corresponding plurality of substrates. The apparatus includes a lamina supply member capable of holding a supply of lamina from which successive sheets of lamina can be cut. One or more cutters are disposed in the apparatus such that the cutters are capable of cutting through the lamina to provide successive sheets of laminate. One or more heaters are provided for bonding sheets of laminate to corresponding sides of a substrate whereby the corresponding top and bottom laminated substrate is formed. The supply of lamina is characterized by a current leading edge. The supply of lamina is cut through along a cutting line at a predetermined distance from the current leading edge of the lamina. This provides a first sheet of laminate having a trailing edge at the cutting line. Cutting also provides the lamina supply with a successive leading edge at the cutting line.

  • Patent number: 6143105
Abstract: A label applicator, easily mounted on a desktop in association with a label printer, has a compact configuration with no external power requirements since the components are electrically powered and the power is received from the printer. Preferably the label does not move during application, providing a high degree of accuracy and placement. The applicator may be used with both linered and linerless labels and associated printers, and uses inexpensive components. Positive stops are provided for stopping the movement of a label into the applicator housing, and the manual movement of a mailpiece into the applicator housing. Sensors sense the label and the mailpiece when accurately aligned, and cause actuation of a linear solenoid with tamp pad to move the mailpiece vertically upwardly into contact with the label pressure sensitive adhesive. The label is held in place in the desired position by one or more electric fans exhausting air from the opposite face of an apertured plate from the label.

  • Patent number: 6086694
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for applying swatches to a continuously traveling web, which is usually preprinted, and which is severed into sheets of a predetermined repeat length. When going from one size of repeat length to another size of repeat length, swatch-applying cylinders are profiled to match the cylinder velocity to the web velocity during a swatch application over a first portion of a revolution of the swatch cylinder and then the rotational velocity is changed substantially during a sync recovery portion of the cylinder's revolution. Preferably, the adhesive, which is applied to the web to adhere the swatches, is by an adhesive cylinder which is similarly provided with a matching velocity portion of a revolution and a sync recovery portion at a different velocity. The cutting operation is preferably by a knife cylinder which is also similarly profiled.

  • Patent number: 6085818
Abstract: A material sheet assembly in which a label base attached to a release liner by means of an adhesive is set in roll form is used. In a step in which the material sheet assembly is continuously fed out, the release liner is released by leaving the adhesive on the label base, and the release liner is consecutively taken up. By using a noncontact-type printer, printing is effected on the adhesive surface of the label base separated from the release liner to form a printed label. The printed label is in such a form that the printed surface is disposed between the label base and an adherend. The labels can be attached immediately after they are manufactured, and they can be stored or transported by being taken up in roll form while an additional release liner is attached to the printed surface side.

  • Patent number: 6030481
Abstract: Color swatch charts are formed by feeding sheets eighteen inches or longer in length with this long dimension of the sheet disposed transversely to the sheet travel direction. Ribbons in a row of eighteen inches or longer are simultaneously severed with the first and last swatch in each row of identical size and with the swatches having four square corners to form a rectangular shape. This orientation of the long axis of the sheet reduces the number of stations and the length of travel of the sheets, thereby increasing production. The sheets are fed through an adhesive applying station where spots of adhesive are applied in rows to the sheet. The sheet travels through a series of swatch forming and applying stations. At each such station, a plurality of swatch ribbons are fed forwardly and severed to form the individual swatches in a row; and a row of swatches is then transferred to and adhered by the adhesive spots on the sheet.
