Patent number: 8555849Abstract: A piston for an internal combustion engine includes a piston crown (2) and a cylindrical side wall (4), an annular piston ring groove (8) being formed in the side wall (4) which accommodates an annular spring (14). The spring (14) includes an annular radially extending portion (16) and first (20) and second (22) projections. The radially extending portion (16) divides the annular groove into two chambers in the axial direction of the piston. The upper chamber closest to the piston crown accommodates an annular compression ring (10). The lower chamber furthest from the piston crown accommodates an annular oil scraper ring (12). The first projection (20) is arranged to contact the upper surface closest to the piston crown of the annular groove (8). The second projection (22) is arranged to contact the inner surface of the oil scraper ring (12) to urge it outwardly.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2008Date of Patent: October 15, 2013Assignee: Ricardo UK LimitedInventor: David Lee

Patent number: 7252292Abstract: An oil ring for an internal combustion engine, comprising a metallic annular body (10) to be mounted around a piston (P) reciprocating inside a cylinder (C) of the engine, said annular body (10) having opposite lateral faces (11), an internal face (12) onto which will be seated a resilient expander (M), and an external contact face (13) to be seated against the internal face of the cylinder (C) and having a height (h) that is substantially smaller than the height (H) of the internal face (12). Each lateral face (11) is defined by one or more lateral face portions (11a, 11b), which are designed to reduce the moment of inertia of the annular body (10), giving higher conformability to the latter. Preferentially, but not exclusively, the annular body (10) can be further provided with channels (15, 16), extended along at least part of the ring hight and which are radially spaced back in relation to the external contact face (13).Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2002Date of Patent: August 7, 2007Assignee: Mahle Components de Motores do Brasil LTDAInventors: Renato Panelli, André Ferrarese

Patent number: 7083170Abstract: A rod or piston primary seal, which includes a primary seal (2) facing the space (1) to be sealed and a secondary seal (3) facing away from it, in which the primary seal (2) is fitted into the groove (4), of a holding element (5), open in the direction of the relatively movable machine part (11) which is bounded, on the side facing away from the space (1) to be sealed, by a first side surface (7) which extends essentially at right angles to the sealing axis (6), and includes a sealing edge ring (8) made of tough, hard plastic which has a sealing edge (9) lying adjacent to the machine part (11) and is pressed with its sealing edge (9) onto the machine part (11) by a profile ring (10) made of elastomeric material which is supported on the bottom surface (12) of groove (4) and lies adjacent to sealing edge ring (8) with its inner surface (13), the sealing edge ring (8) having a profile bounded essentially by a right angle between the sealing edge (9) and the bounding surface (14) facing the first side surface (7Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2002Date of Patent: August 1, 2006Assignee: Carl Freudenberg KGInventors: Dieter Von Borstel, Günter Reichow, Hans-Jürgen Timmermann

Patent number: 6685193Abstract: A non-sealing, lubricating piston ring for lubricating the cylinder wall of a piston housing in a combustion tool is disclosed. The lubricating piston ring is made from a lubricating material such as polytetrofluroethylene (PTFE). The shape of the PTFE ring is designed to optimize the lubricity of the piston housing, while allowing enough friction for the piston to operate properly within the piston housing during reciprocating cycling movement. The PTFE ring may have radial fins extending from an outer surface thereof that are angled to promote ring rotations, such that the ring moves easily along and efficiently lubricates the inner cylinder wall of the piston housing. The PTFE ring does not form a seal between the piston and the housing. Instead, the PTFE ring is positioned above or below a sealing ring, such as a steel piston ring which forms the seal between the piston and the piston housing.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2001Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: William Roberts, Chris H.
