  • Patent number: 4640396
Abstract: A wheeled vehicle has an internal combustion engine provided with an air intake having a throttle valve. A change speed transmission drives certain of the wheels and receives power from a fluid torque converter having an impeller driven by the engine and a turbine connected to drive the change speed transmission. A clutch establishes a direct drive between the impeller and the turbine under certain operating conditions of the vehicle and the clutch operation is controlled by an hydraulic circuit. Valves and controls are provided in the hydraulic circuit and responsive to the vehicle speed to allow slipping of the clutch at low speeds and direct drive coupling of the clutch at high vehicle speeds. The clutch is further controlled by the throttle opening to limit the direct drive coupling under high vehicle speeds and large throttle openings. In one form the clutch is also controlled by a fluid by-pass mechanism to allow slipping of the clutch during low torque transmitting conditions.

  • Patent number: 4632232
Abstract: The single lever control for operating the clutch and throttle of a marine motor has a support on which a sleeve is mounted on a pivot. A rod is mounted in the sleeve for axial movement. The distal end of the rod is actuated to move the rod and the sleeve about the pivot and also to move the rod axially relative to said sleeve. An actuating arm and a cam track cooperate to move the rod and sleeve in an arc about the pivot between first and second positions between which the clutch is operated by an operator actuated by rotation of the arm about its pivot. The actuating arm moves the rod axially relative to said sleeve when the arm is beyond the clutch operating range. The rod is connected to the throttle. A friction device acts on the rod to resist axial movement of the rod relative to the sleeve. The friction load resists change of the throttle setting but has no affect on clutch operation.

Abstract: System is provided for controlling the pressure with which a clutch is engaged, with the throttle opening and the rotational speed of a driven shaft of the clutch. A microprocessor reads a throttle opening and the rotational speed of the driven shaft of the clutch at a time interval of 0.4 sec, and accesses a particular group of controlling data which control the clutch engagement and which are grouped together as a function of a time lapse l as well as the read values of these parameters. During the interval of 0.4 sec, the microprocessor sequentially outputs the controlling data of the particular group with a time subinterval of 0.05 sec. The system detects a difference between the last data of a preceding particular group and the first data of a subsequent particular group at the renewal of the data group and then corrects subsequent data for controlling clutch control pressure so as to smooth the change of the clutch control pressure.

  • Patent number: 4470492
Abstract: A control assembly particularly for use in marine controls where a single lever thereof actuates a clutch and throttle of a marine power unit. The assembly has a first input shaft rotatable relative to a body thereof, and an extensible and retractable first output structure for controlling a function, e.g. the throttle. The assembly includes a cam mounted on the first input shaft for rotation therewith and a cam follower cooperating with the cam and the first output structure. A lever means cooperates with the body and cam follower so that the first output structure is actuated in an amount dependent on direction and rotation of the input shaft from an initial position thereof. In a preferred embodiment, a second output structure for the clutch is responsive to primary rotation of the input shaft from the initial position thereof and is unresponsive to secondary rotation, and the first output structure is unresponsive to primary rotation of the shaft and is responsive to secondary rotation thereof.

Abstract: A system for a four-wheel drive vehicle for automatically changing a power transmission system of the engine of the vehicle from four-wheel driving system to two-wheel driving system in accordance with the steering angle during the turning of a corner. The transmission system is provided for transmitting a power from the engine to main driving two-wheel, and a fluid pressure controlled friction clutch is provided for transmitting the power of the engine to two wheels other than the main driving two-wheel. A steering angle sensor is provided for producing a steering angle signal dependent on the steering angle. A control system is provided to respond to the steering angle signal for decreasing the pressure of the pressure oil applied to the clutch thereby to cause the slip of the clutch during the turning of the corner.

  • Patent number: 4466525
Abstract: A control system for a marine drive is shown which controls the inflation of ahead and astern clutches and an engine speed governor. Upon actuation of a throttle lever controlling a throttle valve, a selector valve is first actuated to operatively connect one or the other of the clutches to the control. Further movement of the throttle lever causes a relay valve to supply air at a pressure proportional to the throttle position to a main control valve which passes such air pressure to the selected clutch until a first control pressure is reached. Thereafter, air from the supply is supplied at a programmed rate to the selected clutch to continue inflation of the clutch until a second clutch pressure is reached whereupon a boost valve is actuated to connect full supply air pressure to the selected clutch.

  • Patent number: 4450946
Abstract: The present invention relates to a speed control and indication system for a mechanical press. In order to enable the press to operate at its full running speed on the first cycle thereof after actuation of the clutch, the flywheel is driven at a speed higher than the set running speed so that as the mechanical inertia of the drive mechanism will cause the press to slow down to its set running speed. The control circuit modifies the speed control voltage after actuation of the clutch so that the press continues to run at the set speed even after the mechanical inertia is overcome. The signal from the tachometer to the speed meter is modified before actuation of the clutch so that it provides a reading at the set running speed of the press even though the flywheel is running at a higher speed. After the clutch is actuated, the true tachometer voltage is fed to the speed meter so that it continues to indicate the true running speed of the press.
