  • Patent number: 5705203
Abstract: Methods and systems for forming hinged starch-bound matrices. Starch-based compositions are molded between heated molds in order to form a cellular matrix and also to remove the water from the starch-based compositions in order to form a binding matrix of solidified starch. The molding apparatus is configured to form one or more creases within the hinge area in order to define one or more lines upon which the hinge will bend. The molding apparatus is also configured such that the region of the mold corresponding to the inner surface of the hinge area will transfer heat more slowly to the inner hinge surface, resulting in reduced thickness of the skin of the inner hinge. This increases the collapsibility, or ability of the inner surface of the hinge to fold or buckle, during the bending action. This in mm reduces the bending radius of hinge such that the hinging action exerts less strain on the outer surface of the hinge.

  • Patent number: 5362226
Abstract: It has been conventionally considered difficult to adhere a mold metal and a polyimide, etc. whose coefficients of thermal expansion differ from each other by one figure and to retain the adhesion in injection molding, etc. involving severe heating-cooling cycles over several tens of thousands of times. The greatest merit of injection molding resides in that a molded article of complicated shape can be obtained through one shot. It has been demanded to obtain a mirror-smooth injection molded article with good molding surface reproduction without extending the mold-cooling time while retaining this merit. The present invention provides a mold satisfying both of the durability and the demand. The present invention relates to a mold for synthetic resin molding comprising a mold body made of a metal having a heat conductivity of not less than 0.05 cal/cm.multidot.sec.multidot..degree.C.

Abstract: A mold release agent is provided which is compatible for use with slip casting molds formed from alumina, which are more durable than conventional gypsum molds. The preferred mold release agent is a suspension whose suspended solid matter is water-insoluble, organic, and composed of fine natural or synthetic powders or fibers. The mold release agent forms a layer of particles and/or fibers on the mold cavity surface which promotes the ease by which the cast article can be removed from the alumina mold. The mold release agent is readily burned out during subsequent firing or sintering operations, so as not to leave an undesirable residue in the surface of the fired or sintered ceramic article. Furthermore, the mold release agent does not have an undesirable effect on the microstructure of the as-cast or sintered ceramic article, nor does its use result in any detectible surface or internal cracks in the as-cast or sintered ceramic article.

  • Patent number: 5108671
Abstract: A formwork for a draft tube which includes ganged precast forms, each precast form corresponding to a curved segment of the draft tube. The precast forms are molded with continuous side plates extending thereabout and anchored in the precast concrete form and projecting beyond the surface opposite to the contact surface to provide a flange. A fastening means for attaching adjacent forms with a space therebetween to allow for stripping. A method includes determining the outline of the inner surface of the draft tube and dividing it into segments and preparing molds to make precast forms corresponding to each segment. The precast forms are assembled and shored to provide the draft tube ganged formwork, and concrete is poured about the draft tube formwork and is cured. The precast forms are stripped from the set concrete structure and reused in another draft tube formwork.

  • Patent number: 4997678
Abstract: A process is disclosed by which the finish and figure of polished preshaped structures (such as mirrors) can be replicated directly by chemical vapor deposition, with only minor polishing of the replica being required to obtain a final product, and with the original substrate being reusable for further replication. Relevant conditions under which the process can be carried out are given. Featured in the process is a pretreatment step prior to the deposition of a layer of silicon carbide to form the replica, which pretreatment step involves the formation on the polished substrate of an oxide layer and a carbon layer of high finish and uniform thickness. The carbon layer allows easy separation of the substrate and replica which otherwise would be bound together.

  • Patent number: 4957270
Abstract: A concrete column forming tube is provided for receiving poured concrete therein to produce a concrete column and which is characterized by producing surface characteristics on the concrete column including a matte finish without seam lines of the forming tube. A flexible cylindrical liner is positioned in a generally friction-fit relationship within an elongate rigid cylindrical tube constructed of partially-overlapped spirally-wound plies of paper adhered together and defining an inside wall surface having spiral seam lines thereon. The flexible liner is constructed of a paperboard layer secured at butted edges and having an inside wall surface of desired paper fiber matte texture and a thickness sufficient to bridge and cover the spiral seam lines on the inside wall surface of the rigid tube to prevent the formation of seam lines on the outside surface of the produced concrete column.

  • Patent number: 4935085
Abstract: A process for producing a urethane die. A heat-resistant epoxy adhesive is applied to the inner surface of a recess provided in the body of a die. A urethane primer is applied to the adhesive while the adhesive is still in a semi-hardened state. A punch is inserted into the recess to form a space between the recess and the punch and a urethane resin is injected into the space to form a resin layer on the recess having a shape corresponding to the outer surface of the punch. A reinforcing fibrous material may be incorporated into the resin layer by applying a urethane resin having a lubricant incorporated therein to the surface of the punch and adhering a fibrous material impregnated with the urethane resin to the coated surface of the punch prior to inserting the punch into the recess.

Abstract: A plastics shaping mold comprising a layer of hardened resin material fixedly superposed on a metal mold and defining an uneven shaping surface for forming an uneven surface pattern on plastic articles. The plastics shaping mold is prepared by a method comprising the steps of superposing a resin material in a fluid state on a master in sheet form defining an uneven surface inverse to the uneven shaping surface to be formed, allowing the resin material to harden and removing the master, thereby to form the layer of hardened resin material defining the uneven shaping surface.

  • Patent number: 4848719
Abstract: A mold for embedding histological specimens made of transparent plastic of the kind that is hardenable by irradiation, usually with light, consists of at least one flat-bottomed oval basin depressed with respect to a surrounding surface which, in turn, is externally bounded by a peripheral channel. The containing walls of the basin are outwardly inclined from the vertical. A separating layer covers the entire upper surfaces of the mold, including those of the peripheral channel, and consists of a synthetic resin, such as polyethylene, which does not bond with the resin of the embedding material and can be applied to the sheet of acrylic resin or polyvinyl chloride before the latter is pressed into the shape of the mold. The specimen embedded in the hardened embedding resin can be easily expelled from the mold even if the mold is made from another resin to which the separation layer might bond.

  • Patent number: 4755339
Abstract: An improved window gasket assembly and the apparatus and associated method for reaction injection molding such as assemblies, as well as other molded articles, are disclosed. The gasket is preferably integrally molded from an elastomeric material such as urethane onto a substantially transparent window panel. The gasket and window assembly can then be mounted and secured directly to vehicle body panel opening, for example, with adhesives, thereby eliminating the need for discrete mechanical fasteners. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, an improved aftermixer and gating apparatus includes a mixing body in which a flowable multi-constituent molding material is separated into a number of generally serpentine mixing passageways and reunited in a common mixing cavity before being conveyed through a fan-gate passageway to the mold cavity.
