Abstract: A fitting incorporating a bushing for forming a seal between a length of corrugated tubing and the fitting, and methods of actuating the fitting and forming a seal using the fitting and tubing are provided. The tubing can be corrugated stainless steel tubing having a jacket that at least partially covers the tubing. The fitting includes a bushing having a substantially open configuration, the bushing configured to engage at least one corrugation groove. When a nut is advanced, the bushing applies pressure to the tubing to crush at least one initial corrugation to form a metal-to-metal seal that is gas and liquid tight.

One form of the invention of such a method is disclosed using a harder male fitting and a hard tube end and introducing a replaceable insert made out of a softer material of lower yield strength which will deform at both ends and seal the two mating harder components. Abstract: To couple a giving end of a first pipe and an receiving end of a second pipe, the device contains a rubber ring, a tubular screw, a C-shaped ring, and a rubber washer. The C-shaped ring is embedded in a groove of the giving end of the first pipe which is threaded through the rubber ring, the tubular screw and the rubber washer and is plugged into the receiving end of second pipe. Inside the tubular screw, the diameter is gradually shrunk to form a born-shaped space with a slant wall. When the tubular screw is screwed into the receiving end of the second pipe, the slant wall forces the C-shaped ring, and thereby the giving end of the first pipe, to gradually advance. In the mean time, the bottom of the tubular screw presses the rubber washer tightly against the second pipe to effectively prevent leakage.

An annular seal is located in the coupling body adjacent the annular step, the seal having an inner annular portion with which the tube end is engageable and an outer annular portion, and a sleeve between the locking device and seal to compress the outer annular portion of the seal axially.

  • Patent number: 6877781
Abstract: A fitting for an end of a length of corrugated tubing has a split retainer that grips the tubing corrugations, and is engaged between a fitting body and a nut. Upon tightening the nut on the fitting body, the endmost corrugation is compressed between the retainer and a sealing seat on the fitting body arranged to provide a narrow metal-metal sealing junction and also a gasket seal. The fitting body has an inwardly tapered conical surface with a circular outer radius surrounded by an annular groove, thus forming a sealing edge, and the annular groove carries a gasket. The conical surface is dimensioned so that the sealing edge falls between the maximum and minimum diameters of the endmost corrugation. As the fitting is tightened, the endmost corrugation is collapsed between the sealing edge and the retainer, providing a metal/metal clamped sealing junction. The outer diameter part of the endmost corrugation is wrapped into a bead or torus that compresses the gasket, forming a metal/gasket additional seal.

Abstract: A fitting for the connection of a tubing end. The fitting includes a body having a bore with an internally-threaded opening which extends to a seating surface, and a front ferrule which is receivable coaxially over the tubing end. An externally-threaded nut is receivable coaxially over the outer diameter of the tubing end to be positionable thereon rearwardly of the front ferrule such that, with the tubing end and front ferrule being inserted through the bore opening, the nut is threadably engageable with the body urging an outer surface of the ferrule into a canning engagement against the body seating surface. The axial length of the seating surface is provided to extend substantially the entire length of the ferrule outer surface so as to constrain the radial outward expansion of the ferrule rearward end.

Abstract: An intrinsic gauging device for a ferrule type tube fitting of the type having a coupling nut, a coupling body and at least one ferrule, includes a precisely formed marking that has a predetermined relationship with the coupling nut when the fitting has been initially pulled-up. The marking may be realized as a precision groove or recess machined into a surface. The groove can be made more easily visually perceptible such as by roughening, knurling or coloring the surface. The groove defines an edge at a precise position that corresponds to a predetermined axial displacement of the nut relative to the body for initial pull-up. The marking may also be formed with a precise dimension such as an axial length to provide a second edge that corresponds to a predetermined axial displacement of the nut relative to the body beyond initial pull-up for fitting assemblies that are remade.

Abstract: The present invention is a pre-assembled fitting or coupling having a body, a sleeve, and a nut. One end of the nut has a through bore that is tapered and decreases in diameter toward the end of the nut. The outer surface of the sleeve is tapered as well which facilitates the radial movement of the sleeve segments upon tightening locking the sleeve segments into the proper position on the corrugated tubing. The body contains an inner seal surface with improved geometry that effectively concentrates the sealing load over a pre-determined surface and prevents overloading of the seal surface area. The sleeve of the present invention is divided into four separate segments. The inner surface of the sleeve contains an annular spring. The spring on the inner surface facilitates the removal of the corrugated tube from the nut and coupling body by forcing the segments outward upon loosening the nut.
