Patent number: 6808581Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically applying a flying splicing tape to a roll of sheet material. The roll of sheet material is defined by a width and includes an outer-most layer. With this in mind, the method includes lifting a portion of the outer-most layer away from a remainder of the roll. The lifted portion is then cut to form a leading edge that is otherwise spaced from a remainder of the wound roll. To this end, the cut is made at a defined spacial location along the outer-most layer such that the leading edge is radially aligned with a defined application line relative to a circumference on the wound portion of the roll. In other words, when the outer-most portion is subsequently wound back onto the roll, the leading edge will be aligned with the defined application line. The splicing tape is then applied to the wound portion of the roll at the defined application line, such that the splicing tape extends across at least a portion of the width of the roll.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2001Date of Patent: October 26, 2004Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Leroy A. Patent number: 6792987Abstract: An automatic splicing apparatus for use in combination with a selected automatic labeling apparatus which uses a sensor and a splicing station through which a first web of stick-on labels passes; a second web of material from a standby roll is held in a ready position for splicing end-to-end with the first web. The first web is stopped and severed at an approximate reference line location, the second web is joined using a splice piece; wherein web feeder continues continuously with uninterrupted operation due to a loose loop located downstream of the splicer permitting splicing the first web to said second web, “on the fly”, that is without reducing the speed of the automatic labeling process during splicing.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2003Date of Patent: September 21, 2004Assignee: PakTech, Inc.Inventor: Richard Monroe

Patent number: 6790302Abstract: An adhesive strip is usable to prepare a material roll for a flying roll change. A support strip has at least one adhesive layer or stripe on its upper surface. A further adhesive zone is provided on the undersurface of the support strip. The adhesive zone includes at least two adhesive layers which are separated from each other by a backing paper. An additional separate adhesive strip is also placed on the undersurface of the support strip, spaced from the adhesive zone and without a backing paper.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2004Date of Patent: September 14, 2004Assignee: Koenig & Bauer AktiengesellschaftInventors: Peter Franz Beck, Andreas Bruno Rösch

Patent number: 6758431Abstract: Two webs of material, each rolled on a separate roll of material, are linked or spaced together during a web-roll change, without stoppage of the web travel. A linking or splicing device is used for linking, particularly by gluing the fresh web of material to the exhausting web. A cutting device is used to produce two web ends. The cutting device is located downstream of the linking or splicing device, as seen in a direction of travel of the expiring or exhausting web of material.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2003Date of Patent: July 6, 2004Assignee: Koenig & Bauer AktiengesellschaftInventor: Hartwig Horst Trutschel

Publication number: 20040118964Abstract: A roll unwinding system having a kitchen rail, a primary drive assembly, and an elevator assembly is disclosed. The unwinding system stages and positions multiple rolls, which are spliced together on the fly. A method for unwinding sequential rolls of web material that eliminates machine down time for positioning new parent rolls is disclosed. A method for unwinding and splicing the rolls is also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2002Publication date: June 24, 2004Applicant: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventor: Leslie T. Patent number: 6733608Abstract: A method for processing high bulk tissue webs is disclosed for forming a wet web, drying the web, winding the dried web to form a plurality of parent rolls, unwinding the parent rolls by transmitting torque through the roll center and/or ends, moving the partially unwound roll to effect splicing with a subsequent parent roll, and rewinding the thus united web. In particular embodiments, the torque transmitting means comprise side clamping mechanisms that engage only the end surfaces of the parent rolls. In other embodiments, an automated off-line method for splicing tissue webs from different parent rolls utilizes a finishing unit that substantially continuously impacts each web during unwinding to splice the webs together.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1998Date of Patent: May 11, 2004Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: James Leo Baggot, Michael Earl Daniels, Ronald Frederick Gropp, David Robert Gruber, Paul Kerner Pauling, James Monroe Perkins, James B. Publication number: 20040075014Abstract: The invention concerns an adhesive tape for flying reel changes having a backing layer and adhesive layers coated on both sides of said backing layer. The adhesive tape has a cleavage means provided substantially transverse to at least said backing layer, thereby dividing said backing layer into a first portion and a second portion, wherein the one adhesive layer is not effective in the area of the second portion and the other adhesive layer is not effective in the area of the first portion.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 3, 2003Publication date: April 22, 2004Inventors: Dirk Jacobs, Greet Bossaert, Walter Eevers, Yutaka Kuwabara

Publication number: 20040045658Abstract: A splicing tape (100) is provided having a base layer (10), an adhesive layer (20) on the top of the base layer (10), a first adhesive strip (30a) and a second adhesive strip (30b) on the bottom of the base layer (10), and a two lines of separating portions (50a and 50b) in the base layer (10). A splicing tape (100a) is also provided having a base layer (10a), a top adhesive (20a) on the top of the base layer (10) with detackified portions (14a and 15a), and a bottom adhesive (30c) on the bottom of the base layer (10a) with a detackified portion (23a), and first and second lines of separating portions (50a and 50b) in the base layer (10a). The line of separating portions (50a or 50b) can include perforations having a ratio of perforation length to space between perforations between a ratio of 4 to 6 and a ratio of 9 to 1.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 21, 2002Publication date: March 11, 2004Applicant: PERMACELInventors: Jason A. Patent number: 6623586Abstract: A product, apparatus and process for lamination of a sheet of polymer film onto a sheet of light weight web material. An incoming sheet of material is slit into narrow webs, which may be folded by a folding guide, and separated by use of turning bars and guides. The narrow webs then enter an embossing or laminating station. The lamination process joins the two sheets which are of different widths to allow the process to produce stock for different final products. The laminate of folded webs and polymer may be slit and/or unfolded prior to being stored on a take-up reel.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2001Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: Clopay Plastic Products Company, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Publication number: 20030168548Abstract: In the method in splicing in a continuous unwind, the surface speed of a new machine reel (R2) which is brought to the unwind and closed with a leading splice is accelerated in the initial acceleration to make the speed correspond to the speed of the old machine reel (R1) that is becoming empty, so that the fastening splice of the new machine reel can be joined to the web of the old machine reel. The loading affecting the leading splice and/or fastening splice of the new machine reel (R2) during the initial acceleration is reduced. The present invention also relates to an apparatus for implementing the method.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2003Publication date: September 11, 2003Inventors: Jorma Kinnunen, Ilkka Naatti
