  • Patent number: 4213932
Abstract: An apparatus and method of molding a biconical socket (FIG. 1) of precise concentricity and length. The biconical socket is formed by a two piece mandrel assembly (20, 21), each mandrel member having a frustoconical end (22, 23). The frustoconical ends of the mandrel members are abutted and aligned by means of a coaxially extending pin (24) in one member which engages a hole (25) in the second member. The pin is fabricated from a dissimilar material so that at the elevated molding temperature the clearance between pin and hole is substantially reduced, thereby providing precise concentricity. During molding the pressure of the mold material forces the mandrel members slightly apart against predetermined stops (32, 33) to provide a socket of precise length (L). The resulting biconical socket is particularly well-suited for use in an optical connector assembly.

  • Patent number: 4007903
Abstract: A microwave circulator is die cast as a unitary casing by the apparatus of this invention. The circulator is characterized by two-fold symmetry regarding the external dimensions of the device and three-fold symmetry regarding the internal dimensions of the device in the central coupling area. The casing defining the circulator is poured in a single operation with the use of three independently employed cores which define the three ports of the circulator.

  • Patent number: 3994650
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for casting pneumatic tires by pouring a fluidized tire-forming material into a molding cavity defined between the outer peripheral surface of a separable hard core of a mold assembly and the inner peripheral surface of an outer separable hard mold member of the mold assembly. The separable hard core is composed of at least three segments and toroidal in shape. At least one segment of the separable core guidingly is retracted in a radial direction and then moved in a direction which does not hinder retractive movement of the remaining segments and subsequently these remaining segments are retracted in the radial direction, whereby the cast tire can easily be removed from the mold assembly.

  • Patent number: 3988103
Abstract: A reusable cylindrically shaped, pivotally collapsible, foam mandrel used for the manufacture of hollow resin impregnated fiber tubes. The mandrel includes a substantially rigid foam cylindrical member, an extractable bar, and a means on the outer surface of the foam member for aiding in collapsing the cylindrical member, such as a groove. In one embodiment a hinge member is employed to further aid in the pivotal collapsibility of the foam cylindrical member.

  • Patent number: 3974997
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a casting having a curved internal passage includes die or mould means and core means including at last three parts, said parts being dimensioned and arranged to abut one another so that at least part of the joint line on the surface of the curved passage lies on a surface of revolution accessible from one end of said passage, two of said parts being capable of withdrawal along their respective axes from the ends of the passage, the third core part being of metal, and being arranged to define the inside portion of the curve of the passage, and being dimensioned so that its width is less than the diameter of the curved portion of the passage, whereby said third core part may be withdrawn from said passage.

  • Patent number: 3940227
Abstract: In an expansible core, a plurality of first plate segments are moved radially outwardly by means of a conical portion on an operating rod which is moved axially along the longitudinal axis of the core. A plurality of second plate segments are moved axially by the operating rod into the plane of the first plate segments and then expanded outwardly into the spaces between the first plate segments. First and second retraction means are also provided on the operating rod and are engageable respectively with the first and second plate segments to retract the plate segments from their expanded positions upon axial movement of the operating rod in the other direction.
