Peripheral Radially Sealing Flexible Projection (e.g., Lip Seal, Etc.) Patents (Class 277/549)
  • Publication number: 20120319358
Abstract: A radial shaft seal configured for receipt in a housing and about a shaft to sealingly isolate an air side of the seal from an oil side of the shaft seal is provided. The seal includes a mounting portion and a seal lip having an annular sealing surface extending between an oil side end and a free air side end. An annular bridge is connected to the oil side end of the seal lip by a first hinge and to the mounting portion by a second hinge. The bridge extends from the first hinge to the second hinge in radially overlying relation to the seal lip. An annular projection extends from the mounting portion axially away from the bridge. The projection has an oil side facing the seal lip and confronts the air side end of the seal lip upon the seal lip pivoting about the first hinge.

Abstract: A seal arrangement, in particular a cartridge seal, which has a carrier ring that is fastenable to a first bearing ring and a cover ring that is movable in relation to the carrier ring and fastenable to a second bearing ring. The carrier ring carries an elastic part which forms at least one sealing lip that makes sliding sealing contact with the cover ring. The elastic part forms an overhang arranged axially on a radially running portion of the carrier ring, and the overhang radially covers a radial end piece of the cover ring at least partially. The overhang consequently assumes the sealing function of the carrier ring so that the carrier ring can form a sealing gap with the cover ring. The elastic part has to be attached on only one axial side of the carrier ring and thus the fastening region of the carrier ring can be made smaller.

Abstract: A shaft seal assembly for establishing a liquid-tight seal between a steering knuckle and an axle shaft is provided. The shaft seal assembly includes an outer case and a first elastomeric member attached to one another. The elastomeric member has a castellated feature including a plurality of projections extending in a radially outward direction and separated from one another by a plurality of grooves. When the shaft seal assembly is installed in the steering knuckle, a cavity is presented between the steering knuckle and the first elastomeric member. Together, the grooves and cavity allow air to flow from a hub on one side of the seal assembly to a vacuum port in the steering knuckle. The cavity extends circumferentially around the seal assembly, and thus, air flow from the hub to the vacuum port is not dependent upon the orientation of the seal assembly relative to the steering knuckle.

  • Patent number: 8074999
Abstract: A dynamic sealing arrangement for preventing leakage of a fluid along a shaft includes multiple seals and pressurized barrier sealant is presented. According to one aspect, at least three seals are arranged along the shaft with pressurized barrier sealant between the first and second seals and a collection area is provided between the second and third seals to collect any leakage that might occur. Collected leakage, if any, is ported to an output port. According to another aspect, a unitary seal block member is provided that supports the dynamic sealing arrangement for the shaft and defines a piston chamber and a drilled passageway connecting the piston chamber and barrier sealant pressurization chamber between two seals. A substantial amount of plumbing is self contained in a single body minimizing the need for additional components or complexity.

Abstract: A scroll compressor including a non-orbiting and an orbiting scroll member having mating involute wraps extending therefrom. In one exemplary embodiment, at least one of the non-orbiting and orbiting scroll members includes an inner wall forming a groove in an end of the involute wrap and extending substantially entirely along the length thereof. Positioned within the groove is a tip seal having outwardly extending projections configured to engage the inner walls of the involute wrap along at least a portion thereof. In one exemplary embodiment, the tip seal has a length that is less than the length of the groove. As a result, a gap is formed at the innermost portion of the involute wrap between the end of the groove and the end of the tip seal.

Abstract: A shaft seal assembly includes a metal case having a wall extending cylindrically about a central axis with an annular leg extending radially inwardly from the wall toward the central axis. An elastomeric material is bonded to the leg, and a PTFE seal element is attached to the elastomeric material at a bond joint. The bond joint is spaced radially inwardly from the leg and in radial alignment with the leg and inhibits the elastomeric material from flexing. As such, the elastomeric material is isolated or substantially isolated from impacting the performance of the PTFE seal element during use. Accordingly, the bond joint provides a reliable seal of the PTFE seal element against a running surface of a shaft or wear sleeve.

Abstract: In a seal system for a scroll type fluid machine, a seal mechanism is provided between a backpressure plate and a holder, so as to surround an orbiting backpressure chamber. The seal member comprises a seal attachment groove, a seal member and a Y-shaped packing. The seal attachment groove is stepped on its outer circumference to define a shallow bottom portion. The seal member includes, on its outer circumference side, a cutout portion matching the shallow bottom portion. The Y-shaped packing is disposed between a deep groove peripheral wall of the seal attachment groove and the cutout portion of the seal member, and a backpressure chamber is defined on a reverse surface side of the seal member. By this arrangement, a slide surface of the seal member can be larger than an effective area of the backpressure side of the seal member. Thereby it is possible to reduce a difference between a load Ff acting on the slide surface and a load Fb acting on the reverse surface.
