  • Patent number: 4643384
Abstract: A studio easel for selective tension or compression clamping of a canvas painting stretcher frame having top and bottom cross bars in fixed upright position at a desired level has a pair of elongated channel tracks for mounting upright in laterally spaced relation on a studio wall with a pair of opposed shoes slidable in each track. Grip locks on the shoes secure them to their tracks, a stretcher frame support on one shoe of each pair engages a cross bar of the frame. A push-pull clamp on the other shoe of the pair engages the opposite cross bar of the stretcher frame. The shoes are mounted for stretch clamping the frame by positioning the frame support shoe above the push-pull clamp shoes, hanging the top cross bar of the frame on the support shoes, engaging the bottom support frame with the push-pull clamps and pulling the clamps to stretch the frame.

  • Patent number: 4642948
Abstract: An apparatus comprising only tension-bearing members serves to interconnect first and second bodies and carry both tension and compressive forces between the bodies. A first tension-bearing member, such as a cable, is connected between first and second points of a first body and connected to a first point of a second body at a location along the tension-bearing member between the connections to the first and second parts of the first body. The first tension-bearing member carries tension forces to oppose the first and second bodies from moving together. A second tension-bearing member, such as a second cable, is connected between the first and second bodies for carrying a tension force to oppose the first and second bodies from moving apart. The combination of the two tension-bearing members serves to carry both the tension and compressive forces between the two bodies.

  • Patent number: 4558522
Abstract: A removable handguide for painters or draftsman, adapted to be secured on an easel, and comprising a frame constituted by an upper crosspiece, a lower crosspiece, and two uprights, and at least one horizontal bearing bar slidably mounted on the uprights. At least the upper and lower crosspieces are each comprised by two separate half crosspieces, and a sliding member slidably mounted on the half crosspieces allows the adjustment of at least the width of the frame to the dimensions of a panel to be painted. The horizontal bearing bar has two legs each of which is provided at its free end with locking structure for locking the bearing bar along the uprights and each of which legs is secured by hinges to a sliding member slidably mounted on the uprights. The locking structure is preferably comprised by ferrules made of a material which is highly resistant to sliding, thereby preventing sliding of the bearing bar along the uprights when the bearing bar is in service position.

  • Patent number: 4109892
Abstract: An adjustable easel of generally triangular configuration mounted on a rotatable support disc or the like. The angle of inclination and/or the height of the front support for an oil painting or the like may be adjusted by either changing the length of the rear support, which pivots about its base, and/or by changing the distance between the respective base pivots of the front and rear supports. In addition, since the easel is mounted on a rotatable support, the entire easel may be turned in or to any position for best viewing and light, without motion of the painter or loss of concentration on the subject being painted. This feature in addition to the movable vertical adjustment allows the easel to be disposed at many angles or orientations as desired for best positioning relative to the object being painted and the light source.

  • Patent number: 4042203
Abstract: A folding artist's easel, particularly suited for a classroom or teaching environment, utilizes square steel tubing to form a rigid triangular base, a supporting column, and a telescopic brace, with pivotal connections therebetween. The pivotal connections are substantially free of side play and along with connection of the supporting column to a mid-point of one side of the triangular base and connection of the brace to an apex opposite this side, superior stability is provided as well as a minimum required floor space to the rear of the easel, a feature which is particularly desirable in a classroom. A workpiece, such as a drawing board or canvas stretched on a frame, is securely and gently clamped to the easel by means of individually adjustable upper and lower steel cross-members which permit adjustment in the elevation of the workpiece as well as clamping a workpiece of great height. The top of the column is adapted to receive an extension for further increasing the effective height of the easel.
