    Abstract: Provided is a multi-layered water-decomposable fibrous sheet with a plurality of layers each having a different fibrous constitution being integrated, including a top layer on a top surface and a back layer on a back surface. The top layer includes fibrillated rayon of at least 3% by mass of all fibers constituting the top layer. The fibrillated rayon has a degree of beating of at most 700 cc, and has primary fibers of a predetermined fiber length and microfibers extending from the primary fibers. The microfibers are entangled with and/or hydrogen-bonded to at least either of other microfibers and other fibers. The back layer includes fibers containing no fibrillated rayon, the fibers entangled with and/or hydrogen-bonded to each other, or the back layer includes the fibrillated rayon in an amount smaller than that in the top layer. The microfibers of the fibrillated rayon are entangled with and/or hydrogen-bonded to at least either of other microfibers and other fibers.

    Abstract: A super microfibrillated cellulose having an arithmetic average fiber length of 0.05 to 0.1 mm, a water retention value of at least 350%, a rate of the number of fibers not longer than 0.25 mm of at least 95% based on the total number of the fibers as calculated by adding up, and an axial ratio of the fibers of at least 50. The super microfibrillated cellulose is produced by passing a slurry of a previously beaten pulp through a rubbing apparatus having two or more grinders which are arranged so that they can be rub together to microfibrillate the pulp to obtain microfibrillated cellulose and further super microfibrillate the obtained microfibrillated cellulose with a high-pressure homogenizer to obtain the super microfibrillated cellulose. A coated paper produced with a coating material containing the super microfibrillated cellulose, and a tinted paper produced from a paper stock containing the super microfibrillated cellulose as a carrier carrying a dye or pigment are also provided.

The decorative pattern is incorporated into the forming fabric by a variety of means, such as stitching, silk screening, printing, weaving, or overlaying a fabric with a decorative pattern onto a conventional forming fabric. The presence of decoratively-shaped areas in the forming fabric, which are areas of relatively slow water drainage, cause corresponding areas in the resulting sheet to have a translucent appearance attributable to a relatively lower basis weight and/or different fiber composition. The decorative patterns are preferably formed in the outer or surface layer(s) of the paper sheet.

The facial tissues are made from a multi-layered paper web containing a middle layer of eucalyptus fibers either alone or in combination with polyester fibers. The paper web is made with a debonding agent for producing a web having reduced levels of fiber bonding. Once formed, the paper web is treated on each side with a bonding agent in a preselected pattern. Both sides of the paper web are also creped. In order to create a smooth low friction surface, the paper web is fed through a calendering machine and treated with a friction reducing composition and subsequently dried.

    Abstract: A process for manufacturing a filter medium includes preparing a pH 3-5 aqueous suspension of cellulose fibers in a pulper or beater with a concentration of between 3% and 5%. A pH 2.8-3.8 aqueous suspension of glass fibers is prepared in a pulper or beater with a fiber concentration of between 0.5% and 1.2%. A first pulp consisting exclusively of cellulose fibers is prepared, to which a moisture-resistant resin is added. A second pulp is prepared consisting of cellulose fibers and glass fibers in proportions of between 30% and 70%, to which a moisture-resistant resin is added. Two superposed layers of the pulps are formed by methods used in paper manufacture. The two layers are collected on a layer of material able to absorb water. The two superposed layers of pulp are pressed to a pressure of between 0.1 and 1 kg/cm.sup.2. The resultant sheet is dried to a moisture content of 1%. The dried material is impregnated with a 50 wt % solution of acrylic latex, and dried again.

    Abstract: Stiffness improvements for multi-ply paperboard laid from chemically pulped softwood and hardwood papermaking furnish are obtained by fiber fractionating the softwood pulp and repositioning the resulting fractions. Chemically pulped and preferably bleached softwood fiber "rejects" of a fractionation screen are redistributed into the outer plies of a three-ply, 300-350 g/m (approximately 195 #/3,000 ft.) basis weight paperboard. The fractionation "accepts" are repositioned to the center ply for a 12% to 15% increase in Taber stiffness. The short, "accept" fiber from the fractionation screen is mixed with chemically pulped hardwood fiber or modified mechanical pulp of either species for formation of the center ply on a multiformer paper machine.

Optionally starch and a cationic nitrogenous softener/debonder is added. The starch and softener/debonder are added to assist in tailor making the desired paper product having temporary wet strength.

An upper and/or lower ply bonded to the base ply covers any printing or contamination of the base ply, thus allowing the resulting web to be reprinted or used for writing or packaging grades. The base ply is not repulped, reducing water and energy usage in the manufacturing process. The upper and lower plies may be wet formed or dry formed. Dry-formed upper and/or lower plies result in a paper product utilizing little or no water in the manufacturing process, and no aqueous effluent. The post-manufactured base ply provides the strength ply. Multiple layers in the base ply or, alternatively, a contrast-reducing process on printed surfaces of the base ply, reduce show through of the final web.

    Abstract: The foam process is used to make non-woven webs from cellulose or synthetic fibers, which webs have as a component super absorbent polymer (SAP). In order to minimize water absorbency by the SAP, it may have a protective coating that dissolves only after in contact with water a few seconds; the SAP may be frozen (e.g. to about -18.degree. C.); and/or the SAP may be transported by highly chilled (e.g. about 1.degree. C.) water. The SAP, and liquid or foam carrier, is fed as a small volume flow into a conduit carrying a high volume flow of a fiber containing foam slurry, just before a foraminous element. A mechanical mixer may be provided in the conduit for mixing the SAP with the fiber-foam slurry. The addition of the SAP to the carrier fluid takes place no more than ten seconds (preferably no more than five seconds) before the fiber-foam slurry mixed with SAP is brought into operative association with one or more foraminous elements.

Preferably, the majority of the biodegradable chemical softening compositions will be disposed on the outer layers of the multi-layered tissue paper products where they are most effective at enhancing softness.

The base ply is not repulped, reducing water and energy usage in the manufacturing process. The upper and lower plies may be wet formed or dry formed. Dry formed upper and/or lower plies result in a paper product utilizing little or no water in the manufacturing process, and no aqueous effluent. The post-manufactured base ply provides the strength ply.

In homogenous tissue, these properties are obtained by adding a strength enhancing agent to separate furnish sources prior to the funish sources being combined, and further, optionally adding the softener to the nascent web.

The impermeable sheet is preferably formed from a slurry of cellulosic fiber and water and the organic layer is preferably formed from a slurry of fiber, water and finely chopped organic material, such as straw, manure, leaves or almond wood chips. The fiber and chopped organic material provide a semi-rigid mulch cover for suppressing weeds around the plant. The mulch cover is easily positioned around the plant and, once it is so disposed, will be relatively impervious to severe weather, such as heavy rainfall and winds. The chopped organic material, particularly almond wood chips, enhance the appearance of the mulch cover.
