Abstract: Method and apparatus for separation of solid particles in liquid suspension by non-continuous filter unclogging aided filtration. The said method uses vacuum as suspension flowing force, which is applied under a closed circuit. The said separation is based on filtration vessels, using filtration fabrics of known mesh, and uses a reverse direction of suspension flow and air suction through the filters to avoid clogging of the filter fabrics. The separated particles can be recovered and collected from any of the filters for subsequent use or simply discarded. In a particular form of the invention, the said apparatus is used to separate fungus spores from solid medium in suspension. The said apparatus is constituted by a support structure and comprises three interconnected systems: the filtration system, the vacuum system and the control system. The said filtration system comprises column reservoirs (2, 4, 24, 22), suspension transport tubes (25) and filters (3 and 23).

Abstract: An in-line water monitoring system for the detection of the accidental or intentional introduction of potentially harmful substances. The automated system comprises a water pressure driven concentration unit that filters drinking water through a hollow-fiber filter. Material collected on the filter is backflushed into a collection vessel by passing a sterile solution through the filter in the reverse direction. An electronic signal at the end of the backflush sequence triggers a sensor such as an array biosensor to begin processing and analyzing the sample. The array biosensor houses a slide prepared with antibodies to the test organism. The array biosensor is programmed to automatically run sample and detection reagents over the slide, analyze the resulting pattern for positive and negative data, and report the results.

Abstract: A filter system includes a set of modules, each module including screen assemblies and filter media sandwiched between the screen assemblies. A plurality of control assemblies are associated with each of the modules. Each of the control assemblies is in fluid communication with a corresponding module to control flow through the corresponding module. The control assemblies selectively control fluid in each of the modules between at least one of a forward flow through the screen assemblies to treat an influent flow, a bypass flow to bypass at least one of the modules, and a reverse flow to backwash a given filter media. A method of filtering influent includes providing an influent flow to a set of modules, each module including screen assemblies and filter media sandwiched between the screen assemblies. The influent is filtered by directing the influent through the set of modules. A given module is bypassed when the given module becomes occluded.

  • Patent number: 7381323
Abstract: A filtration apparatus is provided which is easy to maintain, manage and which enables preservation of filtration characteristics due to the fact that filtration is carried out by use of a gelatinous filter apparatus. In the filtration apparatus, filtration characteristics can be maintained by providing a bubble supplying mechanism for removing a sedimentary layer comprising removables that is formed on a surface of a filtration film and a filtration characteristics restoring mechanism for restoring the filter film clogged by the removables by causing a back-flow of filtered water accumulated in a cistern. Filtration apparatus maintenance and management are facilitated by improving recovery efficiency of the precipitated removables by tapering a lower part inside a raw water tank and providing a recovery tank for recovering removables via a valve.

Abstract: A water or liquid substance filtration device is disclosed which removes microorganisms and organic contamination and sterilizes the containers and water lines after the unit. The unit is portable, or can be mounted stationary. The unit has a five-stage filtration and sterilization system controlled by an independent onboard computer system that can link to a central computer system to keep track of all independent units. The unit will physically filter out of the water contaminants that can be reused, destroyed, or flushed down a safe drain. It can also be modified to filter for a certain size of particulate, making recovery of certain substances possible. The unit has a self-diagnostic system that can determine if the unit is operating properly and can shut down a part thereof if one of the capillary units fails. The system is hydrophilic, can run at low pressures and can be designed from low to extremely high volumes. The unit uses ozone to disinfect containers and water lines.

After the cleaning procedure of the filter, the filter pores contain a fluid. The system is pressurized, and a decay in pressure over a predetermined time period is measured. Abstract: A self cleaning filtration device wherein an activation piston, laterally supported within an activation cylinder is immersed in filtrate within the confines of an immersion chamber. The immersion chamber receives filtrate from a disk filtration stack via orifices and sparger support tubes (the “Tubes”). Gas pressure (i) drives the piston, the Tubes, and the disk compression block upward and (ii) forces the immersion chamber fluid through the Tubes to separate the disks. The Tubes contain gas entrainment orifices on the side of the piston that are configured to facilitate entrainment of gas into the fluid. The entrained fluid impacts the opened disks with a high energy dispersed scouring action, to flush the disks clean.

  • Patent number: 7276171
Abstract: When an out-of-basin type separation membrane, which is connected to a biological treatment tank through a circulation passageway for filtering tank water, is cleaned, a part or all of the backwash drainage containing the sludge peeled from the membrane surface is returned to the biological treatment tank through a backwash drain passageway or circulation passageway to maintain MLSS of the biological treatment tank constant. In the case of chemical cleaning, the sludge is peeled from the membrane surface by backwash with water, and the sludge is discharged out of the membrane module through a sludge line and then followed by chemical cleaning. Thus the need for using a large amount of a chemical solution is eliminated and the peeled sludge containing the chemical solution can be discharged out of the system as well, thereby preventing the microorganism from being damaged by the chemical solution.

  • Patent number: 7270745
Abstract: Presented is a liquid filtering apparatus and method that overcomes the disadvantages encountered with prior bed filtration systems by providing a filtering apparatus that incorporates a super-buoyant filter medium having a specific gravity very substantially lower than that of the process liquid being filtered. This feature enables a majority of the medium to float on top of the process liquid. Due to the significant differences in specific gravity between the media and the process liquid, super-buoyant media produce a highly advantageous means of naturally, gravimetrically separating both clean and contaminated filter media and process liquid into separate “phases”. Under normal filtering operation, the filter media is contained within a filter housing by a bed support near the top of the filter housing, and particulate material is filtered from a process liquid that passes through the housing.
