  • Patent number: 7943031
Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing the liquid content of a particulate/liquid dispersion, such as a sewage sludge or mine tailings, are described. The apparatus comprises containment means to contain the material, and means to apply pressure to the contained material therein, the containment means being partly defined by a first filtration membrane permeable to the liquid but impermeable to at least some and more preferably substantially all of the solids contained within the material, in particular configured as a continuous belt press. The filtration membrane comprises a textile or other synthetic material in intimate association with a conducting element so as to constitute where so associated a first electrode. A second sheet material, preferably also a filtration membrane, is similarly associated with a conducting element so as to constitute a second electrode to allow application of a potential difference across the material and drive the dewatering process electrokinetically.

  • Patent number: 7686933
Abstract: An apparatus for electrophoretically removing contaminants from an oil-based drilling fluid includes a housing, a drum, a means for rotating the drum, and a scraper head. The drum is retained within the housing above the housing floor. The oil-based drilling fluid is directed along the housing floor, contacting both the housing floor and the drum. A negative charge is applied to the drum and a positive charge is applied to the housing, creating an electrical field through the fluid. Drilling fluid contaminants are attracted to and collect upon the drum outer surface. The means for rotating the drum turns the drum through the fluid and collected contaminants remain on the drum outer surface. The scraper removes the collected contaminants from the drum outer surface as it rotates.

  • Patent number: 7578918
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for treating sludge comprising electrodes including at least one anode and at least one cathode. The electrodes define therebetween a space adapted to receive the sludge so as to submit the sludge disposed within the space to an electric current, thereby dehydrating the sludge and generating an effluent. The apparatus also comprises an inlet for receiving the sludge and an outlet for evacuating the treated sludge. The inlet and the outlet are in communication with the space. The apparatus also comprises compression means for compacting the sludge so as to permit a contact substantially constant between the electrodes and the sludge when the sludge is submitted to the electric current and rotated around a rotation axis. The invention also relates to a process for treating sludge. The invention is useful for treating various types of sludge in order to dehydrate and decontaminate the sludge.

  • Patent number: 7112267
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the spatial distribution of a filler component within the matrix of a composite material. An electric field is applied to a mixture consisting of two or more components that have different dielectric permittivities, at least one of which is initially in the form of a liquid polymer or pre-polymer. An alternating electric field is established between a pair of electrical conductors or electrodes that are moved relative to each other, so as to alter the spatial intensity of the electric field in a controlled manner. Polarized particles or elements of the filler component that are coupled to a moving electrode by a dielectrophoretic force can consequently be dragged into a predetermined spatial configuration. As the size of the inter-electrode gap is changed, the applied voltage can be adjusted in order to maintain electrically induced polarization of the filler component.
