    Abstract: A case or cover for a hard bound book is formed by bonding the formed by bonding the cover boards to the book cover stock using a hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprising:(a) 20 to 35% by weight of an A-B-A block or A-B-A-B-A-B multi-block copolymer where the A component is styrene and the B component is butadiene or hydrogenated butadiene and the copolymer contains at least 28 parts styrene per 100 parts copolymer;(b) 45 to 70% by weight of a compatible tackifying resin;(c) 5 to 30% by weight of a plasticizing oil;(d) 0 to 5% by weight of a petroleum derived wax; and(e) 0.1 to 2% by weight of a stabilizer.

    Abstract: A report cover (10) is disclosed for securing and protecting a report (12). The report cover (10) includes a front panel (14) and a rear panel (16). Three parallel hinges (22,24,26) are formed in the front panel (14). A single hinge (36) is formed in the rear panel (16). The report is secured between the front and rear panels near the first edges (20,34) of the panels as by staples. The front panel (14) is then folded about the hinges to lie parallel to and adjacent the rear panel. The front and rear panels are secured along a line distant from the first hinge (36) by an adhesive strip (38). The first hinges (22,36) of each panel permits certain portions (58,60,62) of the panels and report to pivot about the hinges to eliminate any force tending to open or close the report. A cover (18) can be provided. In the alternative, a front cover (70) can be employed with the front panel (14) forming a rear cover.

    Abstract: A ring binder cover is composed of a pair of thermoplastic sheets superimposed in edge-to-edge relation with stiffener insert panels disposed therebetween. The inner edges of the insert panels are spaced apart a distance which is approximately the width of the back panel and hinged portions of the binder. The peripheral edge portions of the two thermoplastic sheets are sealed together and provide a sealed envelope for the stiffener inserts which are disposed therebetween and define semi-rigid back and front cover panels of the binder. A discrete, semi-rigid spine is affixed to the outer surface of the cover in the area between the inner edges of the inserts. The spine has a width less than the distance between the inserts and together define hinges for the binder covers. The spine is composed of a stiffening insert panel encased within a thermoplastic sheath material and a ring mechanism is affixed on the inner surface of the cover opposite the spine.

    Abstract: In the higher priced grade of books, which for example are known generally as the "hard copies" as distinguished from the more economically priced so-called "paper backs", it is customary to protect the books by a so-called dust shield or protective book cover. These protective covers are generally highly colored and carry a pictorial image of the author, or of some primary incident in the story. When it is necessary to put down the book without finishing reading it in one sitting, it is desirable to have a book marker so that one's place can be quickly and easily found so that the story can be continued without regression. Frequently a portion of a page of newspaper or magazine is torn off to provide a small book marker. By the present invention a narrow perforated edge of the fold under flap of the book cover may be torn off from the dust shield or cover and used as a book marker to mark one's place in the book.

The spacer is adjustable between different spacing positions with an adjustable attachment. The sample book comprises a cover member which includes first and second substantially planar cover sections hingedly joined to a substantially planar spine section, a plurality of individual sample sheets arranged in a stack, and a pair of tear-resistant holding strips disposed along one edge and on opposite sides of the stack of sample sheets. The stack of sample sheets are bound together between the holding strips by means of staples or the like to form an edge portion defined by the edges of the sample sheets between the holding strips. The edge portion is adhesively secured to the spine section of the cover member to form the sample book. In this manner, a sturdy sample book is provided in which the first and second cover sections may each be hingedly opened to lie in substantially the same plane as the planar spine section to facilitate easy and substantially full viewing of the sample sheets.

    Abstract: A book cover making process feeds transparent polymer sheet material from a roll of material across a plurality of roller cutting blades for making cuts a portion of the way through the material. The polymer sheet material being fed is coated with adhesive in two space coats on either side of the cut lines on the opposite side of the sheet from the cut lines. The coated adhesive is covered with backing material and the polymer sheet material is then cut into predetermined sizes to form book covers. The coating and backing may be done in one operation and rewound onto a roll and fed from the rewound roll for cutting to size and then have a plurality of lines cut into the individual polymer sheets.

The bridge means of hot melt adhesive extend across the score lines and thus provide continuity of adhesive on opposite sides of and across the score lines.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for permanently binding sheets of paper into a cover inexpensively and quickly is disclosed. The cover has a top and bottom leaf with a center fold therebetween and a folding score on each leaf near the center fold. An elongated strip of heat reactivatible adhesive is applied to the inner surface of one or both of the leaves between the folding score on the leaf and the center fold. A plurality of sheets are positioned adjacent the strip or strips of adhesive and the entire assembly is then fed into a laminator machine which heats and presses the heat reactivatible adhesive to cause it to flow back towards the sheets. As the adhesive cools the ends of the sheets are held in intimate contact between the leaves near the center fold.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing articles of softened polyvinyl choride reinforced with a reinforcement material. The method includes the steps of coating one surface of each of two perforated polyvinyl chloride foils with a terpolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and an unsaturated carboxylic acid bringing the coated surface of each of the foils into contact with an opposite surface of said reinforcement material, sealing the portions of the foils situated along the edges of the reinforcement material in a high frequency field to form sealed seams and pressing the foils and interposed reinforcing material at an elevated temperature and pressure to secure the foils to the reinforcement material.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for permanently binding sheets of paper into a cover inexpensively and quickly is disclosed. The cover has a top and bottom leaf with a center fold therebetween and a folding score on each leaf near the center fold. An elongated strip of heat reactivatible adhesive is applied to the inner surface of one or both of the leaves between the folding score on the leaf and the center fold. A plurality of sheets are positioned adjacent the strip or strips of adhesive and the entire assembly is then fed into a laminator machine which heats and presses the heat reactivatible adhesive to cause it to flow back towards the sheets. As the adhesive cools the ends of the sheets are held in intimate contact between the leaves near the center fold.

    Abstract: The invention relates to loose leaf binders for holding periodicals and the object of the invention is to provide a loose leaf binder having a curved back and no rivets visible from the back.For this purpose, the paper-retaining means are fitted to an inner flat spine which is connected to the covers by means of welds extending along the hinge lines between the covers and the outer spine. The covers consist of boards enclosed in flexible polyvinyl chloride sheeting and the outer spine is reinforced with a semi-rigid polyvinyl chloride strip. The inner spine consists of a strip of board enclosed in flexible polyvinyl chloride sheeting, the width of the sheeting being greater than the width of the board strip so that flexible hinges are produced on each side of the strip. When the inner spine is assembled with the covers and outer spine, the welds are produced along the hinge lines so that there is no tendency to tear out the inner spine when the covers are opened and closed.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a device for protecting the edges of a book. An elongated, flexible material has a zipper located along the center of the elongated axis. The zipper, which may be of the plastic pressure lock type, connects two elongated halves forming the flexible material. On the outer edges of the flexible material is an adhesive bonding surface protected by an adhesive covering strip. In use, the adhesive covering strip is removed. The flexible material is then attached to the outer edges of the book by the adhesive bonding surface. To open the book, the zipper is unzipped, thereby allowing the book to be opened. To provide smooth corners on the book, notches are cut in the flexible material.

    Abstract: An improved process of attaching a book body to a case at the hinge to form a hard bound book. A liquid thermoplastic bonding agent is applied to the body or case at the hinge area. The bonding agent is allowed to dry and form a solidified layer. The body is then inserted into the case so that the portion to which the agent has been applied is located at the hinge of the completed book. The dried bonding agent is heatable upon exposure to an alternating electric field and melts to form the attachment at the hinge area. Pressure applied to the hinge area assists in forming the attachment and reduces the thickness and heat generation of the layer.
