  • Patent number: 7384510
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for determining the permeability of a circulating band, in particular a water-absorbing dewatering band in a papermaking machine. The apparatus is equipped with a nozzle from which a measuring fluid flows onto or through the band. Fluctuations in the flow of the measuring fluid and in the nozzle exit pressure can distort the measurement of the permeability. The apparatus has a device for determining the speed of the band and/or a device for determining the nozzle exit speed and the nozzle exit pressure of the measuring fluid. These three measured variables are measured simultaneously, so that a fluctuation in one of these measured variables cannot impair the accuracy of the permeability measurement.

Abstract: A method of cleaning papermaking felt by applying a low concentration of a cleaning solution through the oscillating needle nozzles. The detergent is applied intermittently while paper is being manufactured. Each cleaning period lasts for at least the length of time required for the nozzles to cover the entire surface of the felt, and preferably twice that period of time. Abstract: In an enclosed shoe press having a press blanket extending through an extended nip defined between a backing roll and a press shoe, an anchor device is disclosed for anchoring a peripheral edge of the press blanket. The anchor device includes a rotatable head which defines a conical peripheral surface for supporting the blanket. A ring defines a concave surface which cooperates with the conical surface of the rotatable head such that the peripheral edge of the blanket is anchored between the conical surface of the head and the concave surface of the ring. Also, a pin extends radially inwardly from the ring, the pin engaging a hole defined by the peripheral edge of the blanket. Additionally, a plurality of barbs extend away from the concave surface for assisting in anchoring the peripheral edge of the blanket against the conical surface of the rotatable head.

  • Patent number: 6846385
Abstract: A vibration-minimizing suspension mechanism for a press roll is provided. The press roll and an opposing roll each having a rotational axis and cooperate to form a press nip for imparting a linear load on a web passing therethrough. The linear load is oriented through the rotational axes of the press and opposing rolls. The suspension mechanism comprises a suspension arm having opposed ends and a medially-disposed pivot, wherein the rotational axis of the press roll is rotatably engaged with one of the opposed ends. The suspension arm is pivotably and adjustably mounted at the pivot to allow the pivot to be adjusted in substantially parallel relation to the linear load. The adjustable pivot thereby allowing a mounting line, defined by the pivot and the rotational axis of the press roll, to be maintained in substantially perpendicular orientation to the linear load to thereby minimize vibration in the press roll.

Abstract: A system for removing dust, dirt and like from the surface of a flexible paper substrate and accurately positioning same comprises a transport assembly for conveying the paper substrate along a path of travel. The transport assembly includes a rotating vacuum drum having an outer surface over which the paper substrate is trained in the direction of drum rotation as it moves along the path of travel. Openings are provided in the outer surface of the vacuum drum, and a suction source is connected to those openings so that dust, dirt and the like on the surface of the paper substrate are drawn away by the suction as the paper substrate moves along the path of travel over the drum. The linear speed of the paper substrate is slightly more or less than the surface velocity of the vacuum drum so that the paper sweeps across the drum surface during the cleaning process.

Abstract: The invention relates generally to an improvement to a rotary joint and stationary siphon system typically for use in the papermaking process. Disclosed is a siphon support that has a bearing that rotatably engages with a siphon and flow openings that allow for steam flow from the rotary joint to the interior of a heat exchange roll. Further disclosed is a support device with a flow section that receives steam from the rotary joint and transmits it on to the heat exchange roll, wherein the flow section raises the pressure differential across the rotary joint by less than about 2 p.s.i. The support device is also only attached to the rotary joint and siphon thereby reduces the cantilever effect of the stationary siphon. Further disclosed are systems for papermaking that include the siphon support and rotary joint; the siphon support and stationary siphon; and the support, rotary joint and siphon. Further disclosed is a method of assembly wherein the support device is attached to a rotary joint and siphon.
