  • Patent number: 8807217
Abstract: A method for using or removing unused rock debris from a bored passageway through subterranean strata using at least one rock breaking apparatus engaged with a conduit string and placed within the subterranean passageway proximal region, using a member adapted to increase the volume of reduced particle size rock debris generated by increasing the frequency of impact and associated breakage of the rock debris inventory, per revolution of the conduit string and/or per volume of fluid slurry circulated. The used volume of rock debris inventory coats the unlined strata wall of said passageway to inhibit strata fracture initiation or propagation, and the unused rock debris inventory is urged from the passageway at an increased rate by the associated reduction in fluid slurry suspension or velocities needed to urge the rock debris through the unlined strata passageway of improved pressure integrity from inhibiting said initiation or propagation of strata fractures.

  • Publication number: 20140166365
Abstract: Bearing assemblies for downhole tools include a compensator member operatively associated with a slidable member and a bearing member. The slidable member is movable longitudinally relative to the bearing member. Such movement of slidable member occurs when a force acts upwardly on the downhole tool. Thus, the slidable member facilitates absorption of the upward force acting on the downhole tool. During movement of the slidable member, the compensator member is moved from its expanded position to one of its plurality of compressed positions. As a result, the compensator member becomes biased or further biased toward the expanded position. After the upward force dissipates, the compensator member releases some of its stored energy to move from a compressed position toward the expanded position. Longitudinal movement of the slidable member facilitates maintaining engagement of the downhole tool in its working position so that interruptions of operations are minimized.

Abstract: Systems and methods usable for drilling wells and performing other well operations include a drilling tool having inner and outer, counter-rotating drill bits. Opposing reactive torques generated by the inner bit and the outer bit can reduce or cancel the net reactive torque transmitted upwell, through the drill string. Counter rotation of the inner and the outer drill bits can be achieved by a gear system, which transfers torque from a single rotating tubular shaft to a tubular sleeve positioned concentrically about the tubular shaft. The gear system transfers torque from a first gear to a second gear, at a one-to-one rotation/torque ratio, but with an opposite direction of rotation. Tools connected to the tubular sleeve and tubular shaft can thereby be provided with opposing rotational motion.

Abstract: A tool string carrying an external tool, such as a liner hanger, on a release mechanism is lowered into the wellbore. Interlocking lugs and J-slot profile, defined between the exterior surface of the mandrel and interior surface of the release mechanism, allow relative movement of release mechanism and mandrel without releasing the release mechanism. The relative movement allows mechanical operation of a valve or other tool positioned below the release mechanism. Weight-down and rotation of the tool string and mandrel actuates the lower valve assembly by turning a sleeve into alignment with cooperating members of the mandrel. The sleeve, no longer constrained, moves longitudinally in response to a biasing mechanism. Movement of the sleeve allows closure of the valve. After actuation of the valve tool, further weight-down releases the release mechanism from the carried tool.

Each drilling stem section includes an inner stem section (111) and a hollow outer stem section (112). The inner stem section is rotatably fixed in the outer stem section. The inner stem sections are connected together to form inner stem (11?) of the drilling stem, and the outer stem sections are connected together to form outer stem (12?) of the drilling stem. The inner stem is connected with an output shaft of a power machine, and the outer stem is fixedly connected with the shell of the power machine. The length of the drilling stem of the assembled drilling tool can be arbitrarily adjusted, and the drilling bit can be rotated with high speed without friction generated between the drilling stem and the hole wall, thereby improving the speed and the efficiency of hole drilling.

Abstract: Aspects of the inventions generally provide a method and apparatus for coupling a communication sub to a wired drill pipe. In one aspect, a surface of a coupler head is non threaded and configured to provide a retaining force. In another aspect, a coupler head is coupled to a body, and a support mechanism is coupled to the body and configured to secure the coupler head within a receiving end of the wired drill pipe. In another aspect, a method of placing a communication sub involves inserting the communication sub into the receiving end of the wired drill pipe, adjusting the position of the communication sub until an indication of signal communication between the communication sub and the wired drill pipe is observed, and after the indication of signal communication is observed, retaining the communication sub within the receiving end until removal of the communication sub is desired.

Abstract: In one embodiment, the present invention provides a reverse circulation drilling apparatus which comprises a concentric dual wall drill pipe, having a first threaded end, a second threaded end, an outer pipe and an inner pipe captured in a concentric arrangement within the outer pipe and defining an annulus therebetween. The inner pipe defines an inside passage, which is not in fluid communication with the annulus. A first means for directing an outer flow of fluid through the annulus is provide. A second means for directing an inner flow of fluid through the inside passage is also provided. The first means and the second means prevent fluid communication between the outer flow and the inner flow. The first threaded end and the second threaded end are each suitable to connect the reverse circulation drilling apparatus to another reverse circulation drilling apparatus.
