The present invention combines a base fluid of lesser/greater density than the drilling fluid required at the drill bit to drill the well to produce a combination return mud in the riser. By combining the appropriate quantities of drilling mud with a light fluid, a riser mud density at or near the density of seawater may be achieved to facilitate transporting the return mud to the surface. Alternatively, by injecting the appropriate quantities of heavy fluid into a light return mud, the column of return mud may be sufficiently weighted to protect the wellhead. At the surface, the combination return mud is passed through a treatment system to cleanse the mud of drill cuttings and to separate the drilling fluid from the base fluid.

The separator employs a seal which directs the normally circulating fluid during the cutting or milling operation in through an internal passage in the tool. The cutting-laden fluid passes through a slotted liner where the cuttings drop out and are collected in a compartment within the tool. The circulating fluid exits the tool into the annulus. The tools can be used in series so that the lowermost tool takes out the large cuttings, while an upper tool takes out finer cuttings. Provisions can be made to bypass the tool should it become plugged with cuttings by using rupture discs or movable sleeves responsive to pressure differential. A portion of the body assembly can be magnetic to further assist in removal of cuttings as the circulating flow passes through the tool.

    Abstract: A reverse circulation down-the-hole drill includes an outer wear sleeve (1) and a backhead (2) assembly located at one end of the outer wear sleeve (1) for connecting the drill to a double-walled drill string and to a source of pressure fluid to actuate the drill. A fluid diverter (5) is mounted inside the outer wear sleeve (1) adjacent to the backhead (2). An inner tube (9), concentric with the outer wear sleeve (1) and extending into the fluid diverter (5), defines at least part of a central return passageway in the drill. A bit (10), located by a chuck (3) at the other end of the outer wear sleeve (1), is slidably mounted on the inner tube (9) in an annular chamber (28, 30) defined by the outer wear sleeve, by the inner tube, by the diverter at one end (28), and by the bit at the other end (30).

    Abstract: A drilling column has a percussive drilling head attached to a lower end thereof. The drilling column includes a skirt extending downwardly from a lower end thereof in surrounding relationship to the drilling head. The skirt is disposed in eccentric relationship to the drilling head, so that an enlarged space is formed at one side of the drilling head. An air duct arrangement extends through the drilling column for supplying compressed air to the drilling head. That compressed air exits the drilling head through a front face thereof and then flows upwardly through the enlarged space in the skirt and then travels through a discharge channel arrangement formed in the drilling column. In that way, cuttings entrained in the compressed air are removed upwardly from the drill hole. The drilling column is sealed-off with respect to the upper open end of the drill hole by a chuck pipe, enabling compressed air or liquid to be introduced from above ground into a gap surrounding the drilling column.

    Abstract: A drillstring terminating in a drill bit is run into a borehole. A reduced solid content drilling fluid is pumped through the drillstring and out the bit, wherein the drilling fluid impinges upon and disintegrates formation material in cooperation with the bit. An annulus fluid having a density greater than that of the drilling fluid is continuously pumped into the annulus between the borehole and drillstring, wherein the annulus fluid extends substantially from the surface to the bottom of the drillstring. Drilling fluid and cuttings resulting from disintegration of formation material are returned to the surface through a substantially unobstructed tubular passage in the drillstring. The annulus fluid is maintained under a selected and controlled pressure in the annulus, wherein an interface is formed at the drill bit at which annulus fluid mixes with the drilling fluid and is returned along with the drilling fluid and cuttings and drilling fluid is substantially prevented from entering the annulus.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing drilling mud within entrained cuttings is provided using a pump for forcing fluid into a borehole, such that the fluid mixes with cuttings formed during the formation of the hole. The pipe receives the fluid and entrained cuttings at a first end of the pipe and returns the fluid and entrained cuttings to the surface at the second end of the pipe. At the first end of the pipe, air is injected into the drilling fluid with entrained cuttings to form bubbles therein, thereby increasing the velocity of the fluid and entrained cuttings through the pipe. In one alternative embodiment, a suction is provided at one end of the pipe to increase the speed of fluid and entrained cuttings therethrough. In a third embodiment of the present invention, an Archimedes screw is used to remove the fluid and entrained cuttings from the borehole.

    Abstract: An hydraulic device for forming a cavity in a borehole. The device includes generally the following modular sections: a hub section for connection to a drill pipe; hydromonitor (cutting nozzle); hydroelevator (eductor); and drill bit box. Through each section, except the drill bit box, extends first and second concentric pipelines for delivering fluid into the device and directing slurry out of the device. Only the drill pipe extends to the surface to receive standard well blowout prevention equipment. The second pipeline releases slurry into a casing which channels, in cooperation with an upper portion of the first pipeline and the drill pipe, the slurry to the surface. The hydromonitor includes a nozzle which is hydraulically associated with the first pipeline, and extends through the second pipeline, for delivering fluid into the borehole to form the cavity. The eductor pulls spent cutting fluid, coal fines, etc., out of the cavity as the slurry.

A first chamber is provided between the first floating piston and the fixed seal. The first chamber is filled with lubricant. A second chamber is provided between the fixed seal and the second floating piston. The chamber has a passage to external of the first tubular member.

    Abstract: The drilling system of this invention provides a drill mast mounted on a turntable. The turntable may be mounted on any type of undercarriage or carrier. The drill mast can be positioned around the perimeter of the turntable, it can be positioned near to, or away from, the turntable. The drill mast is carried on a trunnion mounting and can be oriented along Y and Z axis' with respect to the turntable X axis for drilling angle holes. A pipe joint breaker assembly is provided adjacent the lower end of the drilling mast. This assembly can accommodate different size pipe diameters. The drilling systems of this invention is specially adapted to reverse-circulation sample drilling employing a down-the-hole hammer drill. The drilling head configuration provides for simultaneous feeding into a multi-walled drill string of drilling mud, compressed air into the drill string to operate the hammer drill and to feed the hammer drill bit head, and withdrawing of sample-containing return air.
