Abstract: The invention pertains to a method for comminuting a polymeric shaped article to particles having an average particle size smaller than 6 mm by using a grinding apparatus, characterized in that the shaped article prior to grinding is subjected to a milling step in a milling apparatus to substantially fully convert the shaped article into chips, after which the chips are fed into the grinding apparatus for further comminuting giving at least 25 wt. % less particles having a size less than 1 mm than obtained by the grinding step only.

  • Patent number: 7461799
Abstract: This invention relates to industrial production of fine dispersed powders, where the material to be pulverized is mixed with high-pressure working into a gas-solids suspension, which through acceleration nozzles (8) is conveyed to the pulverizing chamber of counterjet pulverizer (9) for autogenous pulverization. The method is known in that the pulverized gas solids suspension is conveyed in the pulverizing circle at least to one intermediate tank (12), where the gas is removed from the blend and solids are collected into intermediate tank (12), which are returned together with new raw material for pulverization till in the equipment a wanted circulation load is achieved, whereafter the process continues so that from it as much ready product is removed as new material is added to it.

Abstract: Fine particulate polymer drag reducing agent (DRA) in bi-modal or multi-modal particle size distributions may be produced simply and efficiently without cryogenic temperatures. The grinding or pulverizing of polymer, such as poly(alpha-olefin) suitable for reducing drag in flowing hydrocarbons may be achieved by the use of at least one liquid grinding aid and at least two grinding processors in series. The impellers of the grinders are of different openness so that granulated polymer fed to the first processor having a relatively more open impeller is ground to an intermediate size which is fed to the second processor having a relatively more closed impeller which grinds the polymer to a second, smaller size. A non-limiting example of a suitable liquid grinding aid includes a blend of propylene glycol, water and hexanol. Particulate DRA may be produced at a size of about 300 microns or less in only two passes.

Abstract: A method of preparation of a liquid electrostatographic toner or liquid ink jet ink which includes the steps of heating a marking particle mix of particles of a resin and a colourant blend in a carrier liquid to a temperature between about the first softening point of the resin and about the second softening point of the resin, maintaining the temperature of the heated marking particle mix for a selected period of time, cooling the marking particle mix to room temperature, and mixing the marking particle mix with high shear. The particle mix can be produced by coarse grinding in a ball mill. The resultant toner or ink has an improved Newtonian like flow behaviour, improved electrical properties, reduced sedimentation and agglomeration and significantly improved optical density and reduced background. The invention also includes toners and inks produced by the method.

Abstract: A combined process for the conversion of solid starting particles into solid intermediate particles and reducing the median diameter of the intermediate particles to obtain product particles. This process involves flowing a suspension of starting particles through a series of at least two conversion vessels, thereby converting at least part of the starting particles into intermediate particles, adding a supercritical fluid to one or more of the conversion vessels, thereby forming a supercritical suspension, and releasing pressure from the supercritical suspension, thereby expanding the suspension and converting the intermediate particles into product particles.

Abstract: True zero-clearance cutting on a commercial scale is provided via a cutting area including a sacrifice material that is relatively softer than the cutter. One example is a cutting system which is capable of cutting a material such as, for example, tape or paper, into a fiber or powder. The cutting system includes a cutting blade, typically a rotary cutter, and a sacrificial plate or round bar contacting the cutting blade. The contacting portion has a zero clearance during the cutting operation. A metering mechanism is also provided which is capable of metering the material at a predetermined rate to the cutting blade. A mechanism is also provided for incrementally moving the sacrificial blade towards the cutting blade to ensure that the zero clearance is maintained between the cutting blade and the sacrificial plate, even when the sacrificial plate begins to wear down due to usage.

Abstract: A closed circuit, dry processing system for processing aluminum containing products and producing reusable particles of aluminum, and a process thereof. The aluminum containing products are crushed into chips which are then separated into iron-based and ironless chips. The ironless chips are further crushed into chip fragments which are controllably supplied into a granulation chamber where the chip fragments are granulated into spheroidal particles of aluminum and other particles of organic and carbonic materials. A controlled upward airflow produced in the granulation chamber draws those of the particles exceeding a desired granulation degree out of the granulation chamber. The particles are classified as a function of their sizes and then separated as a function of their weight so that the spheroidal particles of aluminum forming the reusable particles of aluminum and residues formed by the other particles are released separately.
