    Abstract: The internal bulk of a tissue web can be improved during manufacturing of the basesheet by subjecting the tissue web to differential pressure while supported on a coarse fabric at a consistency of about 30 percent or greater. The differential pressure, such as by applying vacuum suction to the underside of the coarse fabric, causes the wet web to deflect into the openings or depressions in the fabric and "pop" back, resulting in a substantial gain in thickness or internal bulk. The method is especially adapted to improve the internal bulk of throughdried tissue webs.

The ply includes from at least about 20% by weight to about 50% by weight of relatively long strength-enhancing cellulosic fiber chosen from chemically pulped softwood fiber and chemi-thermo-mechanically pulped softwood fiber and mixtures thereof. The strength-enhancing cellulosic fiber have a weight average fiber length of about 2 to about 4 mm, a coarseness of about 14 to about 28 mg/100 m. Optionally, up to about 30% by weight of bulk-enhancing fibers having a three-dimensional anfractuous character may be provided.

The web of paper towel material has an enhanced rate of absorption and water holding capacity.

In the process, an aqueous dispersion of the papermaking fibers is formed into an embryonic web on a first foraminous member such as a Fourdinier wire. This embryonic web is associated with a second foraminous member known as a deflection member. The surface of the deflection member with which the embryonic web is associated has a macroscopic monoplanar, continuous, patterned network surface which defines within the deflection member a plurality of discrete, isolated deflection conduits. The papermaking fibers in the web are deflected into the deflection conduits and water is removed through the deflection conduits to form an intermediate web. Deflection begins no later than the time water removal through the deflection member begins. The intermediate web is dried and foreshortened as by creping. The paper web has a distinct continuous network region and a plurality of domes dispersed throughout the whole of the network region.

    Abstract: Two or more webs (11 and 12) of highly bulked substrate are passed into a nip formed between a gravure roller (14) and an impression roller (15). The impression roller has raised areas defining an interconnected network of lines such that the webs are compressed only under the raised areas; as a result, the binding liquid applied by the gravure roller (14) to the laminate of the two webs is absorbed substantially through the webs in the compressed areas. The gravure roller (14) may have a uniform surface, such that a light coating of binding liquid is applied to the surface of the uncompressed areas in the laminate, or the gravure roller may have a pattern of etched grooves or cells which matches and registers with the pattern of raised areas on the impression roller. In the latter embodiment, binding liquid will be absorbed into the laminate only in the compressed areas.

The second and third steps in the basic process are the deposition of the papermaking furnish onto a foraminous surface such as a Fordrinier wire and removal of the water from the deposited furnish.
