Hydraulic fluid under pressure may enter an annular fluid chamber through its opening an exert a generally radial force as a result of a pressure differential. This radial force can act to increase the sealing effectiveness of the probe seal both to the body of the coupling member retaining the probe seal and to the probe of a male coupling member inserted in the receiving chamber of the female member.

    Abstract: A gasket for a railroad car manway nozzle and cover includes an inner leg portion and an outer leg portion joined by a generally planar annular body portion defining an upper annular cover sealing surface and a lower annular nozzle body sealing surface. Concentric annular chevrons are formed on the upper and lower annular sealing surfaces. In one form, the chevrons have a uniform height relative to the upper and lower sealing surfaces. In a modified form, the height of the chevrons varies relative to the surfaces from which they extend. The height of the chevrons is a minimum where the gasket is radially aligned with cover clamping bolts and a maximum at radial locations midway between clamping bolts. A tab depending from the outer leg portion provides visual verification of the presence of the gasket.

    Abstract: A fluid container assembly design has a wide tolerance variation in the width of an open seal gap between opposed sealing surfaces of different assemblies. A resilient seal is provided with a generally rectangular central section partially supported within a groove and partially unsupported by excessive extension beyond the groove. To avoid buckling, the extending portion includes resilient stabilizers including barb-like projections. These resiliently engage a component surface adjacent the groove to stabilize the extending portion and prevent buckling. This allows the seal to compress over its total height to seal the gap between the bottom of the retaining groove in one component and the opposite sealing surface of the other assembly component while the stabilizer projections yield to avoid involvement in the sealing function and act only to prevent buckling of the seal unsupported portion. Exemplary applications for engine rocker covers and oil pan-crankshaft seal gaps are disclosed.
