  • Patent number: 7955462
Abstract: This method to allow the use of low VOC (volatile organic compounds) solvents in blanket cleaning operations and the resultant product that is produced by this method involves the retrofitting of currently existing seals on printing press so that operators can use low VOC solvents in place of high VOC solvents. High VOC solvents are harmful to the atmosphere and humans alike. As VOC are lighter than the surrounding air, humans are subjected to inhalation of these harmful vapors which cause respiratory and other health ailments. The VOC continue to rise, mixing with nitrogen oxides, until they reach the troposphere forming thick layers of ozone or smog. The current movement of municipalities to limit the use of high VOC solvents have lead printers and others to use low VOC solvents which are inherently less evaporative than high VOC solvents. This lack of evaporation causes problems with having to handle greater volumes of waste to handle and dispose properly.

Abstract: A protocol for determining process parameters for debulking composite laminates is established using a standardized double vacuum debulk (DVD) process. This allows for the development of a rapid fabrication process for thick laminates of toughened carbon/epoxy composite materials. The protocol provides for obtaining cure and current consolidation information of a composite material system as a preliminary baseline. A test matrix is prepared for varying time/temp profiles to pursue better results or find process limits and the testing defined by the matrix is run with variations of time/temp DVD profiles to confirm data values. Results for the process variations in the test matrix are then assessed. An optimum consolidation is determined and process points are defined at which quality drops off. The protocol results are then applied to part preparation for the material tested.

An inspection using ultraviolet light to locate any unwanted residual mask material on the external surface is carried out and unwanted residual mask material is removed before the coating is applied to the external surface of the component and the masked cooling holes. In the end the mask material is removed from the cooling holes.

Abstract: A novel method for refurbishing a rubber disc used in a recycle machine comprises the steps of cleaning and sanding the surface of the disc; priming at least the surface of the disc with a liquid primer or interfacing agent (adhesive); placing the disc in a portion of a mold; charging or filling the mold with a polymer (synthetic rubber or elastomer) mixed with a suitable catalyst, hardener or activator; allowing the synthetic rubber polymer to exothermally cure inside the mold; and withdrawing the disc from the mold. The resulting refurbished disc is characterized by a new outer surface layer (synthetic rubber) adhered to the original rubber disc. In an alternatively preferred method, one or more relatively small holes are formed in the surface of the disc prior to molding the new outer surface layer on the disc whereupon the strength of the bond between the new outer layer and the original disc is enhanced.

Abstract: A process for recycling scrap of shoe stiffener comprising the steps of: 1. Kneading the collected scrap of shoe stiffener, having a core layer of TPU resin material (with filler) sandwiched in between two opposite net fabric layers, to be dense clumps; 2. Freezing the dense clumps to be hard frozen clumps; 3. Crushing the hard frozen clumps to be a crushed product including pellets of resin material, and short fibers; and 4. Extruding the crushed product including pellets and short fibers to produce a regenerated core layer; and covering or laminating two net fabric layers on opposite sides of the regenerated core layer to obtain a regenerated shoe stiffener sheet to enhance environmental protection and prevent from wasting of material resources.

Abstract: A method for repairing/strengthening and crack arrest of pipe, especially metal pipe, in which, first, to cover an insulated material on the position needing repairing/strengthening and crack arrest, then to lay a high strength fiber composite material. The modulus of elasticity of the material used in the invention is close to the metal pipe's, it can be integrated with the pipe and bear the internal pressure with the pipe, thus the final composite pipe reaches required bear capacity, such as, the original most operation pressure of pipe can be recovered; and it can take effect for crack arrest of pipes when pipes happen burst accident. Otherwise, because of the insulated material is used on the bottom layer, it prevent thoroughly from galvanic corrosion between pipe and strengthening material.

Abstract: A method, in which a damaged site of a composite material structure, for example a wing skin on an aircraft, is repaired, includes the steps of repairing the damaged site with repair material, including adhesive, and at the same time bonding a test fixture, for example a button, at a test site next to the repair, by means of material that is the same as the repair material. The conditions to which the damaged site and the test site are subjected are substantially the same. After repair, the strength of the repair bond may be indirectly assessed by applying a torque to the test fixture, so as to assess the bond strength of the test fixture to the structure.
