    Abstract: A braking system for controlling the rotational motion of one or more rotatable members such as vehicle wheels wherein an annular base member is stationarily mounted with respect to a concentric rotatable axle and a cup shaped drum is concentrically mounted on the axle for rotation therewith and enclosing the brake mechanism. A plurality of slots are formed on a portion of the base member and on the inner edge of the drum. A centrally positioned, split, annular, metallic disc has peripheral fingers directed radially outward to engage the slots on the drum and annular friction members are positioned on either side of this central disc. Each of the friction members has radially inwardly directed fingers for engagement with the slots on the base. The friction members, therefore, are held relatively stationary and the central disc rotates with the axle.

    Abstract: A disk brake assemblage providing an improved arrangement whereby the brake pads and supports therefore may be changed with a minimum amount of disassembly of the disk brake assemblage. The brake assemblage is provided with an annular cylinder and an annular piston operable therein and comprising a brake cylinder device operably disposed between a pair of backing plates and brake pads which are adapted to frictionally engage respective brake disks or rotors. Both the cylinder and the piston are provided with axially projecting lugs or members normally engaging correspondingly formed recesses on the brake pad backing plates for retaining the brake pads and plates in the operable position. By axially squeezing or displacing the cylinder and piston toward each other, the lugs are displaced out of the recesses to permit the brake pads and backing plates to be removed and replaced.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a spring-engaged, pressure fluid-disengaged, parking brake of the disc type which includes an annular piston movable towards and away from the brake discs for engaging and disengaging the brake. The brake housing includes an aperture coaxial with the brake shaft and the piston carries a tapped bore in alignment with the aperture in the housing. A bolt may be threaded into the bore through the aperture and rotated to draw the piston towards the aperture to disengage the brake in the absence of pressure fluid.

    Abstract: A housing assembly for a wedge type disc brake in which the wedge actuator is housed in a radially disposed aluminum housing member which is clamped between the inboard end of a ferrous caliper housing member and a ferrous end plate by axial bolts passing through the end plate and the aluminum housing member for threaded engagement with bores in the inboard end of the caliper housing. The inboard face of the aluminum housing member has an opening opposite the wedge actuator which is closed by the end plate so that the inboard rollers of the roller bearing assembly interconnecting the wedge actuator and the push rod bear directly on the outboard face of the end plate. The braking force generated at the interface of the wedge actuator and the push rod is thus transferred to the end plate and absorbed by tensioning of the bolts, thereby relieving the aluminum housing of any significant tensile loading.

    Abstract: A fully lined disk brake adapted for use to advantage with a wheel of a light-weight passenger car has a radially outwardly open brake housing secured to a hub of the wheel by circumferentially spaced radial arms. The brake housing has a radially inward wall provided with spaced openings which communicate with openings between the radial arms which support the housing. A stepped ring responsive to fluid under pressure is disposed between the brake disks in the brake housing for actuation of the brakes. The stepped rings which form the brake actuating member are provided with axial projections having spaces therebetween which contact the brake shoes. Air for ventilating the brakes is drawn through the openings between the arms and in the inner wall of the housing and passes between the projection members on the stepped rings to ventilate the brake disk.

    Abstract: A fluid disengaged and spring urged brake including a hub having a friction ring mounted thereon with a spring housing in which the hub is rotatably mounted. The spring housing has formed therein a multiplicity of cavities in each of which is mounted a coil spring. A friction facing mounting plate with friction facing thereon is secured to torque pins extended freely through holes slidably mounted on a piston secured to the spring housing. The friction facing mounting plate has a hole extending radially therethrough and the friction facing has grooves formed in the face thereof whereby air pressure supplied through from the hole of the mounting plate passes from the same through the grooves of the friction facing to thereby cool the friction interfaces of the engaging surfaces of the friction ring and the friction facing of the mounting plate.

    Abstract: A hydraulically actuated fully lined disc brake assembly for braking a wheel of a motor vehicle has a brake housing which is provided with a gap which is open on its radially exterior side. Brake discs which fully line the brake housing are disposed in the gap and are supported on a removable bracket which is fixed against rotation. The brake discs are fixed against rotation with the wheel but are free to move axially. A hydraulic actuating mechanism is disposed in the gap between the brake discs and is designed to apply pressure against the discs at their radial center point to actuate the brake discs at their most efficient radii. The brake housing is supported on the wheel and can be removed for replacement of the brake discs after the wheel has been removed without disassembly of the brake actuating mechanism.

    Abstract: A fully-lined disk brake assembly has two disk brake disks disposed in an annular channel of a brake housing. The brake housing rotates with the wheel and a pair of axial movable annular brake disks fixed against rotation with the wheel are disposed in the channel. A fluid actuated ring cylinder and piston assembly, stepped ring cylinders or similar brake actuation mechanism is disposed in the channel between the brake disks. The brake housing is assembled from two separable annular members which are fastened together by screws or a snap-ring. The wheel side member of the brake housing is adapted to receive the wheel bolt for securing the brake housing to a flange on the hub or axle shaft of the wheel assembly.
