  • Patent number: 7923668
Abstract: An engine nacelle inlet lip includes both acoustic treatment and electric heating for ice protection. The inlet lip has a composite outer skin and a composite inner skin, with the composite outer skin having at least one integrated heater element embedded in the composite material. An acoustic cellular core positioned between the outer and inner skin acts to attenuate fan noise from the engine. Covering the outer skin and overlying the acoustic core is a perforated erosion shield having a first set of openings that pass entirely thorough its thickness. The composite outer skin includes a second set of openings such that sound waves can pass from an inner barrel portion of the inlet lip through the erosion shield, outer skin, and heater element to the underlying acoustic cellular core.

Abstract: Electrically heated pumps are disclosed that include electric heating elements that are linked to a process controller. The disclosed pump designs can be applied to packed seal, lip seal, mechanical seal and magnetic drive pumps. For packed, lip and mechanical seal pumps, the external jacketing on the pump, including the head, casing, pressure relief valve and bracket, can be replaced with electric heating elements, such as flexible or custom form membranes, attached to the pump through the use of adhesive or mechanical fastening devices. For the magnetic drive pump, the external jacketing on the pump head, pressure relief valve and casing can be replaced with electric heating elements attached to the pump through the use of adhesive or mechanical fastening devices. For the bracket portion of the magnetic drive pump, the external jacketing can be removed and the heating element is attached to the canister that contains the liquid and that is located between the inner and outer magnetic drive assemblies.

Abstract: A carbon fiber heating source includes a bundle of carbon fibers combined with glass fibers. The bundle is surrounded with a silicone coating layer and has high tensile strength responsive to bending and tension while emitting heat at high temperature. The carbon fiber heat emitting source includes heat emitting fibers formed by combining carbon fibers with glass fibers. Connection terminals are formed at both ends of the heat emitting fibers so that electricity can be applied thereto. A coating member coats the surfaces of the heat emitting fibers and the connection terminals. The coating member may be a silicone coating layer formed on the heat emitting fibers and the connection terminals. The coating member may be a quartz pipe that is filled with LPG and hydrogen and receives and seals the heat emitting fibers such that only a portion of the connection terminals is exposed from the both ends.

Abstract: The helix heated hoses 10 and 12 use two features to increase the flexibility. The first feature is a braided-copper heating element 14, which has increased flexibility over the prior art solid copper heating element. The element is spiral wound around the hose and held in place with a moisture barrier 16. The second feature is the helix twist 18 located just before the point where the hoses 10 and 12 attach to the manifold 20. The helix feature is created with the helix support 22, which initiates the twist around 24 inches back from the point of termination. The helix feature works to reduce the moment of inertia about the neutral axis 26 of the two supply hoses 10 and 12.
