  • Patent number: 6709549
Abstract: A multi-reel apparatus for use in a drying section of a papermaking machine allows a web to be continuously wound without interruption. The apparatus includes a web support and a pair of vertically stacked reeling stations located along an inclined portion of the web support. Each reeling station has at least one reeling device operable to hold and rotatably drive a core onto which the web can wound to form a roll. Each reeling device is further operable to move the core into engagement with the web on the web support to initiate winding of the web onto the core, and to move the core away from the web support when the roll is fully wound. Winding is alternated between reeling devices, allowing the completed roll to be removed and a new core to be loaded at one reeling station while the other reeling station continues in full winding operation.

Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to a process for hot embossing a base sheet and/or to a process for perforating and bonding multiple plies of a paper product together. The process can be used in order to apply a decorative pattern to a paper product and/or to bond multiple ply products together. In one embodiment, the process of the present invention includes feeding a previously formed single ply or multi-ply base sheet through a heated embossing nip. As the base sheet passes through the heated embossing nip, sufficient heat and pressure is imparted to cause the fibers within the sheet to begin to melt or glassinate. Upon cooling, inter-fiber bonding occurs resulting in a well-defined embossment as well as bonding between plies of a multi-ply product.

Abstract: An apparatus to facilitate tail threading of a paper web and a method of threading the tail of a paper web (1) to be coated through a coating line during startup or web break, in which an edge strip is slit from the web to act as the tail of the web which is first threaded through the line and then widened to the normal width of the web by moving the edge strip slitter. Said edge strip is first guided to a movable support element (12) located after the edge strip slitting point in the travel direction of the web (1) and the strip is supported against said movable support element (12) and is passed supported by said movable support element (12) to the next support element (14).

Abstract: An apparatus and method for cleanly breaking a continuously advancing cellulose web includes a transfer fabric which supports and advances the cellulose web to a wind up zone. The transfer fabric forms a closed loop and is driven at a desired speed by a drive roll. At least two spray nozzles are arranged transversely across the advancing cellulose web as it is carried on the transfer fabric. The spray nozzles are capable of emitting a liquid under high pressure against the advancing cellulose web to form perforations across the width thereof. A plurality of hollow cores are independently and sequentially moved into position at the wind up zone to receive the advancing cellulose web. The hollow cores are located downstream of the spray nozzles and each hollow core is capable of accumulating a predetermined amount of the cellulose web.

  • Patent number: 6022452
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting a tail in a web sheet traveling through a nip between the queen roll and king roll of a calender includes a waterjet positioned adjacent the edge of the web upstream from the nip for directing a jet of water towards the web and the queen roll. The waterjet cuts a tip or leader and creates a tail that continues to travel with the remainder of the web sheet towards and through the nip. The waterjet penetrates the web and splashes against the queen roll such that the wetted portion of the queen roll compresses against the leader of the tail to carry or pull the tail around the queen roll. A doctor blade is mounted in engagement with the queen roll in line with the tail to direct the tail away from the queen roll and towards the next section of the papermaking machine. Guide trays positioned downstream of the doctor blade guide the tail to the next section of the papermaking machine. The doctor blade can be mounted stationary against the queen roll.

  • Patent number: 6001219
Abstract: A water jet edge trimming station for trimming the edges of coated paper during on-machine operation includes backsplash compensating features. The edge trimming station has a cutting station over which the web travels to be cut. The water jet travels along a water jet axis to a point of impingement at the cutting station to cut the web. The cutting station has an effluent receiving aperture at the point of impingement. A negative pressure mixing zone located below the aperture draws effluent by-products or backsplash associated with cutting of the web below the cutting surface of the web. The water jet axis is offset a first predetermined angle chosen relative to a normal axis passing at right angles through the point of impingement to reduce backsplash. The water axis jet is rotated about the normal axis by a second predetermined angle to direct the effluent by-products away from the water jet nozzle and the traveling web.

Abstract: A device for threading a paper web from a dryer section to a finishing device situated after the dryer section in the running direction of the web including a rope threading arrangement. A leader strip is separated from the edge of the paper web in the dryer section and the leader strip is directed between a pair of ropes included in the rope threading arrangement. The leader strip is carried to the finishing device on support of the ropes. To effect the transfer of the leader strip from the drying wire to the rope, at the inlet side of the last drying cylinder in the dryer section, a rope gap is formed out of the ropes and the leader strip, which is supported by the drying wire thereat, is transferred by an air blowing into the rope gap. The leader strip is passed by the ropes over the last drying cylinder to the finishing device.

The laser cutter assembly includes a conduit that the laser beam passes through. The conduit includes a fluid inlet for receiving a fluid extinguishant such as carbon dioxide gas. A heat sink is used to prevent the laser through the conduit when the fluid extinguishant is absent in the conduit. • Patent number: 5762759
Abstract: A papermaking machine uses a low pressure water jet mounted on a pneumatic actuator for movement at least as fast in the cross machine direction as the paper web moves in the machine direction for a distance of 2 to 12 inches. The jet rapidly cuts a tail with a blunt edge of 2 to 12 inches wide from the web. The actuator is mounted on a screw or belt driven carriage to traverse the web and expand the tail after it has been threaded through the dryer section until the tail encompass the entire web and thus completes the threading process. A controller coordinates an air jet positioned beneath a doctor blade and a vacuum suction roll which engages the last press roll. The air jet and vacuum suction roll are actuated when the blunt end of the tail engages the doctor blade. In this way a tail with little or no streamer is formed and blown onto a dryer fabric supported on a vacuum suction roll which leads the tail into a single tier dryer section.
