  • Patent number: 4982907
Abstract: A document shredder comprises a pair of cutter assemblies, each having a shaft on which there are cutter disks with interspersed spacers. The disks overlap to form a nip. On the one shaft, additionally, there are rings mounted in the spacers, and that permits the shaft to be axially compressed tighter than the shaft without rings. This provides for relative flexibility and axial movement between the shafts such that foreign objects can more easily be removed. A 20 inch cutter assembly driven by a single phase motor through a planetary gear system is provided.

  • Patent number: 4759508
Abstract: An apparatus for crushing small containers, such as vials, containing a scintillation liquid. The apparatus includes a closed housing having a feed opening in the upper end which communicates with a hopper. The lower end of the hopper registers with a pair of cooperating crusher rolls, and the vials fed into the hopper flow downwardly through the rolls which crush or rupture the vials to permit the liquid to be expelled. After crushing, the vials and the liquid pass through a chute and are discharged into an end of a closed vibratory conveyor unit that includes at least one vibrating screen. The liquid passes through the screen and is collected in a container while the crushed vials are conveyed along the screen and are discharged into a collection drum. The apparatus includes a loading basket that is pivoted to a carriage which is slidable on tracks mounted on the outer surface of the housing beneath the inlet opening.

  • Patent number: 4545541
Abstract: A multiple-roll roller mill, useful in particular for livestock feed processing, is disclosed. The mill includes a main roller and at least two secondary rollers, each secondary roller opposing a different axial portion of the main roller circumference and thereby defining axially separate mill sections. Each secondary roller is independently adjustable towards and away from the main roller. A chain and sprocket arrangement gangs the adjustment means for opposite ends of each secondary roller to ensure that the rollers remain parallel when adjusted. Pressure springs urge the secondary rollers toward their adjusted positions, but allow movement away from the main roller when the spring pressure is overcome. A chain drive is employed which includes moveable idler sprockets arranged so as to maintain relatively constant chain tension when the roller positions are adjusted.

  • Patent number: 4485977
Abstract: An improved roller mill construction. Material to be milled or ground such is fed through a discharge opening in a hopper to a pair of cooperating rolls that are mounted within a housing. The discharge opening is enclosed by a sliding gate which is biased to the closed position and can be opened by manual operation of a pull rod. An adjustable setting mechanism is incorporated with the pull rod and enables the gate to be held at an infinite number of open positions. To adjust the spacing between the rolls, the shaft of one of the rolls is journalled within bearing assemblies that are mounted for sliding movement with respect to the housing. A rod is secured to each slidable bearing assembly and is threadedly connected to a shaft which carries a sprocket. By driving the sprockets in unison, the shafts will be rotated to thereby move the bearing assemblies and adjust the spacing between the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4432275
Abstract: A nut blanching arrangement in which nuts to be blanched are passed between first and second spaced, counter-rotating rollers. Each roller is provided with a plurality of hollow elastic tubular rings extending around its outer circumference. The tubular rings on the first roller are longitudinally aligned with respect to the tubular rings on the second roller such that each four adjacent tubular rings, two on each roller, form an opening through which the nuts pass during the blanching operation. In this arrangement, the nuts passing between the counter-rotating rollers are forced between the grooves of adjacent tubular rings such that the rings encapsulate and compress the nuts as they pass therebetween. The counter-rotating rollers are rotated at slightly different speeds such that during the blanching operation, the slight differential in the roller speeds causes the outer skin of the peanut to peel away from the nut meat.

  • Patent number: 4346850
Abstract: A shredding machine of the general type employed for comminuting difficult to shred material incorporates a torque cushioning device for the purpose of minimizing breakage of the comminuting teeth or knives of the apparatus when the teeth encounter metal or other objects which impose a torque overload on the rotating teeth. The drive motor is coupled to the shafts carrying the comminuting teeth by means of a drive transmission assembly such as a speed reducer box. The transmission assembly is shaft mounted upon the input shaft to the comminuter so that the casing of the transmission assembly can rotate relative to the fixed frame of the machine about the axis of its supporting shaft. An arm fixedly mounted upon the casing is biased by springs mounted upon the machine frame.

  • Patent number: 4022073
Abstract: In a beam-backed cluster-type strip mill each roll is driven separately from a vertical motor placed on top of the housing through a floating right-angle gearbox. The gearbox is keyed onto one end of each roll and is so suspended that only pure torque is transmitted to the roll and the reactions as well as the weight of the box are absorbed by the suspension means.Roll oscillating mechanism, forcing the rolls to travel axially back and forth far enough to efface marks left by the backing casters, is incorporated in the gearbox. This drive possesses substantial advantages over conventional drives, which make the mill more accessible, and save space. Moreover it makes possible various roll configurations by adding supplementary rolls to the cluster pattern thereby increasing the range and scope of the mill.
