Patent number: 7699992Abstract: During a dialysis treatment carried out by a dialysis apparatus, in which a dialysis liquid is circulated to a clean dialysate filter (43) arranged before a dialyser (3), the conductivity of the dialysis liquid is altered according to an altering function that is a function of a mathematical model of the filter (43), in a way that will make the conductivity after the filter change more quickly. A conductivity cell (47), which is arranged after the dialyser, measures the conductivity of the spent dialysis liquid changed in response to said alteration. A control and computer system (52) evaluates the dialysance from said measured response. The conductivity can be changed for a comparatively short time period that is sufficient to allow reliable results.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2004Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: Gambro Lundia ABInventor: Jan Peter Sternby

Publication number: 20100000943Abstract: Methods and apparatus for desolvating flowing liquid streams while retaining temporal resolution of dissolved substrates are disclosed. A novel small-scale self-regulating spray dryer preserves temporal resolution while desolvating a liquid chromatography eluent stream and depositing the solute onto an optical surface for infrared spectrographic analysis. The liquid eluent is pumped through a heated nebulizer to create a high-speed jet of solute containing liquid and solvent vapor. This jet is directed circumferentially inside a hot cylindrical cavity. Centrifugal force causes the larger liquid droplets to travel along the outer diameter of the cavity. The cavity surface is heated to cause the droplets to film boil. Film boiling reduces droplet contact with the cavity surface thereby retaining the solute in the droplets. The solute temperature is limited by controlling the pressure into which the solvent evaporates from the droplets.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 8, 2007Publication date: January 7, 2010Inventors: William W. Patent number: 6616843Abstract: A single tank submerged membrane bioreactor for treating feed water having unacceptable levels of ammonia or total nitrogen has both a membrane scouring bubble supply and an oxygenating bubble supply. The membrane scouring bubble supply continuously provides large scouring bubbles to clean the membranes. Permeate is continuously withdrawn from the membranes at a high rate but the large scouring bubbles do not transfer sufficient oxygen to the mixed liquor to create aerobic conditions in the reactor. The oxygenating bubble supply is operated to provide small bubbles of air or oxygen that intermittently produce aerobic conditions in a significant part of the mixed liquor. Alternating aerobic and anoxic conditions occur in a significant portion of the tank suitable for nitrification and denitrification.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignees: Omnium de Traitement et de Valorisation, Zenon Environmental Inc.Inventors: Henry Behmann, Hidayat Husain, Herve Buisson, Michele Payraudeau

Patent number: 6607697Abstract: A method of supplying ready-to-use dialysis fluid in a machine for extracorporeal blood treatment, is described, said machine having, in addition to a dialyzer, at least one sterile filter divided by a microbe-retaining membrane into a first and second chamber. The temperature and/or conductivity of the dialysis fluid flowing through the sterile filter is monitored. To prevent dialysis fluid whose temperature and/or conductivity does not correspond to a preset temperature and/or conductivity value from flowing out of the second chamber of the sterile filter into the dialyzer after rinsing off the membrane of the sterile filter, the dialysis fluid flowing out of the sterile filter is first removed into the drain through a bypass line until the proper values are established. Only then is the dialyzer connected to the dialysis fluid path. In addition, the invention relates to a machine for extracorporeal blood treatment with a device for supplying ready-to-use dialysis fluid.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1999Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: Fresenius Medical Care Deutschland GmbHInventor: Carsten Müller

Publication number: 20030141246Abstract: The resist stripping waste liquid regenerating apparatus of the invention regenerates a resist stripping waste liquid to obtain a resist stripping regenerated liquid. The apparatus is provided with a membrane separating apparatus which employs a membrane with a molecular weight cutoff of 100-1500 to separate a resist stripping waste liquid into a concentrated liquid and a permeating liquid, an adjusting tank which stores the permeating liquid and adjusts the concentration of an alkanolamine and organic solvent, means for supplying the alkanolamine to the adjusting tank, and means for supplying the organic solvent to the adjusting tank. This construction adequately reduces the resist concentration of the permeating liquid since the resist in the resist stripping waste liquid cannot permeate the membrane. It is thereby possible to lessen the need for dilution of the resist concentration and thus satisfactorily reduce the amount of alkanolamine and organic solvent supplied to the adjusting tank.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 27, 2002Publication date: July 31, 2003Inventors: Shu Ogawa, Yasuyuki Kobayakawa, Yoshiya Kitagawa, Makoto Kikukawa, Takayuki Kaneyasu

Publication number: 20030094406Abstract: A process is provided to produce water that will meet the specifications of the United States Pharmacopeia Inc. for Purified Water and Water for Injection, and water for dialysis as circumscribed by the American Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). The system has no storage tanks where stagnant water will be fouled by biofilm colonizing the tank surface. Water is circulated throughout the purification system and drawn as required, on demand. The water is purified and used immediately or recycled and repurified to ensure quality. Sanitation of the purification system, maintaining microbiological purity and cleaning is done by controlling the pH so that it is normally acidic by maintaining a high carbon dioxide concentration in solution, the carbon dioxide being allowed to pass into the permeate from a reverse osmosis membrane assembly used to purify the water.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2002Publication date: May 22, 2003Inventor: Steven D. Patent number: 6541272Abstract: An apparatus and method for separating and analyzing a component of a fluid sample that is considered to be a contaminant, and particularly, that is or may be an organic material. The invention is predicated on the introduction of the sample fluid in a pulsed manner via a first carrier fluid into a feed chamber. A membrane is located between the feed chamber and an exit chamber, and in fluid registry therewith. When the sample enters the feed chamber, the component to be separated and analyzed can permeate the membrane, and thus passes through the membrane to the exit chamber, and then enters a second carrier fluid which carries it to a detector for analysis. The detector may be a gas chromatograph (GC), mass spectrometer (MS) or the like.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1998Date of Patent: April 1, 2003Assignee: New Jersey Institute of TechnologyInventor: Somenath Mitra
