  • Patent number: 5067890
Abstract: An in-mold label supply system (20) for a plastic blow molding machine (22) has particular utility for use with rotary wheel type blow molding and includes a hopper assembly (68) including a feed hopper (70) for positioning discrete sheet-like labels (72) in a vertical feed stack (74). A feeder (76) of the system includes a feed member (78) that selectively grips the lowermost label (72) of the feed stack (74) to provide delivery thereof to a conveyor (80) for conveyance to the blow molding machine (22) where a label dispenser (82) transfers the label (72) to a mold (24) of the machine for placement within a mold cavity section (28). A gate (104) of the feeder (76) cooperates with the feed member (78) to permit only the lowermost label (72) to be fed from the feed stack (74) to the conveyor (80). The feed member (78) is preferably embodied by a feed roller (114) to which pressurized gas and a vacuum are alternately fed to control the label feeding.

  • Patent number: 5044922
Abstract: Apparatus for applying labels in the molds of a plastic blow molding machine of the type wherein a plurality of sets of molds are mounted on a wheel rotatable about a horizontal axis. Mold sections are moved toward and away from one another to enclose a parison, and the parison is then blown to the confines of the cavity between the mold sections. The apparatus removes labels successively from one or more magazines, and deposits labels on an endless conveyor that transports the labels to a position adjacent an open mold. The apparatus laterally transfers the labels successively from the conveyor to a position within the mold section, such that when a mold closes about a plastic parison and the parison is blown, the labels become adhered to the blown plastic article.

  • Patent number: 5039298
Abstract: A rotating shaft for intermittent rotation through predetermined angles is located in parallel to a rotation shaft of a rotor holding a plurality of split mold units, and rubber cups for adhering labels are secured to the front ends of links which are swingable about pins secured to the rotating shaft. The label is positioned upon the inner walls of the split mold halves when the same are in their open state by the combination of the intermittent rotation of the rotating shaft and the swinging movement of the links. The split mold holds the label by vacuum suction and the label is fused to a product when a highly heated plastic material is applied under pressure to the inner wall of the mold. A split mold holder is constructed so that when a slider-crank mechanism in association with a cam follower is positioned to a dead position, the clamping force is applied.

Abstract: An improved vacuum forming process for forming a deep drawn plastic article with a flange in an area of high forming stresses wherein a mold mounted on a base forms the shape of the article. A sheet of hot plastic material is placed over the mold and a vacuum is drawn to form the plastic sheet into the shape of the mold to form the article. The improvement is forming a character in the mold portion that forms the flange in the area of the high forming stress, said character having dimensions such that properly heated plastic sheet material will be imprinted with a predetermined clarity during the molding operation. A heated sheet of plastic material is placed over the mold and a vacuum is drawn to draw the plastic material around the mold including the mold portion that forms the flange in an area of high forming stresses. The plastic material is then solidified and removed from the mold. The flange is visually inspected to determine if the imprinted character has the predetermined clarity.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for delivering labels to the blow molds and removing blown containers with the labels thereon from a blow molding apparatus wherein the apparatus precludes access to the upper or lower ends of the molds. A carriage is reciprocated horizontally between a position externally of the blow molds and a position within the blow molds. The carriage supports pick-up heads that pick up labels from magazines, deliver them between the mold halves and deposit them on the mold halves. The carriage also supports container removal devices that engage the blown containers with the labels thereon and remove them from a position between the mold halves.

Abstract: An in-mold label dispenser (22) for a blow molding machine is disclosed as including a dispensing head (56) mounted for rectilinear movement along a first axis A between a label magazine (48) and an open mold (28) and having a label carrier (58) mounted on the dispensing head for rectilinear movement between retracted and extended positions along a second axis B transverse to the first axis A. Rectilinear movement of the dispensing head (56) along the first axis A and coordinated extending and retracting rectilinear movement of the label carrier (58) along axis B transfers a label (50) from the magazine (48) to the mold (28) in preparation for the blow molding operation. The label dispenser (22) has particular utility when provided with a pair of the label carriers (58) to simultaneously transfer a pair of labels (50) to the open mold (28) within the confined space limitations involved.

Abstract: An in-mold label dispenser (10,10') for supplying labels to a plastic blow molding machine (12) is disclosed as having a dispensing head (36) on which a first locator (40) is mounted so as to be moveable from a withdrawn position at one side of the mold to an inserted position between open mold sections (16) and into engagement with a second locator (42) mounted at the other side of the mold. The engagement of the first and second locators from opposite sides of the mold provides accurate location of the dispensing head (36) during movement from a mold aligned position to a label transfer position to provide transferring of the labels (34) to the mold from one or more label magazines (30). First and second supports (48, 50) on which the locators are mounted are moved by first and second actuators (52,54) to provide the movement between the mold aligned and label transfer positions.

  • Patent number: 4639341
Abstract: A strip-like pattern sheet has a plurality of patterns and register marks spaced apart from each other by a predetermined distance in its longitudinal direction. The pattern sheet is transported from a supply roll to a take-up roll in such a way that it covers the opening of a female mold. At the upper stream of the female mold, the register marks are detected so that a pattern-sheet-holding-and-transferring means holds the pattern sheet at a predetermined position and heats it. The pattern sheet is displaced by one pitch so as to cover the opening of the female mold. The softened pattern sheet is pressed by a compressed air against the cavity surface of the female mold with the cavity being evacuated. Thereafter the holding-and-transferring means is returned to its initial position and the female and male molds are mated so that molten resin is injected into the molding cavity defined between the female and male molds so that a pattern is imprinted on the surface of a molded article or finished product.
