  • Publication number: 20090314442
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of structural hybrid thermoplastic composites where organic and inorganic fibres are well dispersed in a thermoplastic matrix. The process comprises defibrillating the organic fibres with or without the presence of surface active agents using a mixer at a high shear and at a temperature lower than the decomposition temperature of organic fibres and melting point of the surface active agents to separate the hydrogen bonded fibres and generate microfibres, followed by blending and dispersion of the organic fibres in the thermoplastic matrix to produce a fibre composite, followed by further blending and dispersion of the fibre composite with inorganic fibres at a low shear to get the moldable hybrid composite, followed by extrusion, injection or compression-injection molding. Low shear mixing maintains the inorganic fibre length.

Abstract: The present invention aims to provide cellulose-based fibrous materials for obtaining papers and sheets having low density, high surface quality, good size stability despite of high strength, and high opacity. Cellulose-based fibrous materials having external fibrils consisting of an assembly of scale-like microfibrils exhibit a higher fiber stiffness, a lower water retention value and a higher specific surface area as compared with fibrous materials having filamentous external fibrils at the same freeness. Papers and sheets having low density, high surface quality, good size stability and high opacity can be obtained by using such fibrous materials.

  • Patent number: 7019054
Abstract: A formulation, and a process for making same, is disclosed which is useful as a coating or treatment for imparting oil and grease resistance to an underlying substrate. The formulation does not contain any fluorochemicals. At the same time, however, the formulation provides oil and grease resistance properties that are equivalent to known coatings and treatments which contain fluorochemicals, particularly those coatings which are permitted to come into direct contact with food products. Therefore, the formulation of the present invention is ideal for use as a coating for paper and paperboard, including paper packaging such as that utilized in food wrappers, food containers, food receptacles and the like, and for other shaped articles. The formulation is also useful as a coating or treatment for providing release properties to an underlying substrate without the use of silicone.

  • Patent number: 6059926
Abstract: To manufacture a diaphragm of the present invention for use in a loud speaker, first a suspension is made by putting fibers consisting chiefly of polysaccharide constituting fibrous molecules into water. Next, suitable pressure is applied to the suspension and then the suspension is jet out into the air of normal pressure. As a result, water which has penetrated into the fibers expands rapidly. This causes the fibers to be sufficiently loosen and split into fibrils. When the fibrils are used for manufacturing a diaphragm, since the fibrils get sufficiently entangled together, a highly stiff and elastic diaphragm with high internal loss is obtained. Optimum fibrils are obtained by simply adjusting the pressure. Therefore, the control of the manufacturing process is simplified.

  • Patent number: 5698291
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for producing a crimp-bonded fibrous cellulosic laminate. The process includes the steps of: 1) providing at least two superposed plies of a fibrous cellulosic material; 2) passing the superposed plies through a crimp roll arrangement including a rotating crimp element and a rotating anvil element; and 3) applying a pressure load against the rotating elements sufficient to crimp bond the fibrous cellulosic material plies into a laminate. The crimp element has protruding members configured in a discontinuous pattern aligned on an axis that is parallel to the cross-machine direction to provide a substantially continuous uniform area of localized surface contacts between the rotating crimp and anvil elements across the width of the plies. Also disclosed is an overall crimp-bonded fibrous cellulosic laminate and an apparatus for crimp-bonding multiple superposed plies of a fibrous cellulosic material.

Abstract: A method is used for making disposable trays and bowls with organic materials or herbaceous plants that can be easily disintegrated and that has low economical value. The organic materials include straws, bagasses or forage grasses etc., which are cheap and can be easily obtained. The manufacturing costs of the trays and bowls are thus competitive in price and suitable for producing disposable trays and bowls for containing food. No waste water and gas will be produced such that the method meets the requirement of environmental protection.

Abstract: The diaphragm of the electroacoustic transducer is made of a material in which fibers having at least two different radii taken out of wood are mixed together. Two mean radii A and B, among different mean radii of the fibers are set to satisfy the relationship: 0.5.times.A.ltoreq.B.ltoreq.0.5.times.A. By utilizing such a diaphragm, the balance of the density, rigidity, and internal loss of the diaphragm can be improved, and thus the acoustic characteristics of the electroacoustic transducer such as a speaker unit can be improved.

  • Patent number: 4994148
Abstract: A method for recycling wood fiber products and particularly newspaper-type pulp, into a new and useful molded product is disclosed. A quantity of paper to be recycled is mixed with sufficient water to form a viscous pulp or slurry by beating the pulp to a desired consistency for a given texture of the product to be made. A pulp press is employed which has a molding chamber with interior sidewalls comprised of a rigid screen through which water can pass and a rigid plate outboard from the screen. The rigid plate has channels formed therein facing the screen through which channels water can flow. One of the sidewalls is movable into the molding chamber to serve as a piston. Some means to drive the movable sidewall, such as an hydraulic jack, completes the press. The beaten pulp is poured into the molding chamber. The chamber is then closed, and the press operated by moving the movable sidewall into the chamber to compress the beaten pulp to a desired pressure and pulp density.

Abstract: Economical manufacturing of wood powder-molded products becomes possible with the introduction of wood pulp as the binding agent to be used in combination with water. The molded products feature not only high moisture absorbing capability and a unique natural touch of hybrid between wood and paper, but easy and convenient disposability after use. The product can be molded into any shape, but the method would be more suitable for manufacturing small-size pellet products form the practical standpoint to perform drying (dehydration) process. This invention enables to utilize wood powder resources including sawdust, which is currently disposed of in a huge amount as the industrial waste, all over the world.
