Abstract: Method for fabricating fiber and film products and composites includes: introducing an aqueous gel of nanofibrillar cellulose into a volume of organic extraction agent miscible with water so that the aqueous gel is kept as a separate phase and forms one or several discrete physical entities containing the nanofibrillar cellulose within the phase; changing water with the organic extraction agent in said one or several discrete physical entities of nanofibrillar cellulose; and drying the nanofibrillar cellulose by removing the organic extraction agent from the one or several discrete physical entities of nanofibrillar cellulose. In the method the aqueous gel of nanofibrillar cellulose is introduced into the volume of organic extraction agent in the form of one or several elongated elements which form a fiber-like or ribbon-like or film-like product after drying.

Abstract: The use of nanoparticles, including surface-modified silica and calcite nanoparticles, as processing aides for pultrusion is described. The methods include combining a resin system containing a resin and the nanoparticles with continuous fibers, pultruding this combination, and at least partially curing the resin. The methods are suitable for use with a wide variety of resins and fibers, and may be used to reduce the pull-force at a fixed fiber volume loading, increase the fiber volume loading, or both. Pultruded parts made by these methods and pultruded parts with high volume loadings of fibers are also described.

  • Patent number: 7946835
Abstract: In a feed block, a main conduit and sub conduits are formed. High-viscosity dope flows through the main conduit, and low-viscosity dope flows through the sub conduits. Distribution pins are disposed in a joint portion where the sub conduits intersect with the main conduit for controlling the flow volume of the low-viscosity dope. A tapered cutout is formed in the peripheral surface of the distribution pin. The distribution pin is attached in such an orientation that a wider side of the cutout coincides with the lower reaches of a dope flow. Since ledges are formed in both ends of the cutout, the amount of the low-viscosity dope flowing through the cutout is smaller in both widthwise ends than in the middle.

Abstract: A method of making a polymeric article is disclosed. The method includes unrolling a thermoplastic sheet material from a roll. The method also includes heating the thermoplastic sheet to a temperature sufficient to soften the thermoplastic sheet. The method further includes feeding the thermoplastic sheet, a first continuous support structure, and a second continuous support structure to at least two calendering rolls. Still further, the method includes embedding the first continuous support structure and the second continuous support structure into the thermoplastic sheet using the at least two calendering rolls to form a reinforced sheet; and over-molding the reinforced sheet to form the polymeric article.

  • Patent number: 7354543
Abstract: A press assembly is shown having a plurality of aligned press modules having a lower platen and an oppositely-disposed upper platen, the press modules defining a channel through the press assembly. A resinous wood fiber mat is fed into the channel. The upper and lower platens are driven along synchronized circular paths of travel such that the mat is compressed between the platens and is propelled by the platens through the channel. The platens are connected to eccentric shaft drive assemblies that move the platens along the desired circular path. The action of the eccentric shafts of each module are interconnected and coordinated by gear box units, and the gear box units are interconnected by intermediate gear boxes to synchronize the press assembly. A plurality of motors drives the eccentric shafts, and the supplied power may be distributed by the gear boxes.

Abstract: In the case where multiple slide hopper is used for simultaneous multilayer bead coating of photosensitive material, streak defect is occasionally cause, particularly in the case of coating photothermographic material, especially when the outermost layer includes materials capable of increasing optical density such as toner it more frequently happens. It is found that streak defect is restrained when meniscus curvature of upper side bead becomes less than 7.2 mm−1. This condition can be kept by selecting a proper value of clearance between the web surface and the lip of the slide hopper, that is from 0.10 mm to 0.40 mm, and a proper value of pressure in a lower side of the bead, that is from −100 Pa to −700 Pa.
