Having Enclosure Or Cover Means Patents (Class 224/328)
  • Patent number: 5538169
Abstract: A collapsible, cargo carrier designed to be attached to the rack on the roof or truck lid on a vehicle. The carrier includes an enclosure made of durable, water-proof, coated vinyl material with a closeable inner lid. An outer lid is disposed over the inner lid and the enclosure to provide two wind and water-proof barriers over the cargo. The outer lid is attached along one edge to the front panel of the enclosure via a flexible, water-proof hinge also made of coated vinyl material. The enclosure and inner and outer lids are made of coated vinyl material which enables them to be sewn or heat welded together during manufacturing. A plurality of adjustable anchor straps are disposed longitudinally over the cargo carrier which are used to selectively attach it to the rack. A plurality of compression straps are disposed transversely over the cargo carrier which are used to adjust the shape of the carrier to the shape of the cargo items carried therein and to make the cargo carrier more aerodynamic.

  • Patent number: 5513891
Abstract: A midship-type vehicle, with an engine mounted in a rear portion of a vehicle body, includes an openable and closable maintenance lid covering an upper portion of an engine room, and an openable and closable rear glass gate covering an upper portion of the maintenance lid. The maintenance lid includes a lower lid body and an upper cover, both of which are pivotally supported by a common pivot. A removable roof accommodating space is defined between the lid body and the cover. After opening the rear glass gate, only the cover is opened to conduct the removal and accommodation of the roof, or the lid body and the cover are opened simultaneously to conduct maintenance on the engine. Thus, it is possible to accommodate the roof, which has been removed from the vehicle body, without sacrificing any volume in a trunk or a passenger compartment.

  • Patent number: 5423588
Abstract: A load cover for use in association with a vehicle roof-rack or other load-carrying area has a housing in which is located a spring-loaded roller, a substantially inextensible web being wound on the roller and having a bar attached to the free end of the web. Folds are formed along the length of the web, to provide a central region, two outer wings extending along the edge regions of the web, and folded-back intermediate zones, the wings being connected together by elastic strips. Once the web has been pulled out of the housing to extend over a carried load, the bar is made fast, and then the wings are pulled down to cover the sides of the load and are tied in place. After use, and on releasing the web, it returns into the housing, by being wound on the roller, until required for use again.

  • Patent number: 4406387
Abstract: An enclosed article carrier for mounting to an exterior surface of a motor vehicle. The article carrier has a pair of open hollow shells. One of the shells is fastened by a removable fastener to the surface of the motor vehicle. The removable fastener preferably is a quick-release fastener requiring simultaneous application of a rotational force and a force normal to the axis of application of the rotational force for engagement and disengagement. The second of the shells is preferably hinged to the first shell and swings over the lower shell to form an enclosed storage compartment. The second shell may be disengaged from the first shell, rotated one hundred and eighty degrees, and nested within the first shell to form an open article carrier.

  • Patent number: 4378898
Abstract: A cargo carrier system including a tray-shaped base and an inverted tray-shaped removable cover. Means are provided for mounting the base to the roof of a vehicle and for attaching the cover to the base. The cover and the base have continuous flanges extending outwardly in a horizontal direction with continuous resilient sealing means between the flanges for preventing the entry of dust or water into the space between the cover and the base. Resilient sealing means are also provided around the peripheral bottom of the base for a secure and protective mounting and to prevent the entry of air into the space between the bottom of the base and the roof of the vehicle for improved aerodynamics and noise reduction. In a preferred embodiment, the cargo carrier includes means for attaching the inverted cover to a utility trailer thereby allowing the cover to be towed behind a vehicle as a cargo carrier. In addition, either the cover or the base can be used separately on a vehicle roof.
