  • Patent number: 5104603
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a sealing apparatus. A rubber-like elastic material for forming a rubber-like elastic material sealing lip and a resin material for forming a resin sealing lip are placed within a mold for manufacturing a sealing apparatus by effecting vulcanization forming. The mold is clamped with contents placed therein, and the contents are pressurized and heated. During this process, a surface of the resin material is pressed by the forming pressure of the fluidized rubber-like elastic material against a thread formed on an inner wall surface the mold, thereby forming a thread groove on that surface of the resin material pressed against the thread.

  • Patent number: 5082612
Abstract: A method of making an oil seal (10) having two separate annular lips (62, 64) formed by splitting a single lip liner blank (12). The lip liner blank is an annular wafer having an annular groove (14) formed on one side (15) of the wafer at the point on the wafer where the wafer is intended to be split into two annular pieces (49, 50). A mold (32) is loaded with the lip liner blank (12), a prep ring of elastomeric material (43) and a seal case (b 44) and then closed thereby clamping the prep ring and wafer between upper and lower dies (40 and 36) of the mold. In the molding step the prep ring and wafer are heated and compressed causing the prep ring to become molten as it flows over the wafer. The molten elastomeric material enters the groove and pressure exerted by the elastomeric material against the groove splits the wafer into two annular pieces (49, 50). A first annular piece (49) is displaced in the mold to the desired location of the excluder lip (64).

Abstract: A lip-type oil seal for use with a rotary shaft is manufactured by a method wherein different elastomeric materials for forming respectively the sealed liquid side and the atmospheric side of a tip portion of a sealing lip of the oil seal have different moduli of elasticity or hardnesses and are placed in a superposed condition within a mold prepared for vulcanization molding the oil seal. The mold is then clamped and the materials are heated and compressed so that an elastomeric material is fluidized and is vulcanization molded together with the other material to form an integral structure while a surplus portion is allowed to remain on the atmospheric side, thereby forming a sealed liquid side surface of the sealing lip. • Patent number: 4601476
Abstract: A heat cured exhaust seal, adapted to be interposed between a pair of confronting pipes in sealing relationship therewith, is formed of wire mesh having openings between the wires thereof and a mixture of metallic fibers, non-metallic filler, a thermally stable lubricant and resin binder, which mixture surrounds the wires and substantially fills the openings in the mesh and forms the seal. The method of forming the seal includes placing a preform of wire mesh into a die cavity, forming a powder mixture of metallic fibers, non-metallic filler, a thermally stable lubricant and a resin binder, placing the powder mixture into the die cavity, pressing the wire mesh and powder mixture to the final size and shape of the seal and curing the seal at an elevated temperature.

  • Patent number: 4588465
Abstract: The barrier in a closure liner can be formed with a distinctive design or logo when the closure liner is inserted in the cap by placing a male embossing die against the sealing layer of the closure liner with sufficient force to emboss an image in the foil layer. The embossing of indicia into the liner at the time the cap is to be placed on the container provides the manufacturer with his own distinctive logo which cannot be readily duplicated thus making the container closure tamper-resistant.

  • Patent number: 4555376
Abstract: Method and apparatus for molding an elastomeric component of a shaft seal while bonding it to a fluorocarbon seal lip member. The lip member is initially shaped as a flat washer, and a radially outer portion is flexed during molding to a frustoconical shape. Positive retention of the fluorocarbon washer during molding is assured. Radially inner portion of the fluorocarbon washer rests on a planar annular mold ledge, its radially outer portion overhanging a frustoconical mold surface. A ring of uncured elastomer is located above that radially outer portion and radially inwardly from the outer periphery of the ledge. The radially inner portion has a horizontal toothed mold portion with a series of concentric sharp tooth edges. This directly engages the upper surface of the washer and clamps it firmly and immovably against the ledge. When the mold is closed, the elastomer flows and forces the outer portion of the washer down on frustoconical mold surface while bonding elastomer to washer.

  • Patent number: 4549337
Abstract: A composite dual wall cast urethane elastomer to metal thread protector that will be practical under normal as well as frigid temperature conditions of usage is formed by deep drawing a seamless metal shell wall, using a threaded die to define a mold cavity with the metal shell wall, forming and setting a synthetic elastomeric shell wall within the mold cavity in an adhering assembled relation with and along the metal shell wall with threading that is complementary with threading of the die, removing the assembly by unscrewing it with respect to the threaded die, and subjecting the assembly to heat treatment to cure the elastomeric shell wall and provide a composite protector having a cast urethane elastomer wall in a secure adhering encapsulating relation on the metal shell wall.

  • Patent number: 4517247
Abstract: A shaped article having a synthetic resinous body and a thin fluoropolymer weld layer on its surface is formed by a process which comprises heating a heat conductive metallic core member, forming a thin fluoropolymer weld layer on the surface of the core member, treating the exposed surface of the fluoropolymer layer, forming a synthetic resinous body on the outer, treated surface of the fluoropolymer layer and removing the core member, such as by dissolving. In the shaped article thus produced, a thin fluoropolymer weld layer is formed on the surface of the synthetic resinous body, and the thickness of the fluoropolymer coating can be reduced. This permits the production of shaped articles at low cost and having high mechanical strength, even for complicated shapes. According to the invention, it is possible to produce articles having complex shapes such as corrosion resistant vessels, molds having good release characteristics, and so forth, at a comparatively low cost.
