  • Patent number: 6772495
Abstract: An apparatus and method for rapidly and safely installing a door panel over an automobile door frame includes a rectangular solid body that is preferably formed of a polyethylene plastic. The body includes a nose portion that has a recessed area. The recessed area has a tapered plane that is used to progressively urge the panel around a lip of the frame when the body is impacted, such as by an air impact hammer. The body has an opposite end distally disposed from the nose that includes a cylindrical recess which is adapted to receive a shaft therein, the shaft being adapted for use with the air impact hammer. A fin extends from the nose portion at an angle with respect to the shaft and is used to prevent the tool from rolling into the panel during installation. In use a first pass around the perimeter of the panel is made with the tool close to normal to initially set the panel in position around the lip. A second pass is then made at more of an angle to complete the crimp of the panel fully around the lip.

Abstract: The present invention concerns a method that is timesaving, more economical and facilitates the handling and processing of short solid wood planks. Tongue-and-groove joints are machined on the short sides of the short green planks enabling their releasable tight assembly in rows for the seasoning process in the kiln dryer. This temporary attachment between adjacent planks prevents exposition of the short sides to the drying air thus avoiding the usual end grain checking on the latter during kiln drying, and eliminates the need of performing any subsequent machining and trimming steps after the expensive kiln drying step. This process then also improves the saving opportunities by increasing the volume of wood drying capacity and by increasing the production of reusable green wood shavings as opposed to unusable wood shavings following the kiln drying operation.

  • Patent number: 6286193
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for mechanically joining metal sheets which lie flat one upon the other, having a tool set comprising at least one punch and one die which bounds a cavity in which the joining operation takes place, the punch displacing sheet-metal material out of a sheet-metal plane and upsetting it, and at least one tool part being arranged, for this purpose, on a displaceable tool carrier which has a holding-down means supported in a spring-prestressed manner adjacent to the tool part. In order that the holding-down means allows high outputs, it is provided that, for the spring prestressing of the holding-down means, the tool carrier has a cylinder cavity in which there is guided a piston which acts on the holding-down means and on the head side bounds, with volume-changing action, a pressure chamber which can be subjected to the action of a fluid pressure medium.

Abstract: By means of the fastener fixing tool fitted with a fastener-guide (30), the base plate and the end (23) of the fastener-guide (30) are firmly fixed together, by a relative movement of the base plate and the end (23) of the fastener-guide (30), the one in relation to the other, in a plane perpendicular to the axis (21) of the fastener-guide (30), the base plate is pressed against a receiver-support (100) and attached there by means of a fastener. Where the base plate constitutes a female part for firmly uniting with the end (23) of the fastener-guide (30), the fastener-guide (30) is provided with an exterior annular groove (24) to receive a snap fit clamp (11) of the base plate.

  • Patent number: 6256853
Abstract: A forming die includes a base and at least two die segments. At least a first one of the die segments is moveably mounted to the base for shifting between closed and opened positions. The die segments together define a cavity having an opening when the first die segment is in the closed position. A punch is moveably mounted to the base for shifting between a retracted position and an extended position wherein the punch crimps a part positioned within the cavity. A powered actuator is connected to at least the first one of the die segments, and shifts the first die segment between the closed and opened positions such that a part positioned within the cavity can be removed after crimping by shifting of the first die segment to the open position. The forming die is particularly well-suited for crimping electrochemical cells.

  • Patent number: 6253432
Abstract: A method and apparatus for setting small gem stones in malleable material including precious metals such as gold sheets, so as to form lockets, pendants and other jewelry. Sheet material thinner than used in a completely hand-set operation is pressed to form a recess for the gem, and projections around the recess. The stone is deposited in the recess and the assembly is pressed in a jig, causing the projections to become deformed and form claws over the gem stone edge, setting it in the sheet.

  • Patent number: 6226854
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved die member, panel and fastener assembly and method for installing a fastener into a panel. The die member has a pair of opposed clinching lips protruding from an end face. The opposed clinching lips have a contact face that narrows as it approaches the opposed ends of the contact face and sidewalls that are angled with respect to vertical. The lips, due to the dual angles, substantially and simultaneously drive panel metal into fastener grooves both longitudinally and laterally. The fastener and panel assembly have panel metal deformed into the fastener grooves resulting in generally wedge-shaped portions of panel metal in the opposed ends of the fastener grooves.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for compliant positioning of an object during an assembly operation wherein the apparatus includes a base plate, a locator plate for mounting an object such as a clamp or a tool spaced from the base plate and a plurality of linear actuators connected between the base plate the locator plate by universal joints providing six degrees of freedom of movement. According to the apparatus and the method a control is connected to the actuators for selectively moving the locator plate to a predetermined position relative to the base plate for contacting a component to be assembled with an object mounted on the locator plate. Two or more of the actuators can be mechanically coupled to move the locator plate with less than six degrees of freedom. The control is responsive to a force applied to the locator plate through the object during assembly of the component for actuating the linear actuators to change the applied force.
