Abstract: A production zone isolation system includes a sealing mechanism is positioned adjacent to or within the production zone of a well bore such that the expanders are positioned parallel to areas aft and fore of the area which is to be isolated. A refrigerant or cooling agent is pumped into a first inner tubular and exits out of the expanders and into regions of second outer tubular. At pressurized water tilled regions of the well bore that are adjacent to the regions of the second outer tubular, freezing is induced, thereby forming ice plugs and a sealed region therebetween. The refrigerant is not in direct contact with the surrounding water but is instead in juxtaposition to it and separated therefrom by second outer tubular.

  • Patent number: 8800649
Abstract: The annular space around a tubular string has a shape memory material that is in a low profile configuration for run in. After the desired position is obtained and the annulus has cement delivered to fill the annular space, the shape memory device is triggered to revert to an original shape that spans the annulus to seal the tubular and the wellbore sides of the annular space against gas migration through the cement. The structures can have varying run in shapes and can also have original shapes that when the material is triggered will act to displace cement to enhance its compaction on the tubular or the wellbore wall. Combinations of shape memory alloys and polymers are also contemplated to enhance the seal against gas migration.

Abstract: Methods for improving the bonding of a cement sheath to a tubular body in a subterranean well involve anchoring elements mounted on the outside surface of the tubular body—in the annular space between the tubular body and the borehole wall. The cement contains an expansive agent that causes the cement to expand after it sets. The anchoring elements are mounted such that an angle exists between the elements and the tubular-body surface, thereby providing resistance to cement sheath movement away from the tubular-body surface.

  • Patent number: 8783369
Abstract: A technique enables sealing of downhole components by providing a downhole pressure barrier for communication lines. The system comprises a communication line cementing sub that may be coupled into a tubing string. The cementing sub comprises a flow passage, a radially protruding region, a first connector, and a second connector. The first connector is generally disposed on a first longitudinal end of the radially protruding region, and the second connector is disposed on a second longitudinal end of the radially protruding region. Additionally, a passageway extends through the radially protruding region from the first connector to the second connector. The first and second connectors enable routing of a communication line through the radially protruding region.

Abstract: A cementing tool (20) capable of being installed in a casing string (10) and configured to selectively permit the flow of cement through one or more ports (34) in the tool is provided. The ports (34) are normally sealed by rupture disc assemblies (36) comprising a rupture disc (62) that can be opened to permit flow of cement through the casing string central bore (32) and into the annulus (14) defined by the casing string (10) and the downhole formation (16). The cementing tool (20) is particularly useful during cementing operations in which the annulus (14) has become blocked by a collapsed portion of the formation by allowing the obstruction (104) to be bypassed and the flow of cement (100) into the annulus to be continued without substantial interruption. Tool (20) may also be used in multistage cementing operations.
